If whatever life we find, is intelligent and space fairing, why be hostile? They must know what we do and more, how big the galaxy is, how many resources there are, so fighting for space... is, well, doesn't make since. Unless we are in their system, but they should realize that, hey, we're new, we don't know. If they are naturally aggressive to the point to where they would attack anything, then they wouldn't of made it as far, for they would of killed each other. Us humans are aggressive, we are survivalists. However we are very loving, or have the capacity to be.
The only reason they would be hostile, is if they have a religion that claims everything 'unholy' and kill us all, or they're just ass holes.
Then again, this is all speculation, we simply won't know until it happens.

Didn't Stephen Hawking make a recent comment suggestion that we should reconsider our efforts to contact aliens, since they would inevitably attempt to destroy or enslave us, as the white man did the native americans. I prefer to believe in enlightened aliens, though. It's sad to think of a universe filled with beings as ignorant and closed minded as the worst of humans.
I suppose I'm just pessimistic. I would like to believe that there would be, or could be peace between ourselves and whatever races there are out there, but the human mindset throughout history seems to be "OH! Look! Something different than me! Let's enslave and/or kill it!"
Still, if contact is ever made in my lifetime, I'd be one of the first in line to meet them where I'll either get to learn about a new race, or be one of the first to be zapped by their laser guns.
Win/Win.
