Here's a question that's being bugging me. Since Hawke is either a peasant or barbarian, he probably didn't had the the time to learn the art of alphabet and its use. Considering that-will we have a Codex if Hawke is a analphabet?

You could have a written codex as a Dwarf/Elf Commoner in DA:O.  I don't really see how it will be much different in DA2.

Do we actually know anything about literacy rates in Ferelden?

And you are certain of this, how? We don't know if Hawke is actually from Lothering.

We don't know if Hawke is a peasant or otherwise. I think it more likely that he comes from a humble origin but we don't know that for sure (I think the whole "rise to power" thing would be more interesting if you can follow your progress all the way up).

I'm willing to bet that Hawke can read, as most of the characters that Bioware makes can (that I'm aware of). Dalish elves probably have their own system of writing but a dalish character can still read.

Hmmm, well, even though this is a "Medieval Age" setting, I think there are a couple exceptions that BioWare has to make when it comes to Dragon Age even if it doesn't fit the setting at all. For example, a peasent during the old times wouldn't even have a last name. But in this case, BioWare needs to give their character a name, I guess, so people would actually start referring to him directly since apparently he's going to be this very famous guy in Thedas from what I can gather.

"My lord, the ruler of Ferelden has sent you a message."

Read it loud for me, messenger.

"I can't sir, I cannot read."

What kind of messenger cannot read?

"Please sir, just grab the message and read it immediately! It is of utmost importance!"

I refuse, give it to my sister and make her read it out for me.

"But sir, the letter concerns your sister!"

Oh?

"Just read the damned letter!"

Well.. *cough* I can't read.. *cough*

"What was that?"

I.. can't read.

"The Champion of Kirkwall cannot read?"

Yes...

"Wait till the rest of the guys hear this!"

You shall not tell them! Come back, you fool!

Depends on which old times you're talking about. IIRC the Romans had family names even for the lower classes. Of course, they needed them since they didn't have too many first names.

True. I don't think the series is strictly mediaval age. If it was, I might lose some interest in it. Besides, fantasy settings have their own exceptions I guess.

Isn't hating on Hawke because he's a "peasant" just a little anachronistic? Maybe classism is more timeless than I would like to think.

That's the best way to handle this sort of thread.

I suggest a literacy skill. With each level Hawke will be able to decypher additional letters in the alphabet. Upon maximum level you will finally be able to read whole Codex entries(which before were only showing the letters Hawke knew).

He might not be a peasant. he could be a Chasind, or a merchant, or a free holder, a even another royal b*st*rd, or a knight of Highever. He could be any human from any class. We only know that he fled Lothering after it fell and ended up in Kirkwall.

Actually, this is a pretty smart idea. I like it.

Y Haro Thar Kordaris! The peasant thing again, I see.

This reminds me of a fun P'n'P session where I was the DM, and the players found a letter crucial for the plot to advance but none of the characters could read. :D

I'm not going to sink four bloody skill points into decyphering the Codex!

Hawke can read and write. Thus I spake. And even if he couldn't, I can. Metagaming, problem solved.

I concur. There is zero reason for a casteless dwarf to be able to read, but there you have it.

decyphering is an exclusive skill for the new DA2 class: the shaperate library owner.
