Hi Everyone I'm looking for some input here. I've always been a console gamer but I recently vamped up my computer so it can play larger games now, I was thinking of getting Never winter knights 2 but I was wondering if it's still good without playing the first one. Or perhaps you might recommend the first one.

If anyone has any other suggestions for a great RPG that isn't available on consoles that would be great. New or old. I feel like it's opened up a whole new gaming world now and would love to hear from other PC gamers about whats out there.

Thanks very much. Posted Image

Playing NWN2 without ever playing NWN1 should be fine. But do consider yourself warned that the game has a VERY complex ruleset. All these races, classes, feats, skills and spells can be overwhelming and intimidating at first.
I do strongly advise you to try though. NWN2 Wiki has a ton of usefull info. And there is also the very cool character building site.

If old games and aged graphics do not disgust you, in my opinion the best cRPGs ever include:
1. Planescape: Torment
2. Fallout 1 & 2

Try them... if you dare.

The ruleset may be complex but, if you do something wrong, it is unlikely to have too big an effect. So I would say don't worry so much about the ruleset.

If you have played D&D before, you are fine. If not, the things to remember are to try and make your AC (Armor class) as high as possible. If you are playing a fighter class, try to make your to hit bonuses as high as possible.

If you just take the "recommended" options, the default selected will make a perfectly respectable character for single player so you don't have to worry overly about complexity. If you've played any other RPG games, the same character archetypes are there. The story of NWN2 doesn't really tie to NWN1 in any meaningful way other than being in some of the same areas.

I played NWN2 without playing NWN1, its great. and the graphics are still good (passable) by todays standards.

NWN2 OC has a great story. I'm sure you'll like it.

Most recent games are out for both Console & PC but there are a couple of PC exclusive RPG titles that are very good,

- NWN2+Mask of the Betrayer
- The Witcher

However, you may have to go back to more old-school RPGs, because they weren't ported to consoles,

- Baldur's Gate 1
- Baldur's Gate 2+Throne of Bhaal
- Fallout 1
- Fallout 2

Beware however, that these games have very dated graphics, very little voiceover and their mechanics are dated by modern stnadards.

Thanks very much for the help guys. I think I'm going to give NWN2 a try first then grab the Baldurs gate games because I've played one of those on the xbox years ago and really enjoyed it, I doubt it's anything like the pc games but old grafics don't bother me if the story is good. Also it'll be nice to finally get all the refrences that pop up in mass effect 2 and DA:O. :)

I'm a bit late to give advice, but I would suggest trying NWN1 first. This is just my opinion, but NWN1 is a much better game than NWN2.

And beyond that I would even say that NWN1 isn't as good as the Baldur's Gate titles... but as stated above it has VERY dated graphics and the mechanics are kinda complex.

NWN1 and NWN2 have completely independent story lines and very different interfaces. So there's no benefit to playing NWN1 first.

And if you're not a D&D gamer, just read the manual! Everything you need to know about building a character and navigating the menus is there. :)

for non-D&D players like me, I remember when I first started NWN2 it took me awhile to know  (thanks to the people in this community)

that 1d8 = roll one dice 8, so its 1-8 damage

and 2d6 = roll two dices for a total 0f 2-12 damage.

as well as having 2 rings of protection +2 does not = +4 additional armor.

If you've played BG on the Xbox it was probably Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, which has a completely independant storyline. The original Baldur's Gate has somewhat more complex rules and things, and it's also a lot bigger and involving. Generally console games cannot afford to be quite so complicated.

However, don't let that put you off. Some people like to squeeze every little bit out of the rules to get the toughest and most powerful characters possible but you really don't need to do that to get through the game.

By the way, here's a hidden gem I stumbled across accidentally when viewing YouTube videos. I liked the look of a game and headed across to Gamespot for a peek at the review. They gave the game a rotten 6.5. However, when reading the player reviews they all raved about the game. I headed across to Amazon.co.uk and read the player reviews there. Again all rave reviews. So I purchased it for a measly £4.99. There are lots of mods for the game and you can also play it in multiplayer.
The game is called Mount & Blade, and was made by a husband and wife team. With so much emphasis being placed on georgeous drop dead graphics and little gameplay nowadays this game is a refreshing change and enjoyable. Okay, so you may tire of it after a while maybe, but for £4.99 you won't be breaking the bank at Monte Carlo for having purchased it.
Here's a video of the hidden gem:

You can have up to 1,000 knights on your side with a mod:

If you're REALLY into RPGs you should get ALL of them: ;)

Baldur's Gate Compilation (4 in 1: BG1, Tales of the Sword Coast Expansion, BG2 and Thron of Baal Expansion)
Icewind Dale: The Ultimate Collection (3 in 1: IWD1, Heart of Winter Expansion, IWD2)
Planescape: Torment
Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition (3 in 1: NWN, Shadows of Undrentide Expansion, Hordes of the Underdark Expansion; possibly even including two Premium modules: Kingmaker & Witches Wake)
Neverwinter Nights 2 Gold (2 in 1: NWN2, Mask of the Betrayer Expansion) AND Storm of Zehir Expansion
OR if you live in Europe Neverwinter Nights 2 Deluxe Edition (3 in 1: NWN2, MotB, SoZ)
and perhaps the Mysteries of Westgate expansion (online purchase only though)

As for the best story, as others have already pointed out, that's most probably Planescape: Torment but be aware that it's very different from a console game and requires lots of reading. BG2 has also a great story. And NWN2 seems nice, too, although I haven't played through it yet. Keep in mind that NWN and NWN2 are more than the official single player content, if you own them (and preferably teh expansions, too) you can also choose from a large collection of community created stories, a lot of them even better than the official content, all free for download. And you can play on online worlds with old or new friends without having to pay a fee.

All of the games mentioned above are based on the D&D rulesets but on different versions of them. If you're looking for other and mostly older (Action-)RPGs on the PC, you could also check out some of these:

Diablo 2
Throne of Darkness
Titan Quest
Nox
Revenant
Arcanum
Rage of Mages 1&2 (part strategy games but which CRPGs aren't...)

I guess you don't want to go back to 80s and 90s classics like Ultima, Dungeon Master, SSI Gold Box Games, Eye of the Beholder, Realms of Arkania etc.?
Well, they're probably not sold anymore anyway...

Okay, maybe you should just check out NWN & NWN2 first.

wow Thanks for the suggestions guys, I've written them all down and will eventually work my way through them.

the D&D rules don't worry me too much I played it once with my husband cos he loved D&D when he was younger so I'm sure he could help me out with any rules that get confusing.

I'll keep checking back if anyone had any other input.

I wouldn't count on your husband's help too much, D&D rules have changed alot over the years. Version 3.5 rules are probably quite different than what he was playing when he was younger. It depends of course on how far back you're talking about.
