I differ to Joker's logic.

I think from a design perspective, it fits perfectly. If you can't look past a few cybernetics and some damaged skin, I have to honestly wonder why you even care to romance Tali. If you want a perfect complexion, try Miranda or Liara. The about Tali is that you have to look past ALL of that. The suit. The mask. Even her face. You have to look past what the quarians have been reduced to, the damage that's been done over the years, and just focus on the smile. And seriously, being in that suit your entire life can NOT be healthy for your skin. Plus, we knows she's at least partly cybernetic. Will it away all you want by saying she's too young to have wrinkles, the fact of the matter is, if she looks like a perfectly toned super model under there, I'm going to be sorely dissapointed in Bioware.

For the record, my opinion of her personal appearance has nothing to do with my argument.  I just don't think it makes sense.  Cybernetics are one thing, scars would make some sense, signs of advanced aging for little real reason, just to make her seem damaged doesn't make sense.

I still maintain that Xen would be the perfect candidate for the aged and emaciated face.  That's where the real hardships and signs of aging would lie, not in a 24 year old.

@Phil, it's not aging so much as stress, sleep deprivation, etc. Both of which I can see being part of Tali's life, at least after the pilgrimage.

I don't really think that Tali had a normal childhood, it's just not as harrowing as say Jack.

I didn't say aging. I said dermal damage due to being locked inside the suit. There is a difference, and you're clearly confusing the two.

besides the virtues and flaws both physical and in personality  are what come together to make a person unique and attractive. What I think is the point though is that the quarians as a whole have a huge weight on them and have endured hardships that would detroy most others, this would be reflected in all of them in one way or another even collectively to some degree.

Why would cybernetics even show on her face? To help her keep her eyes open?

No, the cybernetics would be for waste disposal, nutrition or neural implants to better interface with the suit but would not be visible on her face.

Look at TIM. Clearly cybernetics in the Mass Effect universe are sometimes visible on someone's face.

Subtle signs of stress are one thing, I get the feeling that what is being suggested here is a lot more obvious to the player.  I'm not saying her life/childhood was easy by any stretch, but it wasn't so bad that it would start showing on her face already.  If Jack doesn't have signs after the years of torture and everything else, why should Tali's face show it?  Its as much to do with age as lifestyle.

Game Design logic. It doesn't have to make tons of sense, it just needs to look cool.

Again, glowing eyes MAKE NO SENSE.  For all we know TIM's are just contact lenses with miniature displays on them.

That goes back to suit inconsistencies that I was mentioning earlier.  I would like to see something cybernetic, and a scar would make sense, but more than that just seems unrealistic.  There are plenty of ways to accomplish things the suit needs to do besides willingly destroying the face.

Indeed.

In game design, it's less about function, and more about symbolism and stressing a point. Unless the point IS functionality.

Agreed once again.

I don't think we've ever agreed this much before on anything, Collider.

Interesting.

I agree with you on a lot of things.
