Dammit, People. Tali and Thane can be friends without being romantically involved!

From your earlier idea about tea, LV. This also continues my other two ficlets, found here, and here. Thanks for the inspiration.

(in my own fic, both Shepards are promoted, hence Admiral Hannah Shepard)

"Why am I doing this again?" Hannah Shepard tugged at the collar of her dress uniform. Apparently she was far less comfortable wearing it than her son.

"Because you're the only family I have, and Shala is the closest thing to family that Tali has." The younger man was clearly keyed up, pacing slowly and rolling a shoulder every now and again.

With any other couple in the galaxy, this would be a simple affair. Prospective in-laws met each other all the time. Tension was a given, especially if nationality, class, or sometimes species differences were an issue.

That both parents were highly ranked within their respective governments made matters much more complicated.

A woman of Shala'Raan's stature just didn't leave the Migrant Fleet, not without a sizable escort. Such a deviation from the Quarian norm would draw attention, especially if a large number of Quarian ships were to visit Alliance Command on Earth, where Hannah Shepard now lived and worked. On the other side, the Alliance would never allow a flag officer to board an alien ship, even a friendly one, without a security detail. This would draw attention within the close-knit Floatilla that Tali didn't want... she still wasn't sure how her people would respond. It wasn't that unusual for a Quarian to be in a relationship with a member of another race, but she was moderately famous, and Shepard more so.

So the Normandy ended up being the compromise. Now that she was an Alliance ship, the Normandy could host Admiral Shepard without anyone so much as blinking an eye. Conversely, Tali's move to the Normandy made it well known in the Migrant Fleet, and no one questioned Admiral Raan's desire to visit her adoptive niece on her own.

Shepard stopped pacing and took his position next to his mother as he heard the door console being accessed from outside. 'If only I had another place to do this,' he thought, 'meeting in my cabin just seems so casual.' Tali had vetoed the conference room... that was too formal for her tastes. Both the lounges were out of commission - Kasumi and Samara had taken fire on a recent mission and were still recuperating in their respective rooms. Shepard knew that either would move out for an evening, just because he asked, but he felt it would be too selfish to do so.

'Well, the die is cast now,' he mused as the door opened and admitted Tali and her aunt, 'let's just hope Tali smoothed things over.'

Tali, for her part, looked no where near as nervous as he felt. She relished any chance she had to spend time with Shala'Raan, and it was visible in the way she was praising Shepard's cabin as they walked past the fish tanks. Shepard thought he saw Shala's gaze catch his model of a Quarian ship before she descended the stairs to where he and his mother were standing.
Now Tali seemed to tense up. This was it, things would either go right... or they wouldn't.

It was Tali that made the introductions, stammering a bit as she started.

"A-auntie Raan, this is Admiral Hannah Shepard, of the Systems Alliance Military. Ma'am, this is Admiral Shala'Raan vas Tonbay."

Hannah inclined her head slightly as she shook the Quarian's hand. "It is a pleasure, Admiral. May your ship fly true, and your crew sleep peacefully."

Shala tilted her head to the side, curiosity registering behind the the mask. "Your knowledge of Quarian customs is a pleasant surprise, Admiral. You are most gracious."

"I have my son to thank for the education. It's unfortunate, but before Tali, I never had the opportunity to meet a Quarian," Hannah replied as she nodded towards the table. The group moved to sit down, the Quarians on one side, the Humans on the other. Tali and Shepard sat on the inside of the "L" shape, hands touching briefly before they started setting up a complex tea service.

On Tali's side of the table rested an elongated bottle with a burner on the bottom. Shepard didn't quite understand the affair, but it apparently was an all-in-one boiler and carafe. Sectioned sealed by one-way valves enabled up to four people to each partake of the tea through drinking tubes without any cross-contamination. The device had cost Shepard a small fortune to both find and purchase. On Shepard's side was a more conventional teapot and small china set for he and his mother.

As they sat down Shala continued the conversation. "I must confess, I seem to be misinformed. A search of our records indicate that you rescued the crew of a disabled Quarian ship when you were a junior officer, a service, by the way, for which we are still grateful. Didn't you meet any of my people then?"

Hannah laughed. "No, we were so short staffed, I ended up handling the bridge duties all by myself while the little crew I had helped with the onload of the Quarians. There was so much to do in the way of repairs and paperwork when I got back, that I never did meet any of them. The Floatilla had picked them up before I even got out of my supervisor's office."

"That is a shame," Shala replied, "Rael was most grateful. You probably didn't know this, but both Tali and her father were on that ship. Had you not been there, we most likely would not be meeting today."

Shepard grinned. "You know, that was the first time I ever really did get help the crew with something real. I had to sneak off when Mom wasn't looking to help with the rescue, but it was worth it in the end. The Quarian I rescued gave me an episode of that old Paus show, and I ended up being hooked on it for most of my..."

Shepard trailed off as he saw Tali's eyes widen. She raised a hand, "Wait, that..."

"THAT WAS YOU?!" they both said in unison, jaws dropping.

The next two hours were spent with both Tali and Shepard telling their version of the rescue. Neither could believe the coincidence in their meeting so many years ago. Tali teased Shepard for liking a children's show, Shepard responded that at least he had grown out of it, and he knew Tali still hummed the theme song from time to time. Shala had a good laugh when Shepard revealed that Tali named her drone Chiktikka.

Shala and Hannah, originally the focus of this whole meeting, didn't mind fading into the background as they watched the banter between their two children. Small glances and slight nods between the two communicated what discussion never could: an acceptance of what was, even if full understanding might never be achieved between the two of them. From time to time, they chimed in, Hannah telling Tali how religiously Shepard watched that "alien kid's show," and Shala providing images of Tali in her bubble when Shepard complained about his mother's ever-ready baby pictures.

By the time Admiral Raan finally had to return to her ship, everyone was sad to see the evening draw to a close. For people who had long given up the average family life, this brief glance at normalcy was bittersweet, but worthwhile.

Later that night, after returning Shepard's mother to the Alliance cruiser that would ferry her home, Tali lay next to him in bed, gazing at the stars as they drifted past the overhead portal in the captain's cabin.

Shepard's voice was a rumble as his chest vibrated against the side of her helmet. "Well, that was better than expected."

"You owe me, you know," Tali said, poking him sharply with a finger.

"Ow... for what?"

"For not telling your mother that you STILL watch the Adventures of the Paus, even after you gave me a hard time for the same thing."

Silence met her accusation. She knew when Shepard was calculating risks and odds.

He sighed, defeated. "How did you know?"

"Shepard, I'm a Quarian... when will you figure out that you can't hide anything from me. I know everything your omnitool does."

"Oh is that so?" He replied, a playful tone in his voice.

Tali pushed up on an elbow, leaning over him so her narrowed eyes could look him directly in the face.

"Yes, of course it is."

Shepard smiled, "Then you would know I have this..."

Orange light lit up his face as he activated a few keys on his omnitool. An episode of The Adventures of the Paus started to play, projected on the ceiling by the device.

Tali rolled over to watch, snuggling up to Shepard as she settled in. When the title screen flashed by, she gave a little gasp.

"Wait, that episode was lost when one of our mainframes on the Floatilla gave out a few years back. I've been looking for a replacement copy for years... where did you find that?"

"I don't know, some bratty Quarian in a bubble gave it to me years ago-OW!" Shepard replied, a grin on his face until Tali hit him. She snuggled in again, giving him a squeeze as she did so.

"Well, that Quarian must have thought you were something special, to have given you something so important to her."

They both held on tightly as they watched the flickering image.

Someone ship Zaeed and Jessie.  DO IT.

The Diary of Zaeed: The Depths of Human Depravity

Staying alone, deep within the cargo hold of the Normandy can do bad things to a man.  Shepard may come down, but he tends to spend his time in Engineering.  Speaking to the quarian.  Fine.  I can just sit here, compacting trash, cleaning Jesse.

Now that I think of it, today was the first time I ever noticed that Jessie's barrel is... quite a peculiar diameter.  I'm a lonely man.  But am I that lonely?

...Just...No...Brain is now hurting worse.

Zaeed is a man who doesn't need no relationships. All he needs is something to shoot or garbage to shoot out into space.

You are.

What?

Grunt gets with a girl every bit as badass as him, and Jack is free to be as rough with him as she wants and probably won't kill him.

If nothing else, I've always imagined the two being good friends.

No.

Samara would likely attempt to kill Jack.

At most, I could see Samara taking a motherly role with Jack. That's pushing it.
