The fellow on the front page doesn't seem to have nipples.

I don't think there is a spell that completely protects from missile fire.
But can they shield themselves from direct hit, fire, concussion, being ejected in the air by explosion,  suffacation?
Such mage though would be very powerful, rare and had to be dealt individually. For mass warfare he would be not a problem.

Can anyone tell me if the Qunari can cast magic? I only recall sten ever talking about ships and canon balls, not magic, but can they wield magic or cannot do it due to racial shortcoming like the dwarfs?

Both quotes were in response to me stating that clockwork is an equally impressive advancement that puts dwarves in the same realm as Qunari.

Clockwork only requires advancements in maths, engineering and perhaps a bit in metallurgy(although you can make non metal clocks from water and stones and such). Thus chemistry is missing which is required for firerarms possesed by qunari.

Clockwork and clocks are not the same thing. Clockwork is a mechanism that uses gears and an internal power source (wound springs for example) to sustain its own function over a period of time (ie, not requiring constant human interaction).
Since the clockwork in question was a giant metal door I'd say metalurgy was a pretty big component.
And again, smokeless coal would require knowledge of chemistry. Irrelivant to where it can be used the knowledge would still be required to invent it.

Yes. which is basically what i said a few posts back -- lot of mages and warriors beat not as many cannons and larger warriors. It doesn't really tell much about how well mages stack against the cannons when in comparable numbers.

Yes, they have mages.
Perhaps this is one pictured.

Even medieval armors protected you from gunfire in the 16th century. And the Ottoman Empire is similar to the quinari expansion.

Yep, you're right. In fact, gunpowder invigorated the advancement of plate armor.

Personally, I like it. It looks bad ass and something to be feared (or at least, treated with a degree of respect and caution)

They can. But if they're caught they get their tongues cut out.

One of the developers said not to be confused by the name IIRC.

The way I see it though, a sentient being that can literally rain fire down on their enemy, and create earthquakes beats a weapon that can only be used as that; a weapon, which is not easy to maneuvor, or transport. And the fact that Minathrous still stands is a perfect example of magic being an advancement of its own.

Plus, as Vader once said: "The ability to destroy a planet is nothing compared to the the power of the Force"

Yeah, a sentient being can die and we will need 20 years to gain another.
How long do you need to build a cannon.

It was pointed out above, but only when guns were fired at close range could penetrate full plate armor.

I'm still waiting for an explanation for Minathrous.

Yet infantry and cavarly still existed, battles weren't just cannons shooting at cannons.

Perhaps; on the other hand, one would need to consider that when Qunari landed in Thedas for the first time, their armies armed with cannons tore through city walls and made great advancements into territories which were quite familiar with mages. That would imply the destructive strength of cannons against fortifications is quite larger than what mages can do (since if it was as easy or easier with the mages, any country could easily match what the Qunari did) So maybe it's a situation of having excellent tool for one purpose (cannons) vs not as focused tool but much more versatile one (mages)

A troll has gotten all of you guys to argue that cannons are primitive and useless... the Qunari are still a fighting force to be reckoned with. Their cannons help in this. The Chantry were able to repel them for a number of reasons, but that doesn't mean the Qunari are wimps. The Chantry hasn't gone over to their land and crushed the Qunari there, and the Qunari still seem intent on taking over Thedas.

All of this arguing over which magical race's magical penis is the biggest is really unnecessary, though.

Sounds more like a preparation issue. Thedas wasn't prepared for cannons and the Qunari weren't prepared for mages that aren't pets.

It is mostly my fault, I always find the need to have the last say in an argument. I'll stop now.

But the maths goes, if you can only do harm to an armored thing up close, and you need a gun, gun power, bullets and reloading of gun, why use guns at all? I can crit harder and more with mah 1h sword sans the hassle! And how come arrows never run out?
