The ogres were made from qunari right? They have huge horns, so it's not like it is out of nowhere. I'm cool with it, Sten just looked like a really tan and big guy.

You're right, it's not out of no where. I remember a while ago someone mentioned to me that a Codex entry tells tales of the qunari invaders appearing as if they had horns, but I took it to mean helmets.

At the same time, if horns aren't all that common, why do all of the ogres have them? Is it like some sort of latant gene? Are only horned qunari affected by taint?

I guess what I really hate is that they look like "barbarians", which is something I always thought the qunari weren't. I hope they get more sophisticated clothing.

I like that they look different than humans this time. From a pure aesthetic point, I simply like the way they look. I think it's good that the races will have a clearer, visual identity. The dwarves were pretty distinct already though, what with their vertically challenged forms.

At least they look unique now, and not like tall humans.

I am guessing that not ALL the Qunari we meet will have horns. Only some special ones.

I like it. The only problem is that they weren't like this in the first game. They look more like the DA Ogres. What I want to know is, leaving aside the horns, are Qunari supposed to look like this rather than what they did in origins. If we see Sten again, in a future game, will we recognise him?

Sorry. This makes me want to throw up. If there were any illusions that this game has any worht whatsover, they are gone now.
Whoever is designing this, comes from a deep deep abyss of gaming.

I wonder if that qunari is the same qunari from the wallpaper, and if he's a companion?

The article.

Article wrote...

BioWare’s been forthcoming about the new art style for Dragon Age 2, but even that didn’t prepare us for the surprise of seeing the redesigned qunari. Unlike the strange but decidedly humanoid qunari Sten from Origins, the images of the Dragon Age 2 qunari that we saw were muscular, nearly demonic-looking creatures. The most striking difference was the addition of horns. As it turns out, Dragon Age lore has an answer for why we haven’t seen them on qunari before.

“Not all qunari have horns,” says Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider. “Some are born without them, but it has never been considered a defect. Instead the mark is considered special, indicating one who is clearly meant for a
special role in their society—as a Ben-Hassrath who enforces religious law or as an envoy to other races. It is also not uncommon for qunari who abandon their beliefs to remove their own horns, for reasons not yet clear.”

The change in qunari appearances have practical roots as well. “Art wanted to create more space between the races so we changed the way the qunari looked,” says senior artist Matt Goldman. “We have also changed the way elves and dwarves look for that matter, but qunari seem the most dramatic because you only ever saw Sten in Dragon Age: Origins.”

I hear the Kratos jokes already.

EDIT: The horns remind me of Flemeth's horns...

Also, this wallpaper has a larged, behorned man in the Deep Roads along with three other people. A qunari? This one shows Flemeth's horns better.

I'd take Kratos w/ horns any day as my Player Created Character over EMO Hake the Bearded Skinny Jean Hipster

No...they really do have horns?
Uh...I'm not sure what I think about that yet. Though I agree they needed some differentiating. Sten just looked like a kind-of-tall guy, and not a different race.

Yeah, not sure what I think of it either.  They look cool, sure.  But at a certain point, cool just becomes ridiculous, and I wonder a little if they're toeing the line somewhat here.  Things don't have to be this over-the-top to be cool.

That is a very, very good point.  In addition, the ogres had the same extremely muscular, aggressive build and stance as these redesigned qunari.  So I suppose it makes some sense.  In fact, it almost looks like they spliced the ogres and the DA:O qunari.

It is actually canon that some of them have horns. That's why Ogres have horns.

You know, that's kind of awesome.

I don't mind the horns, they seem like an original add-on. Plus,  the qunari really needed something to differentiate them. Elves are short and pointy-eared, dwarves are even shorter but outfitted with epic beards of manliness... and now qunari have horns. *pictures Hawke fighting qunari, dressed like a matador*

I wonder if that's body paint or if they have different skin tones like humans... well, wildly different skintones, but still. I preferred the bronze-skinned, purple-eyed qunari from DAO.

Also, I am shaking with fear as I picture possible changes that could have been made to the elves. One or two minor tweaks would be fine, just don't give them tails or red eyes or whatnot. Do not disappoint me, BW, please. The DAO elves are among my favourite elves ever. Don't f*ck them up.
I don't care about the dwarves, I probably won't be able to enjoy them anyway. It's kind of subconscious. No matter the setting, I just can't bring myself to find dwarves even remotely pleasant to look at. :alien::sick::D

I do think that we will still see hornless Qunari. David says in the article that only the ones that have a special place in society have horns.

What? What? How is Hawke (and it's Hawke, not Hake) emo? Where...I mean...good lord, where would you get that? And they have explained numerous times, the jean thing was simply an early development thing. The qunari would probably be wearing them too.

I doubt Bioware will ever let us see a female Qunari, because their entire fanbase would drop dead in the fashion the bad guys die in Raiders of the Lost Ark in the opening of the Ark scene.

To be honest though, I'm more worried about the changes to the elves and dwarves...  They looked just fine before, what other changes could they make other than to make them look more alien?  I liked that they all looked like different variations of humanity.  It made all of the racism that existed more poignant because they looked just slightly different from us.

Well, I'll go ahead and recant a statement I made a few days ago about their statement of "separating themselves" from other popular fantasy series as simply being an excuse to get more edgy with the Darkspawn.

With that said, yikes.

Do we now assume Origins and Awakening never existed seeing these radical departures in character and creature designs.

I actually really like that look. Although the horns sort of seemed random at first. I like the more distinctive look that Dragon Age is getting. Also, it sort of makes ogres make more sense. Their appearance never quite added up completely before.

Yeah, I agree.  No falling victim to the whole, "Well, our elves are actually called E'Lves, and have blue skin and silver eyes!  Look at their uniqueness!"  I've seen that in too much fantasy to be convinced it won't happen.

Flemeth's horns are strongly reminiscent of that qunari's horns...and her hair is white there, not grey...just sayin'.
