The past few days saw a massive influx of new people, I think that may have been a contributing factor.

Hey, I had a topic goin', so you might as well tell me what you think.  If your Shep had a mom or a close parental figure, what would he or she think of her son/child stand-in going out with a quarian?

Wow that last one got pretty big...and Tali is a very useful as a squadmate. I never really utilized her combat drone, but now I've found that it can be very useful in a pinch.

Personally i believe it is because it is easier for combat aboard ships. Fill a hall with a wide enough shread of lead and whatever is in the way won't be walking out.

I initially thought that quarians would be proficient mainly in close quarter combat, do to on ship combat seeming more common.  But I'm not sure that's the reasoning, given we see the quarians in plenty of other battle situations.  I would assume that she just trained with a shotgun since she started, whether that was her choice is what I'm curious about.  Given her relationship with Rael, I'm inclined to believe that he somehow influenced her choice.  Maybe Rael was a shotgunner as well.

I always thought it was because Quarian military doctrine focuses on close-Quarters combat, as suits a race that lives entirely on spaceships. However, most of the Marines seems to favour AR's so who knows.

Shotguns have a lot of kickback. Tali's a female. Do the math.

I was being serious. Quarians prefer CQC, but shotguns are very short range, high risk, and Tali isn't exactly the most durable person.

I don't have a spacer Shep, but just making one up, I definitely see the reaction as being surprised and shocked at first, but not having any problems with it after meeting Tali and seeing what she means to Shep.

I've also felt the shotgun/pistol combination was for close quarter combat. It can be modified for other battle situations, but Tali wasn't exactly trained to be a battle commander. Other quarians like Kal'Reegar appear to carry some heavier weapons for that.

Assault rifles, especially carbine size ones like the Avengers, are very good all purpose weapons. Makes sense that that would be their preference.

Tali, however, has always been part of a much more individual team. Ship board doctrine probably emphasized shotguns and she had a knack for it. She might also favor the stopping power, she can take a shot and put somebody on their rear and then go back to hacking, fixing, whatever.

Because it's such close quarters on ships, Tali probably doesn't have a choice about whether the enemy gets into short range.

True  but what we see of her durability  is based off of Bioware's Mass Effect battle systems which lacks seriously in the  hand to hand combat  department.  I  would take a gander that most  Quarains Tali included are great with a Pistol and  Knife combination.  Sense most combat for them  would  in ship corridors.
