DISCLAIMER: I know this is bad timing considering the other threads that have popped up in the last couple of days involving this topic. I apologize. This is by no means an attempt to troll. I just wanted to see if I could start a discussion while the thought was still fresh in my head.
Why exactly did Bioware feel like they had to kill Shepard? IMO, there could have been much better ways to take Shepard away from his original crew and make him somewhat irrelevant within the galaxy. In addition (I know I'm 6 months late with this), I didn't feel like his old crew was as surprised to see Shepard as they should have been. I know in some instances like with Ash/Kaidan they had already caught wind from rumors and such, but I think it would have made the experience much better if they were just in complete shock when Shepard came around the corner. I just did not feel that in this game.
I did enjoy this game, BTW. One of my favorite games ever.

Duno...
I guess is like saying, why not have had Gears of War 2 where the coalition lost the war.
Different views, most likely sat around of what a good sequel is, and in the end decided dramatic kill and dramatic reentrance would keep things going.
Still....why they had to kill it?...fun?exciting? refresh new start?... had a bad hair day?

Ok, I know we're not supposed to talk about this but you seem like a good guy so I think you should know.
Shepard never really died. Jabba the Hutt had a bounty on his head for dumping a load of spice when he was boarded by an Imperial cruiser. The whole Normandy destruction was really an act to convince everyone of his death. Shepard was really picked up in orbit and has spent the last two years in a witness protection program in exchange for his testimony against Jabba.
