Have to look at evolution again. Why do humans even salivate for the salty and the sugary goods? Most grains like either, and an ancient diet would lean toward grains and non-marinated meats. The body needs salt and sugar, so develops the craving for them, the desire to seek them out. Of course, then we develop into a society where salt and sugar are in abundance, which is they they both cause so much problems health-wise.uhdnrt wrote...
Also begs the question: Would compatible foods likely be either too bland or bitter to dextro based species?

*Tali stirs from her blissful sleep, the exertions of last night leaving her the happiest she has ever felt. A soft hiss is heard as the door to the Cabin opens, Shepard carrying a tray and wearing full armor. Tali sits up on the bed, still without her suit.*
Tali: Shepard?
Shepard: Morning. I... uhh... I made you something.
*Shepard walks around to the side of the bed, setting down the tray to reveal a collection of exotic turian food.*
Shepard: I hope you like it... I had to do a whole lot of research before I found a few things that wouldn't wreak havoc on your digestion. Had to clear out the Mess Hall and disinfect the whole place as well as the elevator. Even cooked wearing my armor.
Tali: Shepard... You really didn't have to do all of... this.
Shepard: I wanted to. I want this to be the best hours of our lives before we hit that Relay. C'mon, try it.
*Tali picks up a spoon, reveling in the feel of the metal utensil on her bare flesh, before gingerly taking a spoonful of a spicy red soup. Her eyes widen at the bitter taste.*
Shepard: Is it good?
*Tali nods slowly, holding the mouthful of soup in her mouth before swallowing it around her tongue.*
Tali: It's... good.

It depends. Turian candy could be very bitter to us, same with our candy to them.
There's something about that which stuck me as oddly humorous.

It depends. Some foods will do nothing at all. Some will make a human sick. If they have a severe enough reaction, they'll go into shock and could die.
I'm really getting tired of being the thread doctor...
Any cites I could get up to speed with?
I would think foods would get broken down by the acid in the stomach.
And I wonder - just what human foods could a Quarian consume?
It's not that they can't be broken down, it how the body reacts to the molecules.

Dextro sugars is a completely different concept from dextro proteins. Trace your left hand on a sheet of paper. Think of the tracing on the paper as your taste bud and your left hand the levo protein. Think of your right hand as the dextro protein. Now place the right hand on the paper. It doesn't fit. The taste bud will not recognize it.uhdnrt wrote...
Possibly. Most of the real wourld dextro freindly materials we would recognize are actually tasted as "sweet" to our tastebuds iirc. So who knows.

Dude, most animals can eat more things then humans.....We're top of the food chain mostly because of our brains not our stomachs.
