Shepard is boring.
Considering the fact that his only character development has been in fanfiction, yeah.
Yeah, he is kinda dull. Most of his personality comes from what we read into him. And those parts of ourselves that we project onto him. Just imagine Shepard as you, then he's a bit more developed.
Isn't that kind of the point?
Be that as it may, wouldn't you like to see Tali asking about his past or asking what she means to him?
Some in-game character development would be appreciated at the very least
Agreed. Allow the player (us) to answer some questions about our past. Then you can get Tali's/any character's reaction to it, and you flesh out Shepard. This, also, wouldn't remove the 'this is My Shepard' feeling, as everyone could choose to answer it in a different way.

I would state with almost certainty that the Shepard in the "book" is a ******. I can not imagine him being a very nice person simply because of the way that the aliens in the game act through the dialog choices. You can make them cry, appologize or cry and appologize. Seriously if you play nice long enough then they will "give it up" for you. 5 bucks says he is a complete ****hole.

Ah, I gotcha... the whole reason I don't play much Elder Scrolls anymore. I don't know, there's a balance between making the character exist on his own and taking creative control out of the hands of the player... If Shepard is as developed as the NPCs, then he's not really MY character, which defeates the purpose of an RPG. But, if EVERYTHING about the character is left blank for the player to fill in, then you're right, the game has no way to react to it. I think Mass Effect strikes a nice balance between the two.

I agree. Instead of having to roleplay in a way that isn't even recognized by the game, we should be able to flesh out our protagonists within the game itself. I liked the amount of the choices you had in KOTOR II. As I said earlier I was almost overwhelmed by the amount of ways we could have our character interpret what happened on Telos and the Mandalorian Wars. You could be callous. You could be violent. You could say it was a necessary evil. You could say the Jedi were cowards. If people want blank slates, they have other venues to roleplay in. But in games, you're always going to have a framework. If you must have a framework, at least make the framework good.
So, why was the KOTOR II PC so good? In part, because we were asked questions. I remember very specifically, talking to Bao-dur, and I hear the soft spoken words "So why did you decide to fight?"
In Mass Effect, we're always asking the questions. Apparently no one gives a **** about Shepard's feelings.

I was always convinced that there was going to be an underground extranet-based movement in support of Shepard and his warnings.
I just wanted to suggest that they might use his name as inspiration for their's.

Indeed.
Dragon Age did it extraordinarily well with the conversations the Warden has with Wynne.
Seeing that same approach applied here would be outstanding.

Game immersion is the downside. The path that Bioware chose to go appeals to people that want to role play as their Shep, and get extremely immersed in the game. I've seen some incredibly thought out and detailed Shep backstories on here before, and bringing that stuff up in game limits some people's immersion. Bioware seems to have made their choice on what direction they want to go, I see it as a nice change up personally.

Well, actually I am to rip out people's hearts and show it to them, but if I keep pumping out tragic fiction, than everyone's going to build up an immunity. And we can't have that. . .
Truth and with Riptide/Lividity cranking out Reckoning all this tragedy will simply cause us to stop carring about the universe and the reapers will win. So with this newfound truth you must control your inner(or outer) demons so that reapers will be defeated and we can all live miserably ever after with endless soul ripping FF's. =)

I'm actually writing this for a little scene when garrus finds it recognises that shepard wrote it, confronts him rather jokingly as he waves it off eventually culmenating in him telling garrus that the manifesto was meant to provide the base for an idea and that it would be up to others to act on it.Lividity Jones wrote...

Definitely agreed. I got the impression from ME1 that Mark Meer/Jennifer Hale were just asked to voice "What can you tell me about...." and then a bunch of random words, which were stuck on the end of that sentence a hundred times over the course of the game.
