No more incidental dialogue/party banter since update? Alistair changed?

Bit of a weird issue here, hadn't played Dragon Age in a while - got Leliana's song when it came out and played through that, but not the main game.  I don't have Awakenings, Darkspawn Chronicles or Return to Ostagar.
Fired it up today and it needed to update, and as I played through I noticed something odd - all the party banter has gone! None, no matter what characters I run around with, or where I run around (and there were a couple of definite 'trigger points' for dialogue I had spotted)
I can still hear background dialogue - stall owners yelling etc, and conversations are fine, but nobody in the party talks to each other any more :(
Also, I may have gone mad, but has Alistair changed?.... I'd swear he looks different now, darker hair, more clean shaven and smoothed off. He looks less cheeky and has lost a lot of his character tbh. But maybe I'm hallucinating since I hadn't played the game in a while.

I had party banter all through Leliana's song, so I don't think that caused the issue. Todays update seems the more likely culprit.
Is there anything I can do about this? I wouldn't have thought it'd be such a big deal, but it's rather immersion-spoiling and takes a surprising amount of fun out of the game - the dialogue may have been my favourit thing in DA:O, it seems really quiet and lifeless to explore now.

update: I finished playing the game for the night, so I've tried the good old cache-clearing. Will reapply update next time I play and see if this helps. Still curious to know of anyone else experienced this.
