Last Darkness, each point of defense increases your chance to dodge by 1%. The reason 100 defense isn't 100% dodge is because defense is compared to attack as follows: attack + 54 - defense = chance to hit. So if I have an attack of 100 and you have a defense of 100, that gives me a 54% chance to hit you. If you lose 18 defense, now I have a 72% chance to hit you.
In practice, it doesn't work out quite like that because % dodge items are calculated first, but that's the basic idea.
Edit: I'll add that it's nonsense to argue that trading 18 dexterity for the ability to wear heavy armor is a bad trade. If that were true, wouln't sword and board warriors wear light armor, wield a dagger, and just pump dexterity? It shouldn't take math to show anyone that raising strength high enough to wear heavier armor is worth it if you're going for mitigation. It *can* be argued that you're sacrificing other things, but saying that 18 defense is more valuable than heavy armor is just rubbish.
If any newer players were wondering about the math, armor is more valuable than defense, point for point. If we assume an "average" hit deals 30 damage, each additional point of armor mitigates 3% of that. Each additional point of defense only mitigates 1% (on average, via chance to evade attacks). Of course, the value of armor varies based on how hard enemies are hitting, but overall it's very valuable as a damage mitigation stat.
