I missed that line about Elves and Dwarves changing. I am filled with...apprehension. We know you want to look unique, BioWare; just...don't go crazy. Please.

Image IPBImage IPBI hope they don't either, but it's like they said; it seems a lot more dramatic because we only ever really saw Sten.  As Kordaris points out, there were a few enemies, but they had one or two generic looks for the qunari grunts and that was it, so I wouldn't expect them to be intricately designed.  Besides, the way they look in-game might not be as extreme as concept art.

So I guess I was on drugs when I saw that qunari mercenaries, quneri guards in Denerim ?

Sten was the only qunari we really saw up close though.

I am guessing that the specific Qunari in these screenshots is a religious leader or something...which may explain the tattoos and horns.

Yeah, I agree.  No falling victim to the whole, "Well, our elves are actually called E'Lves, and have blue skin and silver eyes!  Look at their uniqueness!"  I've seen that in too much fantasy to be convinced it won't happen.

Especially because I'm not even sure how you make adjustments to the elves. The only thing different about them in DAO is their size and structure. Exactly what can you add? Night Elf ears (*shudder*)? The dwarves sometimes don't have beards, and the wimmins are pretty good looking. Do they now have beards too?

I'm at a loss at what a "redesign" could mean.

Minus the dozens of Qunari mercs we encountered, sure.

Hey cool, our theory back in the DA timeline thread about some Qunari having horns and that being a sign of special status turned out to be kind of right!

Maybe they'll handwave the art changes for elves and dwarves by saying they're from different areas of Thedas. I mean, we don't expect humans all over Thedas to look and dress the same. If Tevinter looked the same as Ferelden which looked the same as Kirkwall, we'd all accuse BioWare of being uncreative. Thedas--hopefully--isn't going to be a Planet of Hats where each race has their "hat" and no differentiation within the race, so I can see justification for new art styles of dwarf and elf if they're culturally distinct from the Ferelden ones.

Image IPBImage IPBI think it might mean clothing/armor styles and things like that.  Maybe....I think there's more room for change with elves than dwarves though.

Great, the more I hear about this game, the less I want it. I hope they don't ruin the elves and dwarves as much as the now ruined qunari.

I think you should stop trolling. Somehow, we don't get what we want.

The Qunari mercs all looked the same, we never talked to them, and we didn't see them face to face. Not that I remember, anyway.

We fight a band of qunari mercs in a Crow quest. We see the mercs in the Pearl, and in Sten's dream. They all look alike...still, they said the horns are considered "special" , so maybe they're not supposed to leave their country?

That's a possibility.  Though a kind of far-fetched one considering we don't see any horn-stumps among the cornrows   Or maybe it's just that the qunari with horns are too cool to be sent to brown, doggy-smelling, Ferelden.

I really hope they mean just simple clothing changes, but it sure sounded like a character design change... That doesn't imply to me just clothing.  I'd expect different clothing styles in a different country after all but that doesn't seem like what they're talking about...

Don't make the dwarves and elves weird and alien looking just to be different Bioware... If a dwarf or elf is going to be a love interest I want them to at least be sort of human looking... If I want to romance aliens I got ME2 (and I do like ME2).

I like the new look better, actually. I never much liked the look of the qunari in DAO. Continuity-wise, I don't think it's a stretch to say that some qunari have horns. After all, ogres (which come from qunari stock) have horns.

I just take it to mean that only the more important Qunari have horns, and I guess they wouldn't really have a reason to visit Ferelden.

To be honest though, I'm more worried about the changes to the elves and dwarves...  They looked just fine before, what other changes could they make other than to make them look more alien?  I liked that they all looked like different variations of humanity.  It made all of the racism that existed more poignant because they looked just slightly different from us.

The dwarf in the concept art doesn't look all that changed. His clothes look different, maybe.

Actually, they said not having horns is considered special. Which would explain why Sten was sent to Ferelden to learn about the Blight. He's one of the special hornless Qunari who serves as an "envoy to other races."

Also, all the mercenaries we saw were likely Tal-Vashoth (as Qunari who still follow the Qun don't make much sense as mercenaries), and as DG said in the article, "It is also not uncommon for qunari who abandon their beliefs to remove their own horns, for reasons not yet clear."

That said, I like the new look. I kind of want to play a Qunari even more now.

To me they look like a completely different species from what we know, like a different branch of qunari.

Like Hellboy. Joy.

I'm not a huge Qunari fan, though it's odd to think that these wildmen barbarian looking guys are the ones with the tech and the cannons.

"We have also changed the way elves and dwarves look for that matter,"

It's one thing to have a distinct style, and it's another to say "we don't just have elves, we have Wood Elves or Sun Elves or Aquatic Elves". I'd like to see them come up with something a little more inventive than that. They did a really good job with the cultures in Origins, so we'll see.

“Not all qunari have horns,” says Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider.
“Some are born without them, but it has never been considered a defect.
Instead the mark is considered special, indicating one who is clearly
meant for a special role in their society—as a Ben-Hassrath who enforces
religious law or as an envoy to other races. It is also not uncommon
for qunari who abandon their beliefs to remove their own horns, for
reasons not yet clear.”

So... If I read this right, I think it says the ones without horns are considered special (minus the forcefully removed ones).  So Sten would be special, being on a scouting mission to gather intel on the Blight for the Arashok.  I think awhile back Mary Kirby said something that most of the mercenaries we saw would be Qunari who abandoned their beliefs and being mercnenaries is the only job they could get (I have no idea where this was said though).

So, by process of elimination, the generic run of the mill normal qunari who live in Par Vollen are the ones with horns.

I've got to say... I kind of like this actually. I always felt the Qunari were "too human", this helps.

I'm curious what's in store for elves and dwarves though.
