Hey all.
I recently bought ME1 on steam really cheap, and I've tried to install it (Twice even), but when I click the play button, it asks if I want to play Mass Effect or View Support Information. But when I click play, the little icon next to the mouse the indicates it's working appears, but then the icon disapears, and nothing more happens.
I'm running on Windows 7. And my computer meets the requirements by far.

Post your system specs, whether they meet the requirements or not.

Okay, I tried to go into C:\\\\Program Files (x86)\\\\Steam\\\\steamapps\\\\common\\\\mass effect and I ran the MassEffectLauncher as administrator. Got the launcher, clicked play. and nothing happened....

Have you verified the integrity of the game cache?

Are you running Threatfire antivirus or PC Tools Antivirus (pretty much anything by PC Tools)?

It will silently kill most Steam games with zero warnings in Windows 7. It took me like 4 months to figure that out since there were no warnings or popups.

For DavidSS: Try verifying the game cache. Go to your Steam library, right click Mass Effect to make a shortcut menu appear, and select "Properties". In the window that appears select the "Local Files" tab, then select "Verify Integrity of Game Cache".

I'm not sure what to do if verifying the game cache doesn't work. Do you have problems with any other Steam game, or is it just Mass Effect

Well for the time being I only have 2 games installed on steam (ME1 and DoW2) but DoW2 runs fine. What is supposed to happen when I click on Verify Integrity of Game Cache. Nothing at all happens. It doesn't even close the porperties window. :/

I am running Free Avast, if it is any help. I have made a firewall exception.

A window titled "Verifying Steam files" should pop up when you click Verify Integrity of Game Cache, with a progress bar called "Validating Mass Effect file."

I have Windows 7, Avast free antivirus, and the Steam version of Mass Effect 1, and it works fine for me. I don't think any of those things together are the problem.

Is it Windows 64-bit?

Yes, Home Premium edition.

If it still doesn't work, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling the game through Steam. I think you do that by right-clicking the game in the Steam library and selecting "Delete local content". I'm not 100 percent sure how that would work though, as I'm in no rush to uninstall the game myself.

I have already done that, and I am atm doing it If I open the game from C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\mass effect the launcher works just fine. It even lets me change video settings! But if I click play, nothing happens :(

Thank you for contacting EA customer support.

Hmm, I'm sure that AVG and Avast probably don't do the same thing as Threatfire, but humor me anyways?

Completely disable your antivirus (not "temporarily pause protection" I mean, completely shut it off, kill it's process(es), even prevent it from running on system startup if you have to), then launch steam (after, not before; with Threatfire at least, it does make a difference if you kill the process before or after starting Steam) and try to start Mass Effect.

Both AVG and Avast are listed along with Threatfire and a few others as antivirus programs that have been known to mess with Steam according to that Steam knowledge base article I linked.

Try running the MassEffectLauncher.exe or MassEffect.exe (in the Binaries folder) without Steam running. Yes, it will work, that's how I play.

I will try that, but without an antivirus, my computer is gonna be filled with virus in around 20 seconds :(

Oh my god thank you! It worked! :'D Can't wait to play it! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

For those who have a similar problem, it starts up steam anyway, but this just works :)

Haha, i got mine to work too but not in that way. I tried that but was still failing.

But MightyBob's advice seems to have done the trick!

I switched off AVG, restarted, then ran Steam as Administrator, and ran ME through Steam and it worked!

Kind of an annoying process if i have to go through it every time, but hey it beats not being able to play at all - in fact i just played 12 hours straight... o dear, bedtime.

Thanks everyone.

You can always disconnect your ethernet cable from your computer and run Steam in offline mode and then start Mass Effect (aka, you can't get a virus from the Internet if you're physically disconnected from it).
