Which one tends to last longer generally? More damage absorption, or longer duration?

Why don't you read in-game description?
Heavy - absorbs more damage
Improved - lasts longer
Heavy - absorbs more damage
Improved - lasts longer

When your barrier is destroyed then the power is over (even if it is before the 60 or 180 second mark).... you have to hit it again.

So the heavy practically lasts longer. When I have a barrier as a bonus skill I play aggressive, so it doesn't even last 60 seconds. The improved variant seems like a waste of skill points to me.

Those are two different ways of lasting longer. What I'm asking is what lasts longer overall in combat. Is the absorption already enough to go for more barrier time, or does Barrier need to have the ability to take even more damage to last longer?

Vanguard barrier perspective:
I use barrier in 3 specific situations where how long it lasts (read longer duration) is irrelevant.
1) As I am out of cover almost all of the time with my vanguard, I use it when I snipe enemies I can't charge (pretorians, gunships, unreachable enemies with charge)
2) Boost my barrier strength to almost the double ammount before a tough charge (charging 2 YMIR Mechs for instance)
3) When stunned, can't charge/medigel and about to die/take health damage
Duration does nothing, the extra percentage, however, helps.

Heavy Barrier absorbs more damage before going down. If your Barrier doesn't go down fighting - you're in cover all the time, so you don't need Barrier or you should raise the difficulty level. Improved Barrier is like Ralnith said ...

... a wast of skill points. It's Heavy Barrier or no Barrier al together for me.

I actually like the Improved Version on my adept - I prefer having it last long enough for an entire average battle. Taking cover to let my shields recharge is less of a downtine, in terms of time that I spend _not_ using other powers, than the ~9 seconds of cooldown it applies to recast. I throw a lot of glowy blue space-magic around, though, so the cooldown is very important to me - the inability to use powers makes a big dent in my DPS - big enough to be larger, in my entirely subjective expereience, than the ability tog et off a few extra shots from my weapon because of extra shields.
For most classes, though, I would vote heavy barrier, or for one of these shot-gun wielding adepts I keep seeing threads for, I would recommend Heavy Barrier no question. Its just because my playstyle tends to be more tactical, and long range, and casting-heavy that I like the extra duration.
EDIT: For a lot of classes, really, I think I would tend to recommend Geth Shield Boost over either option - +15% weapon damage would be hard to pass up on a soldier, for instance.
In any case, you can reset your bonus talent fairly cheaply with Advanced Training research, so why not try both and find out for yourself, if you're having doubts?

Yah, Heavy Barrier for my Commando Adept all the way. Ultimately, Barrier is a power that is designed to save your ass in tight situations, and allows you to advance to superior positions without having to worry about gunfire. It's not really a power you keep up all the time.
Ultimately, you're raising a Barrier to prevent taking damage. Heavy allows you to take more damage than improved. Not really much more to it than that.

Any shield last until its designated time is over.
Although before even the time is up, the "graphics" certainly go away, if you check the stats they are still there.
The only one that goes when the shields go, is the tech armor.
Also if you.... "mod" a game to put 2 barriers, or if your Sentinel has another shield like barrier or GSB, the extra shield without "graphics" or what I call the one underneath the visible shield goes away when the shield goes down.
EXP: If you have GSB and barrier, GSB will show, barrier will not, while you will have the bonus of both, when your shields break, barrier breaks too, GSB will continue nevertheless.
Heavy would be most useful, since firefights dont last anywhere near 3 minutes, and most badies go down in the first 60 secs, so after heavy barriers expires you should not need it.
Only reason I think for improved is longer duration allows you to use other powers without concerning yourself for the 60 sec mark, but like stated before, by the 60 second you should have already dispatched most dangerous foes.
So no real use for improved barrier.

Eh, how much damage your barrier takes depends on your difficulty level.
On insanity, it's heavy barrier. No question.
On hardcore, I'd still say heavy barrier, though it probably depends on how aggressive you play.
