Maybe people's hesitation about the graphics is based off the fact that maybe the lighting engine isn't complete (providing of course, it isn't). If you look at the ss' the light source looks pretty 'harsh' (as in, the lighting on the models seems to be pretty constant, it's not toned as much as Dragon Age: Origins for example)

Art assets might change (for example, the Darkspawn seem to have excellent dental hygiene) but what makes their art design 'bad'? Is it just because it isn't as bloody as it was in the first one? Is it because of the spikes?

I think people have been complaining that it looks too cartoonish. I personally dont have any problem with it.

People are under the illusion that DA:O was a dark fantasy, and they think that a dark fantasy should have realistic graphics.

Seeing as DA:O was anything but dark fantasy, the change in the artstyle doesn't really bother me.

Neither the graphics nor the art style, from what I've seen from the screenshots, bother me. They're fine IMHO.

The darkspawn armor could be of a lighter color, tho' (tan? to match w/ the overall color of their skin tone and the surroundings? kinda like camouflage?)

@behindyounow

And yes, dark fantasy doesn't need to look realistic. It's the overall feel/theme that makes it dark fantasy, anyway.

And dark fantasy can be set in a bright land (as opposed to dark, oppressive environments such as built up cities or dungeons): think AD&D's Dark Sun.

That said, I really hope they improve the 'atmosphere' (take a cue from The Witcher, please...if there's anything they can emulate from that game, it's atmosphere) of the game.

What do you mean by the 'atmosphere,' I have played the Witcher but to me what made the Witcher so incredible was just how grey the world was. You had a King who was a devoted husband and father, it's just that his wife was his sister and his daughter a product of their incestuous union.

Maybe I'm proving my ignorance here, but I thought DA:O was a dark fantasy; it had horror elements (in the sense of the nature of darkspawn) threatening the entirety of Ferelden (not quite the entire human species, but Ferelden seems to be enough, it was our entire world afterall).

We were discussing visuals, so I meant that.
Example: if you go into a crypt that's barely used: it's dark. It's not lined w/ lit torches. You'd have to either supply your own light source or use a potion to get night vision. Same goes w/ the Sewer. Compare this w/ the Deep Roads and it's Caverns (quite bright...and your party has never really had to worry about procuring/producing a light source, I think).
The look of the interiors, such as the castles (the Caer Morhen and the one in the city), were also quite good, IMHO.
Helps w/ immersion.

As for the 'moral grayness': yeah, that too was great.

dang. I really need to re-install and play it again...maybe after my current DA:O playthrough (and after I re-finish ME1 & 2, and...ok. Maybe after a while. Having a gaming backlog is 'sad'  )

But looking at some of the concept art for DA:O the style in the painting drawings doesn't linger away too much. I'm looking at the concept art for Zevran and it kinda looks like the style of DA:2...Or is it just me?

it does look "more cartoonish" then DA:O...but is it "too much"? well...I dunno.

MY problem is with the new armor and darkspawn designs....the darkspawn look idiotic with bright pale skin....they can't even ****ing be consistant with their own creatures.

and the pointy armor looks absolutely idiotic. It's obvious someone still has a hard-on for MDK's style and this is how they found a way to bring it back. That idiotic look fit in an alien sci-fi setting (though I'd argue I wasn't a fan of it much then either) however it is totally out of place and makes DA2 look dated.

does that mean I won't purchase DA2? well that remains to be seen but it wouldn't be because of the idiotic armor designs. I bought DA:O without a ton of knowledge about it other then the basics (didn't want to ruin it.) However in DA2's case, I'm going to have to keep an eye on things and see how it pans out before I commit to it. Which is sad because it'll be the first BioWare game since Baldur's Gate I that I have hesitated on getting. Due in no small part to the direction EA has shoved the guys at BioWare. Sad to see.

Well if the game ends up looking better than the first game, then I am ready to eat Posted Image

But I don't hope it looks better in a cartoony way

I quite like the new art direction.

Its no secret DAO wasnt the best looking game, tho it also wasnt a bad looking game. And while i also think the new darkspawns skin is too light, i dont mind the spiky armor.

I do have to say the new ogre has a "dumb" expression and again, skin is too light so it doesnt look all that frightening.

The ogre in DAO looked like a frightening creature due to its darker skin and menacing expression. the new one is nowhere near that from the few screenshots weve seen.

Personally i think for me it will all come down to the animations in combat. Whereas DAOs animations were IMO hunchbacked, slow and cumbersome, i hope the new graphics will help DA2 animations in combat to be much more fluid and instant actions.

I don't mind more cartoonish, Team Fortress 2 was more cartoonish and a
drastic departure from the previous style, it's arguably the best looking
FPS on the market. This game... just looks, bad.

I agree with Suron, the armor for the darkspawn is stupid looking, they are stupid looking, less monsters than men with skin conditions. perhaps they are angry at the world for that... anyways, the armor on hawke looks better more realistic. I know that this is a video game and especially the fantasy genre...but for me I like the armor to look like it might have actually existed during antiquity/medieval/renaissance periods. I had problems with the pink/slightly purpel chainmail, curiass and the HUGE pauldrons/spaulders of DA:O. I am still reserving my judgement of the game overall for the next few months, but right now the new assasins creed and the Witcher 2 plus ME3 sound more appealing to me.

Plus the weapons were very realistic, very little of the crappy impossable to use desings for swords or maces that are sometimes found in RPG's.

Cheers,

I wonder if the models have less polygon counts as well to better enable the option of having more bad guys on screen? The textures are just as (probably if not more) rich than what they were in the first one at least.
