Just purchased Mass Effect 1 yesterday from a friends reco...DL'd the digital version from eb games and install went fine.  When I go to actually start the game at the "press any key" screen the stutter is horrible.  The screen will barely move and I have to force a ctrl alt del in order to kill the program.  Here are a couple things I have tried.

Started in windowed mode with firefox running in the front of it.  I can see the start up screen moving beautifully in the background but when i swith to bring ME to the front it stalls and stutters and the original problem persists.

I have tried playing in every resolution possible and same issue always occurs at start up menu

I have tried disabling my HD realtek sound from device manager and same stutter issue at start menu persists

Not sure what else to do.  I do run with a GeFOrce 8800 GTX and I have researched extensively about the problems with ME 1 and the 8 series card but to no available fix.

Here are my specs btw...

All of the earliest 8800s are in the same boat as the rest of their generation.  Defects in firmware that are correctable in software, with the right drivers, but not all of those end up working correctly, so you have to keep trying different ones.  The later 8800s are much less of a problem, but I'm not enough of a model number memorizer to remember which one is the right one, and which one is not.

Just keep uninstalling / reinstalling a different driver -- it may take several.  My own 8800 is just a GT, not a GTX, and I went all the way back to the CD that came with it from BFG (I'm pretty sure that's where I got the CD that I used).
