ooo the thread seems to have calmed down a wee bit (unless everyone is just typing up really long posts :?).

Ok so, about the lore aspect and why this design fits with what has been stated previously. Here's my take on it.
According to the unofficial wiki, Gaider said as some point that Qunari architecture resembles mayan architecture. If that's the case then the overall topless-warpaint-thing fits quite well. If we look at ancient tropical cultures (central american and polynesian in particular) toplessness is pretty much the norm. Even now in cultures that maintain these traditions ceremonial dress is generally topless with some type of skirt/loin cloth like lower covering... pretty much what the Qunari in the art is wearing.
Also, the bodypaint or tattoo on the qunari is also comparible to that of these cultures. The geometric lines and very bold placement is very similar to mayan war paint and polynesian (samoan and maori specifically) tattooing.

Effectively this style makes the qunari look like a better equivilent to real world tropical and near-tropical cultures. It's been long established that the cultures of the different game races are inspired and influenced by particular real world cultures, thus it makes sense (to me at least) that Thedas's scientifically advanced tropical culture would be inspired by Mayans, Aztecs, and Polynesian cultures.

The horns I also think fit the existing lore quite well. Aside from the oft repeated part about ogres being born from Qunari brood mothers, there's also the fact that Morrigan refered to Sten as a "proud and noble creature." She didn't say man even though everything about him except for his ears looked extremely human. To be honest I didn't know Sten was another species entirely until it was explained... I thought morrigan was just a tad racist at first

And on the subject of horns I think something else might be important to remember. It's been mentioned (including by me in the most painful moment of my time on the forums) that the other qunari in origins didn't have horns. The removal process has been pointed out and one thing has been neglected.
Weren't all the other Qunari (other than Sten and Armaas) also wearing helmets?
I seem to recall quite clearly that the Qunari mercs all wore helmets... Which can easily hide horn stumps...

aaand
TL;DR version: Mayans were topless and warpainted thousands of years ago. Kratos doesn't have a trademark on the color red. silly panic attacks are just silly.
-edited for weird wording that needed to be less weird.-

I like the new look. IMO they looked pretty generic in origins. They were just tall tan skinned humans. I always felt wrong when Morrigain said "Look at this noble beast", when we first meet Sten. I always thought to myself, beast?....That's just some tall guy.

this makes me want to play as a qunari even more (hopefully we can play as one in DA3, which i hope they start working on soon after DA2, or even before DA2 is done, like DA2 was being worked on before DA1 came out)

Onyx, was it really necessary to quote the whole OP in order to make a comment that lame?

Yeees.... You normally don't see them since ears are covered by beard.

I can see where people will get Polynesian art, but the design is still a little too simplistic for my taste when referencing the culture.

Writers Convience, I love the new direction. You can really see now why Ogres look like they do instead of just big Hurlocks. I noticed Shrieks also look vastly different then their "Origenal" form Im really forward to seeing the developments for Dwarves and Elves. Tolkein sterotypes need to be updated :)

I like the look of the Qunari in DA2 better, but I don't like the fact they look so much different than what Sten did. Unless Sten just happened to be the equivalent of a Quanari freak of nature.

That's one massive beard if it can cover the tips of their ears.:P

I'm sorry but the design of that specific Qunari seems to be something designed with a "Primitive Warrior" look about them. When the back story of the Qunari, was, that they are advanced compared to those on the shores from which the games take place in.

The paint is overbearing and distracting. Unless its just one that has gone off the rails or a group that dressed up that way for intimidation I don't see how it would fit.

EDIT: The horns remind me of Flemeth's horns...

Also, this wallpaper has a larged, behorned man in the Deep Roads along with three other people. A qunari? This one shows Flemeth's horns better.

We think alike! ^_^

You know... 15 days ago I wrote a post stating the same thing! Here is the link to it:

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/3121116/2#3121565

I wouldn't be surprised if Flemeth is, in fact, using the body of a female qnari (or pretending to be one), or that she IS a female qnari.

I like the new design, personally. Although I do wonder if there's a specific guy in the antaam whose job it is to stencil designs on the other guys' chests. I imagine it must be an honored role. Like the guy who always has to dig the latrine.

Since they discovered (I believe) gunpowder, I always related the Qunari to the Chinese culture. But I'm probably the only one who thinks that.

Especially because I'm not even sure how you make adjustments to the elves. The only thing different about them in DAO is their size and structure. Exactly what can you add? Night Elf ears (*shudder*)? The dwarves sometimes don't have beards, and the wimmins are pretty good looking. Do they now have beards too?

I'm at a loss at what a "redesign" could mean.

As Matt said in the article, the point is to create some visual distance between the races-- so they present a different silhouette, whereas before the elves could pretty much be summed as as "humans with pointy ears" and the dwarves as "short humans". Like he also said in the article, however, the difference in the look of the elves and dwarves is not as dramatic as the qunari. You've seen one dwarf already (Varric, and he's not atypical-- excepting the fact that he doesn't have a beard, but that's just his personal style) and presumably you'll see elves before long. They're not sporting antennae or three heads or anything. ;)

Their architecture is supposedly somewhat Mayan based, so I always imagined that they would follow along that vein. At least, I think I read that somewhere on the forums.

Kind of the idea I had.  Also they are presented in DA as aggressive, yet focused.  Strict in their ways so to speak.  So I kind of assumed so along those lines.

So... was Sten "supposed" to be white-skinned and kind of demonic looking? Or do most of the Qunari look human-ish?

Until now, I was under the impression that the Qunari were 100% human, and only different from Fereldan's in skin-color and culture for the most part.

Now that I've have some time to get use to this new look the more I don't mind it, but if in future games Sten comes waltzing in looking like that then I totally want an option saying "Dude, What happened?!" complete with freaked out expression on the warden.
