So I guess I was on drugs when I saw that qunari mercenaries, quneri guards in Denerim ?

Sten was the only qunari we really saw up close though.

I am guessing that the specific Qunari in these screenshots is a religious leader or something...which may explain the tattoos and horns.

Minus the dozens of Qunari mercs we encountered, sure.

The Qunari mercs all looked the same, we never talked to them, and we didn't see them face to face. Not that I remember, anyway.

We fight a band of qunari mercs in a Crow quest. We see the mercs in the Pearl, and in Sten's dream. They all look alike...still, they said the horns are considered "special" , so maybe they're not supposed to leave their country?

Well, neither are regular Qunari unless tolds to as in Stens case. At one point Sten made the remark of the mercs "being lost to us" or something like that. And as for the lore reasoning, obviously it's just a cheap excuse to have a reason for that drastic change. You can take away the horns and the paint and still have a hard time legitly explaining how Qunari such as Sten and that are possibly from the same race/species, it'd be like someone trying to explain how a chicken and a turtle are from the same gene pool.

Yeah I'm mostly concerned about the Elves...I hope they don't put those massive Night Elf ears on that make you wonder how they manage to put a shirt on.

Changing a non-playable race is one thing, but convincing people who played as Elves and Dwarves that their characters should have looked totally different is something else entirely.

I bet Sten removed his horns after he lost his sword. *Nods head*

That's a possibility.  Though a kind of far-fetched one considering we don't see any horn-stumps among the cornrows   Or maybe it's just that the qunari with horns are too cool to be sent to brown, doggy-smelling, Ferelden.

It's hidden under the cornrows in his hair. Yup. :P

Hmm... I really like the new look of the Qunari, at least they won't just look like tall humans; I agree that there needs to be more differences between the races, too.

Also, this design may not represent what most, or even the majority of qunari look like, as it states that not all of them have horns. Maybe this is a specific character in the game, someone of high importance....or something.

Actually, they said not having horns is considered special. Which would explain why Sten was sent to Ferelden to learn about the Blight. He's one of the special hornless Qunari who serves as an "envoy to other races."

Hmm. It is sort of confusing:
“Not all qunari have horns,” says Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider.
“Some are born without them, but it has never been considered a defect.
Instead the mark is considered special, indicating one who is clearly
meant for a
special role in their society—as a Ben-Hassrath who
enforces religious law or as an envoy to other races. It is also not
uncommon for qunari who abandon their beliefs to remove their own horns,
for reasons not yet clear.”

Is horns not considered a defect, or is being born without horns not considered a defect?

Rereading it, I think you are right.

I like it. The only problem is that they weren't like this in the first game. They look more like the DA Ogres. What I want to know is, leaving aside the horns, are Qunari supposed to look like this rather than what they did in origins. If we see Sten again, in a future game, will we recognise him?

I do think that we will still see hornless Qunari. David says in the article that only the ones that have a special place in society have horns.

Yep, it says there will still be hornless qunari, but horns were not the only change. Their physique is quite a lot heavier up on the shoulders, their legs are different, their hands are now clawed etc. Leaving aside the horns, is this what Qunari, including Sten, are supposed to look like?

Actually, reading the line again, it seems that being born without horns is actually something special. And if you leave your country, it's not uncommon for the horns to be removed.

Again, this doesn't come out of nowhere. Ogres have horns, and there's a Codex that hints they have horns too.

It's like a lust demon crossed with a ogre.  I don't know what to think of this.

Hopefully Hawke has something to say.

Does this mean that the qunari will be the enemy in da2 and Hawke will become champion for defeating the qunari.

I guess some would even defend Elves with chicken feet.

That was... unexpected.

Still not entirely sure how to take this. It's interesting, though. I understand why they did it. It also explains why Ogres have horns.

Image IPBImage IPBIt's concept art so I think that it ends up kind off stylized.  Take Flemeth, for example. I think it was Mary Kirby who explained that her body wasn't quite as model-like in-game and she doesn't look as extremely young as in the art.

we only saw sten-like qunari in dao because there was only one model for qunari npcs, that's why.

also my question again: how do horned people wear full helmets? can we use hawke's helmets with qunari companions?

Man, I totally didn't think the giant muscular dude race would *need* the XTREEM makeover. Heavens forbid they're JUST giant muscular dudes.

Where are the glowing eyes, metal arms and dozens of pouches??? If you're turning this game into a 90s comic book, might as well go all the way.

Okay guys, relax.

I thought about it for a while, and then suddenly realized that this is concept art.

If you don't understand, look at the DAO development sketches for LelianaAlistair (!), Zevran (!!!) and Sten himself. I think the qunari won't look quite as... excessive... as we fear they may be.

Basically, let us not trust concept art.

Qunari do convert people to their religion/philosophy. It's possible that before their arrival Sten's type of species was assimilated into the Qunari and brought over or Sten is the result of a human and a Qunari interbreeding. Wild guessing from me but i'm sure one of the Developers will be here any moment now before the theories get even crazier.

To be fair, we've only seen like 3
Qunari ever. That's hardly representative of an entire race of people.
And keep in mind this is just concept art...I doubt they ALL have those
full-body tattoos.

(And I only say 3 to leave room in case I forgot one...I only remember Sten and the merchant in the mines in Awakening).

You have Sten, 2 of his former now dead compagnions in the fade (if you bring Sten in your group while cleaning out the circle tower) and a merchant in Awakening. But personally havent seen the last (dont have Awakening)

Hmmm... this reminds me of the Overlords from Childhood's End for some reason.

Why not antlers? Everything seems to have horns, but few fantasy creatures have antlers. Maybe the elves will have antlers now, ha!

Honestly, right now, I'm kind of laughing, but I'll get over it and see this as new info on the qunari. It is just surprising, and I don't think it breaks continuity or lore, as long as most are bronze giants and not balrogs.

Now that I think about it, it makes PERFECT sense, as ogres had horns and now there is a clearer connection between the two now.

So long as they don't make all the Qunari into some watered-down brute race like that image might look like. If they all hunch over and talk like Rubbish Hero, I'll be pretty disappointed.
