Reminds me of the big race from Final Fantasy MMO's, only with something resembling personality.  I like it.  Remember, it could always look worse.

Mr.Gaider I was wondering if it's not too soon or too much of an spoiler could you please explain the difference between an horned and unhorned Qunari? is it something akin to genitics like maybe different races of qunari like the difference between an Caucasian person and an Asian person?

It may be genetic-- I'm hesitant to get into a discussion of genetics in fantasy races, but certainly the Talmassrans selectively breed qunari and from the nature of qunari society it might not be too far a stretch to suppose that they breed them to suit their roles more closely.

Hornless qunari are not rare freaks of nature-- simply uncommon. Most of the Ben-Hassrath are hornless, for instance, and thus your average qunari might be forgiven for thinking that a lack of horns is very intimidating.

Ah, Thank you for the more detailed explanation and for taking the time to answer.

Could the hornless qunari be the product of the traditional (horned) qunari + human mix?

That would presuppose the notion that qunari and humans could interbreed... and/or the possibility that qunari had encountered humans prior to coming to Thedas, wouldn't it? Anything is possible.

Good grief. So they've basically said screw continuity at this point.

To be fair, they never said they DIDN'T have horns

They're changing dwarves and elves too and we saw entire communities of them...

I would think of it as updating them. That way, not everyone has the exact same body. The article said horns were only present on some Qunari, so we may see some of the "Sten's" anyway

“Not all qunari have horns,” says Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider. “Some are born without them, but it has never been considered a defect. Instead the mark is considered special, indicating one who is clearly meant for a special role in their society" - From the GI article.

David said that not having horns was special... and I think that this has confused a few people. So as I see it, some Qunari have horns, some don't, and the ones that leave Qunari society cut off their horns- or at least the ones we have seen so far have. This is a fairly flimsy excuse if we see horned Qunari everywhere, and nary a hornless one in sight, but I've seen worse. As to his size/paint it isn't that different from Sten, if Sten was stylized and painted.

I like that Bioware is making races look separate, just so long as I can recognize the characters and races. Minor changes are fine, but I don't want to go "what the **** is that?" Which, if that picture was dropped into origins, I probably would have.

Sorry, have you seen Sten's concept art? No, I don't think he's 'three times his size', and considering that it is *just* concept art, I'm not that worried. People come in all shapes and sizes - I don't see the problem with this one having a different facial structure. Lack of jowls like the ones that Sten was sporting in game isn't a bad thing, in my opinion.

Edit: Spelling, mkay.

Indeed. Concept sten looks much closer to this concept Qunari than it does to in-game Sten

I don't think you can draw conclusions from concept art. I mean, just look at concept Sten! or even concept Alistair. I'd have been all 'keep your rose, dude. Seriously.' ;)

So, why qunari who abandon the Qun cut off their horns? Horns are directly connected to their religion?

I like the new design, and I'm willing to accept that Qunari come in different colours and some have horns while other's don't. I like the idea of making the races look more distinct.

However, I would like to know: will we still see bronze and/or hornless Quarni around the place? It's going to seem weird if every Quanari in Ferelden - Tal'Vashoth and the Sten's expedition both - are one type and every Quanri in the Free Marches is another.

@Riona45: Cool. Glad I could help :D

And as for the size difference: Sten and the others weren't as 'big' as this guy because they lost their weight benches.. True story..

Please have one race that can't interbreed.

The horns are fine, I can deal with that. But they're still bronze-skinned, right? Surely to change their skin colour would be too big a change, when all the Codex entries in DA:O make specific note of their golden skin, and it was one of the defining characteristics of the species. Why does the Qunari in the picture look like he has blue-grey skin? Is it body paint?

Ah, but there's a difference between "able to have sex with" and "and to reproduce with", no?

They don't have to have the animal face. Maybe what they could take from the Na'vi are the feathers and the braids and the beads. Consider them without the blue, the tail, and the Na'vi face and they might be cool.

So just more flexible?  Or do you mean the hair and clothing?

Already there are quite a few differences between DAO and the books, such as elves having unsettling, cat-like eyes and the Dalish wearing colorful robes along with leathers.  Shoot, where was this guy in Origins?!

Yeah, you really have to work to pull off a look like this for your own Dalish character. I wanted my Dalish hunters at the beginning of the game to be badass, wild hunters. Instead we get Tamlen. Don't get me wrong, I love Tamlen, but he's hardly a wild-hunter-badass.

Yes, but they need to survive the first, to attempt the second.

So do the baby qunari have proportionately large horns at birth, or small unformed horns? If they have the proportionate versions, the female qunaris must have super high pain tolerance. Image IPB
