A few months ago there was a 7 page discussion on the possibility of rediscovering the allegedly extinct griffons referenced in DA:O sometime in the future.

I personally think it would be pretty
nifty to BioWare to use griffons at least in cut scenes of your party
traveling in DA2.

Does anyone think that we will see griffons in DA2? If so, in what form?

nope they are extinct, although you may find a skeleton of one in a Fereldon museum.

They are not introducing horses (and I am glad of this) because they don't wanna waste their resources for such a dispensable element into the game, keeping them for other elements which they consider more important.
Therefore you have definitely no chances to have griffons, exactly like any other mount...

No. They are extinct for a reason. Keep them that way.

Well maybe they're keeping one in the Anderfels? But we won't get to travel there (I think).

We know that they're supposed to be extinct, but who really knows? Just because we are told that they died out does not mean that they all actually died, or that we won't rediscover them at some later point. They're not just mentioned in some lone note or line of quest dialogue, I feel like the griffons are referenced on practically every fifth loading screen.

Why would BioWare feature them so prevalently in the lore if they had absolutely no plans of ever including them in DA?

Yeah. A Griffon would be nice, but maybe further down the road (DA3...along w/ the Warden? :P )

Extinct

Adjective

extinct (comparative more
extinct
, superlative most extinct)

1. (dated) Extinguished, no
longer alight (of fire, candles etc.)
Poor Edward's cigarillo was
already extinct.

2.No longer used; obsolete,
discontinued.
Luckily, such ideas about race
are extinct in current sociological theory.

3.No longer in existence;
having died out.

The Griffons in Thedas have been extict for hundreds of years.

4.(volcanology) No longer
actively erupting.

EDIT: Curse you spazzy post formatting!

It may say they're extinct, but the entries in the codex aren't canonical, they're merely the views of the authors. It's still possible for griffons to return if Bioware wishes it, if Thedas is anything like the real world in medieval times then large parts of it are still unexplored.

After all, there are animals on Earth that were long believed to be extinct, like the coelacanth.

Please, as if no writing has ever brought something supposedly gone. I could come up with 25 reasons griffins were thought extinct, but weren't and 25 more ways to bring them back from extinction.

I'd love to see them. Doubt I will, but it be cool. It could even be a quest to find the griffin, griffin egg, griffin circus, griffin time portal, griffin alchemal experieent, frozen griffin, hidden griffin colony in the mountains, the lost warden griffin herder- don't make me continue.

Viva dead griffins!

oooo, griffin zombies

people could be wrong about how all the griffins are dead. so if their are some still alive then why not and find them in the world and use them. also in DA:O I listen Wayne talk about griffon's by then I always wanted one but alas couldn't find one.

Viva dead griffins!

p.s this is the story by Wayne:

All this time I thought it meant just kept in captivity to be viewed by only paying customers. No wonder I couldn't find any dodos in zoos...

Exactly my point. I'm sure you could find a few books that say it is impossible to travel faster than sound, that people from Ireland are born inferior to the "real" white races of Europe or that the oceans around the Equator will literally boil any ship that enters them. Being in a book (codex) does not necessarily make something true.

I think if BW gave us griffons, they'd also have to enable us to ride on them, and if we can ride on them, they'd have to enable us to fight while riding on them. If BW hasn't managed to provide us with horses yet, I suspect griffons are too much to ask for.

A lot of stories do the entire "Extinct species come back, saves the day" story.

I'd only enjoy the return of Griffins if only they were made extinct immediately after.
