Living in a suit your whole life really can't be good for your complexion.

An assumption that doesn't factor in potential capabilities of the super advanced suits.  Give a race of geniuses 3 centuries to build a suit that doesn't wreck your complexion and I think you'll be fine personally.

I think that the Quarians would pretty much place priority on everything else but trivial facial aesthetics.  They cannot throw money around - I can see them omitting functions for maintenance of complexion in light of that.

It certainly wouldn't be priority, but its been a long time, and they may have even had the suits before the Morning Wars, so even longer.  Comfort and aesthetics is still a concern, if far down the list.

When your economy and empire is destroyed, they can't waste time and resources making suits that keep you pretty - especially considering how infrequent Quarians show their faces to each other.
Comfort is going to be higher on the list, because that is far less trivial.

Even being in the suit for a few years would probably cause some pretty nasty skin damage.

It's not mentioned but I'm pretty sure they used those suits on the Citadel when they visited there.  Their immune system would have demanded it.  So I believe it's a safe bet that anything cosmetically protective would have already been in place.

Again, that's an assumption.  I see no reason to assume that the suits are anything like modern IRL equivalents.

The suits were likely around before every resource was life or death, aesthetics would be thought of then.  And comfort and aesthetics likely go hand in hand at least partially anyway.  If nothing more, I expect the suits to not outright damage anything.

Even so, I'm sure they'd ration water on the flotilla to take showers every so often.

I disagree. It's very clear that the events of ME1, inbetween ME1 & ME2, and ME2 itself took it's toll on her. She's been sent on goose chases by the council and has seen people die needlessly, including her own father - all in a vain attempt for reclamation of the homeworld.

By all accounts, she had a pretty normal childhood,

Certainly, it's nothing to the magnitude of Jack, but I disagree that it was exceedingly normal. Tali said herself that she was treated differently for being an Admiral's daughter - and the head admiral IIRC. People would either expect great things from her or resent her. In addition, there was never the nuclear family. Her mother was in the background and her father was absent. That's far from a normal childhood.

But she hasn't been through a lot.  By all accounts, she had a pretty normal childhood, then she's been out around the galaxy for around 2 years.  The quarians have been through a lot, and I'd like that reflected somewhere, but Tali's face isn't the right place in my opinion.

I think from a design perspective, it fits perfectly. If you can't look past a few cybernetics and some damaged skin, I have to honestly wonder why you even care to romance Tali. If you want a perfect complexion, try Miranda or Liara. The about Tali is that you have to look past ALL of that. The suit. The mask. Even her face. You have to look past what the quarians have been reduced to, the damage that's been done over the years, and just focus on the smile. And seriously, being in that suit your entire life can NOT be healthy for your skin. Plus, we knows she's at least partly cybernetic. Will it away all you want by saying she's too young to have wrinkles, the fact of the matter is, if she looks like a perfectly toned super model under there, I'm going to be sorely dissapointed in Bioware.

Maybe then, if the suits existed before the Morning War, but right now the Quarians are terribly impoverished. Considering their propensity for reengineering old technology, I can see them stripping the old suits of frivolous functions in order to keep costs down.

Seems likely to me that the suits would be able to take care of all basic cleaning functions.

This is all speculation on shaky grounds though.  We don't know nearly enough about the suits to say anything for sure.  I assume they have been perfected to be comfortable and completely unobstructive to wear, while others think they're like putting on a wetsuit and a motorcycle helmet would be today.  Until we know more, its all just guesses.

Tali has had a tragic life. And she will most likely never be able to leave that suit for the rest of her life (even if they get the homeworld back it will still be decades before she can remove it)

Tali has a "normal" childhood compared to some other characters (Kaidan, Miri, Jack, Liara(she is still considered a child) Shepard(depanding on your background, Thane and Ash)

However I think the person who had the most normal one was.................Grunt LOL

Everyone is screwed up in ME. Growing up trapped in a bubble room and then a suit is not 'normal'.
I'm hardpressed to find any normal characters in the game outside of the bartender.

I agree...
Always imagined Tali's skin looking pale... sickly...

But still has that glow of a smile that makes everything ok.

EXACTLY.

If I was the artist... I'd go for a "destoyed beauty" look... you can tell she's beautiful... cute... sweet... but you can tell how much her situation has worn on her and her people... a few minor cybernetics... veins... a deathly pallor to her skin tone... damaged... but despite it all... there's a warm smile in there...

It would really be great symbolism. I think.

agreed

This is stuff that happened in the last year.  I'm not saying she hasn't had a hard life, but her father dying a week ago isn't going to show on her face.  That stuff shows as you age.  The signs of aging would be a great touch, which is why I would prefer it on someone like Xen.  Someone who has led a full life of the stuff that Tali has only begun to see.

Its hardly extraordinary.  She placed exceedingly high expectations on herself due to her father's position, and likely worked extra hard.  Nothing that millions of people don't do in real life today.  She had a father who didn't express his love, and a mother who died when she was 17, but otherwise we know little about (being "absent" in Tali's words could mean a lot of different things.  Again, not easy, but nothing that would show when she was 24.

I'd like to learn more about his past. There's a goldmine there if Bioware uses the potential properly. There seemed to be an interesting dynamic between Jacob and his father or his father and his mother (IIRC), that isn't explained in-depth but should be.
