Most of us  expected a game set in the same world, with similiar game system and traits that made the game succesfull, with consequences of their choices being resolved or continued  so that plot lines can be finished. If you instead offer another world, with completely different game options and mostly unrelated to Dragon Age 1, then why call it Dragon Age 2 and not a separate other game or at least spin-off?

Because this is Dragon Age to us

Cue the stereotypical "but it's not YOUR game" response.

Having said that, how many different ways has Link looked?  Did we still accept him? Or Mario? Or James Bond?

That's an excellent point, though I will say that nowadays it's almost the opposite where people expect these classic characters to look fresh every incarnation.

Gosh, I hate being the devil's advocate...but...

Link's a different character almost every time. The times when he is not, he never looks different. Mario goes through the barest changes, and James Bond is played by a different person in various different incarnations. Generally they go for people with the same look, until they rebooted the series.

I, uh, just want to be fair. I feel dirty.

You know, I'm really beginning to feel old. Maybe it's just the games I grew up on, but I've never really taken the graphics in a game to be literally 100% what things are supposed to look like. I mean, for example, I never thought my character in BG actually looked like the on-screen avatar.

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't really get this whole "visual retcon" idea people are going on about. The devs try to make the game look as close to what they want it to look like as possible, but it's not always successful, and future iterations in a series often make changes to how characters look to get them closer to how the devs imagined them.

I don't recall...but was there this much angst over the change in portraits for the NPCs from BG1 to BG2 (admittedly, the only BG2 portrait I prefer is Edwin's)?

I didn't go through all 34 pages so I don't know if this has been brought up. My theory is that Flemeth is a Qunari. If you look at the concept art she has the same style horns as them. From the screen of her coming out of the fire she looks younger and her hair is White. Her hair in DAO was more of a dirty gray. I'm kinda wondering if she had another Girl lined up behind Morrigan that she could take the body of. Any theory's?

They were sighted about 400 years before what happened in the game. Flemeth is way older.

Though I do wonder where the ogres came from that were in the previous blights. From the codex:

"Traditionally, they only appear during a Blight, but some records claim that ogres have been spotted in the Deep Roads hunting alone or in small groups."

So, where did they get Qunari to use if they were discovered between the fourth and fifth blight?

I'm constantly amazed by the things you write. Where did you get that the Qunari are the most advanced civilization on Thedas? The only advancement we know of is gunpowder

Gunpowder weapons require an extreme level of technological sophistication combining metalurgy, chemistry, mathematics.
No other civilisation on Thedas has such sophistication.
Unless of course they retcon Orlais into having airplanes. After all you "you never heard they didn't have any". Or Antiva into having laser rifles.

That's not being the devil's advocate, that's saying what you think is accurate ^_^  I haven't played too many Mario games so I wouldn't know, but I guess you're right about Link.  The cel-shaded Link was very different in character too.  Which makes me wonder what Skyward Sword Link will be like...part cel and part realistic?  Strange.

Well, in that case, it would be because we never heard they didn't have any. I'm not saying that would not be weird in the fantasy setting of Theadas; I'm saying that wouldn't be a retcon. A reveal is not a retcon.

Ok, another question.

Will we get to see non-horned Qunari in DA2 alongside their horned bretheren? I think this would help show that this is indeed not a retcon.

I like these new qunari. Finally the chantry can claim that demons are invading and we need to unite under them to fight back the invasion. I hope the changes to dwarves and elves only make the series stronger and more unique.

Well we didn't see any naked humans in Thedas as well, come to think of it. Each could have a miniature gray alien living beneath its belly in a cage. That wouldn't be a retcon as well technically.:wizard:

I personally liked that the races didn't look dramatically different. It gave an interesting poignancy to all of the racism in the game. Within game, the characters saw radical changes, but looking on as outsiders with saw very little. It was rather similiar to what we do to each other in the real world. I guess that poignancy wasn't deliberate...

Wait.. Are you telling me that all those prisoners in nothing but their small clothes were all but a glitch? Damn it! I knew I hadn't seen any naked people. Brings a tear to my eye every time.

Seriously, Kor, it's just a game. Why are you so dead-set on taking it this far?

Huh. Maybe the Qunari sent small scouting parties to Thedas before they actually invaded?

I have to say I give Kordaris the edge on this one.

I consider a retcon the fact that something who plays an important role now, was never mentioned earlier, even if "we never said it wasn't like this"

that's cheap tactics bioware. If the elven alienage was built on the surfice of an ancient reaper ship you can't just say "we never said the opposite"

Just admit you are making up lore on the fly. It's fine. Even Hollywood does it all the time.

But that's not what retcon means.

That's not the meaning of the word.

Even Hollywood does it all the time.

Way to use a completely illogical and inaccurate analogy.

But they did refer to Qunari as "horned giants" before. We simply presumed these would have to be just helmets because we never got to see an actual horned Qunari.

Article wrote...

BioWare’s been forthcoming about the new art style for Dragon Age 2, but even that didn’t prepare us for the surprise of seeing the redesigned qunari. Unlike the strange but decidedly humanoid qunari Sten from Origins, the images of the Dragon Age 2 qunari that we saw were muscular, nearly demonic-looking creatures. The most striking difference was the addition of horns. As it turns out, Dragon Age lore has an answer for why we haven’t seen them on qunari before.

“Not all qunari have horns,” says Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider. “Some are born without them, but it has never been considered a defect. Instead the mark is considered special, indicating one who is clearly meant for a
special role in their society—as a Ben-Hassrath who enforces religious law or as an envoy to other races. It is also not uncommon for qunari who abandon their beliefs to remove their own horns, for reasons not yet clear.”

The change in qunari appearances have practical roots as well. “Art wanted to create more space between the races so we changed the way the qunari looked,” says senior artist Matt Goldman. “We have also changed the way elves and dwarves look for that matter, but qunari seem the most dramatic because you only ever saw Sten in Dragon Age: Origins.”

I hear the Kratos jokes already.

EDIT: The horns remind me of Flemeth's horns...

Also, this wallpaper has a large, behorned man in the Deep Roads along with three other people. A qunari? This one shows Flemeth's horns better.

Before getting all up in arms, remember to read the Dev Comments

This is really a cool/handsome archetype, Qunari or not.
