I suppose I'm just pessimistic. I would like to believe that there would be, or could be peace between ourselves and whatever races there are out there, but the human mindset throughout history seems to be "OH! Look! Something different than me! Let's enslave and/or kill it!"
Still, if contact is ever made in my lifetime, I'd be one of the first in line to meet them where I'll either get to learn about a new race, or be one of the first to be zapped by their laser guns.
Win/Win.
Like those insane people in 'Independence Day'?

Who knows. We've never met aliens, so really, we don't know how we'll react. Humanity is more 'mature' than we where hundreds of years ago. We're more open minded about this stuff. Yeah, there will be the 'Terra Firma' or 'Cerberus' types, which I love how bioware put them into ME, organizations like that would and will exist. However, they do not speak for the whole of humanity.
They might think just like us, we're walking proof of that possibility. They could and will have faults and strong points. No one is perfect, that, I think, applies to both human and alien.
One of the reasons I love Mass Effect. Sure, the aliens have been around longer, have had more time to evolve, but they as people, are the same. Emotions and feelings are instilled into all species. That technology goes only so far. We humans tend to learn fast, for we want to be the best. So if we get a hold of alien tech thousands of years ahead of us, we'll find a way to harness it, and use it. It's what we do.
