Let it be known that you also see Sten's companions in the fade, none have horns.

As someone mentioned earlier, Sten and his squad were being sent into Human lands to learn about the Blight; it makes sense that the ones chosen would be ones that could blend in a little with the native population, and not stir up trouble.

The new design looks good. The change makes more sense lore-wise. It explains why ogres have horns and Sten's use of the word "human". It always confused me, the original design of the Qunari were just slightly taller then the average human, otherwise they looked pretty similar. Its a fantasy world, its better to have more distinct features between the races. It's too bad they didn't introduce this concept in DAO, people would have less of a problem with it then.

I have to agree with Brockololly here - I liked the fact that Sten didn't look radically different from humans, but that it was his worldview and culture that was really alien. I thought qunari looked about as different from humans as elves and dwarves.

However, I also agree with you that lore-wise, it does make sense. But, I think that it would be best to reserve these really strange looking (they look great, just very different) qunari to positions like Ben-Hassran on account of their belief in the Qun. I think that the horned qunari should be rare - you only see them if you're really deep in qunari territory or something.

No...they really do have horns?
Uh...I'm not sure what I think about that yet. Though I agree they needed some differentiating. Sten just looked like a kind-of-tall guy, and not a different race.

Yeah I don't find the argument very convincing either. But I am willing to believe they intended to include horned Qunari but decided to bin the idea and use a generic model for all those mercs you keep fighting throughout Fereldan. Might just be a case of developers running low on time and not fixing something they had intended to.

I mean, if the horned Qunari we see here is just a variation of the bronze skinned, hornless Sten/Origins Qunari, that would be ok, I guess. But if we're supposed to think that all Qunari have spiky horns, white and red Kratos paint and look all Daedric- that I have problems with.

The thing I liked about the Qunari as portrayed inOrigins was that in reading the accounts of them from the Codex from the likes of Brother Genitivi, it made them seem like huge hulking giants, just really alien looking. And then when you meet Sten, sure he is a big guy, but its not so much his visual appearance that sets him apart but rather his world view which makes him so alien. I liked that dichotomy. Now it seems they're "amping up" the alien appearanceof the Qunari  to match with the alien philosophy of the Qun.

Great post, I defintily agree.  Having a lot of the other races just slightly different, but having the people of Thedas see it as a MASSIVE difference was a nice dichtomy.  It was a nice real world parallel too.

Horned qunari are special? Hmpf. Fine in theory, but I won't be surprised if every qunari in DA2 is "special" then.

Again, the article clearly states that it's the naturally hornless Qunari who are special, not the horned ones.

Ah, okay, you're right. considering there were a lot of hornless qunari running around in Origins, it's an easy mistake to make, though.

So... adding that mysterious stump-and-scar-less horn-cutting by those who leave qunari society (i.e. mercenaries among others) to it, they really managed to cover everything.

Basically the argument still stands, though. Wanna bet that mysteriously none of the DA2 qunari mercenaries felt the need to cut off their horns?

If they are Tal-Vashoth, perhaps its a part of their ideology to cut off their horns to seperate themselves from the crowd. If they are outcasts and mercenaries, perhaps some special exile ceremony removed them.

Yeah, there could be a special tool for it. These guys have gunpowder, it wouldn't be such a stretch for them to have invented something to completely remove the horns.

Am I the only one who thinks they look sorta like ogres?
But it would make sense if ogres come from qunari broodmothers, which I read somewhere.

I agree, the DA universe is still being invented as we go along I suppose. But this change really seems like it stems from asthetics and not from a pure lore perspective. Ah whatever, I like the new look anyways. Shocked, but time to move on.

So . . . Sten was a weird looking Qunari and most other Qunari look like the fellow in the pictures on the first page?

I approve.

Im kinda liking it, not because it defies the lore, but because they needed something to be unique. Remember people that this is still a growing developing IP and that changes are expected to improve the game and give it uniqueness and originality... And that is hard to come by so expect ALOT of changes...

O.O Wow. .

You know it really is an big jump from what we saw in origins, the design makes it seem like an whole other game. They changed the elves and dwarves look as well?

Can't wait to see them. .>.>

I don't know why people see warpaint on one qunari and think that all other qunari have the exact same warpaint.

If I see concept art of a human wearing gold armor, I'm not going to assume that all the humans in that game MUST wear gold armor.

The game did feel unique. Or are you saying it didn't 'look' unique. I ask because the two (at least to me )are very different things.

I'm still convinced this is one of 2 things, the game trying to appeal to a broader market (and giving me the finger in the process) and the developers not getting the chance to put them in the first game for whatever reason.

But seriously, though, look at that dude's horns! You can't just cut THOSE off and look like you never had horns at all, ever. That's my problem, that even if it is normal for the Tal-Vashoth to cut off their horns (and I am OK with that, it's a good way to symbolically reject their old lives), they wouldn't look the way they do.

I hate when stuff that isn't broken gets fixed, argh.

Ooh, I don't see that as a bad thing. I loved the Ferai. ^_^

Can't say I care to much for this new look, but meh. It's only aesthetics.

I actually like this change. I really disliked the fact that everything in the DAO universe looked humanoid and bland. I love games/worlds that have many different and unique looking beings, it's a story and gameplay refresher. It's more fun to kill a variety of enemies and it's more fun to experience a world with a variety of unique creatures. After all, if I want to see humanoids over and over again, I could just walk over to my neighbor's house.

I wish they gave the darkspawn this much detail though, they regressed from their previous models. They look like puke colored humans wearing plastic spikes and samurai nonsense.

I like the change.  It fits the lore and the explanation of why Sten and the Tal'Vashoth in Awakening don't have horns makes sense to me.

Looking forward, a little nervously, to seeing the redesigned elves.  I found DAO elves a little too whimsical and would like to see them looking more like the wild natives that came out of the dark and terrified big bad Loghain.  But Maker, please no donkey ears.

Ah, good point. Put that down to staying up way too late, and not reading properly.

This explains a lot about ogres and why they have horns. That's why.

Does this also mean that horns grow when qunari get older, like beard? So Sten did not have horns yet...

Do you think that this means the dwarves will have pointy ears?
