You don't have to recruit Wrex or Garrus. However, you have to recruit one of them. Apparently the default game had Shepard recruit Wrex but not Garrus (wtf), but had Wrex die somehow (possibly by Ashley).cannedcream wrote...

Fascinating, considering you don't even have to recruit him in ME1.Collider wrote...
The great thing, and gives me the greatest hope about him returning, is that the canon is pretty much Shepard being pals with Garrus.
Which is weird to me since you have to recruit everyone else I think, so why not Garrus as well?
Still, I like the idea of continuing of my deadly trio of Shep, Tali, and Garrus in part 3.

Course, we all recruited Garrus.
Aren't Tali and Wrex optional too?

Heh. And the game barely even acknowledges Shepards that didn't even recruit him.NuclearBuddha wrote...

Oh, I didn't mean he wouldn't talk to Shep. I meant I don't think he'd be doing a lot of making the rounds and chatting up other folks on the ship.
And yes, I think turians do sweat. Otherwise why does Garrus talk about staying hydrated on Therum? You don't loose THAT much water just by exhalation. Sweating is implied to me.

This is going to sound completely crazy, but would anybody happen to know if turians have tear ducts?
Research.
Of course you don't have to make a character cry to show anguish, or joy.
If Jones is researching for what I think he is... I'm suspecting that they may be tears of pain.
Don't even wanna know. I think I'll sleep better that way. . .

Apparently, the game forces Shepard to be racist in order to not recruit Wrex. S/he mentions something about Wrex being a Krogan and not wanting one on the team.NuclearBuddha wrote...

There's no evidence that turians have nictitating membranes, so it could be that they have tear ducts to keep their eyes moist.
But lots of critters with tear ducts don't cry. I think they do have tear ducts. Still don't know if they cry in sadness or pain.

Well, after she gives the proof to Shepard/Anderson/Udina, similar to Garrus she has pretty much 0 relevance in the main plot in ME1.cannedcream wrote...

The presence of Shepard and the additional personnel presented conflicting data. Shepard had initiated many hostile actions against Cerberus, but appeared to have been transported to the Old Machine via Cerberus craft Normandy SR-2. Organics were known to transfer allegiance, however, this did not correlate with previous data on Shepard. Non-human personnel were also anomalous for Cerberus, the creator in particular.
Shepard’s behavior toward the creator was anomalous as well. His protective action suggested alliance between humans and creators.
“Incorrect assumption: organics do not form unified consensus. Response may be individual.”
“Debate deferred pending further data.”
