Actually I remember something similar, too - that there was some reference that AI law had already been in place. Maybe it's a continuity error?

From the AI article in the Wiki:

"Artificial Intelligence is a key concern for the Citadel races, one that pre-dates the emergence of the sentient geth..."

Best example I could find on there.  Hints at laws being around before, though hearing Tali's line again would help.

Hmm...strange. Here's what I found in the codex:

Posted Image
The geth are a humanoid race of networked A.I.s. They were created by the quarians
300 years ago as tools of labor and war. When the geth showed signs of
self-evolution, the quarians attempted to exterminate them. The geth won
the resulting war. This example has led to legal, systematic repression of artificial intelligences in galactic society.

And here I thought Y2K would never be brought up in conversation ever again.

Well, I thought I would never see a conversation about lesbians in this thread again either, so we're even.Posted Image

The difference being I don't have a problem with discussing either.

They obviously were mechanical geniuses even back then. 300 Years ago they built a spacestation the size of the width of the presidium.

May be a continuity error then, unless I'm completely making up the ME1 Tali line in my head.  Though I guess that line could be referring to just a more strict stance being taken.  The wiki did mention something like only 4 corporations having approval to test AI, so maybe it was a lot more pre-Morning War.

After noticing the lovely woman in the foreground, I noticed something out the window...

Is that Bespin's Cloud City?

I imagine they're responsible for a lot of advances in technology, they're probably responsible for the entire cybernetics field now that I think about it.  We just don't have any real proof of anything.

We did have a discussion earlier about fantasy versions of Mass Effect characters, right? Was this inspired by that conversation?
