What changes are in store for Dwarves/Elves in DA2?

“Art wanted to create more space between the races so we changed the way
the qunari looked,” says senior artist Matt Goldman. “We have also
changed the way elves and dwarves look for that matter, but qunari seem
the most dramatic because you only ever saw Sten in Dragon Age:
Origins.”

Special thanks to Saibh for finding the article.  Quanari discussion here.

So no pics yet on the new elves and dwarves, very little info but we do know the art direction has changed.

The changes in elven appearance may really bring out the visual theme of (city) elf poverty.  *crosses fingers*  Couldn't get the whole poverty stricken life from the elves because the women naturally LOOK TOO GOOD. The stereotypical thin elven chick model with some messed up hair and shabby clothing just doesn't impart the same message of oppression as seeing a putrid (f)ugly sod suffering.

Longer Dwarf beards maybe?

I changed the title to more suit the topic. When we actually recieve news from GI about the new look, then we can use that title, until then this thread is PURE speculation. Thanks for understanding

Judging from this: http://www.gamestar.....cfm?pk=2119687

Dwarves haven't changed much.

I don't think the changes will be massive. I hope that the elves look more alien, and less like humans. I don't mean multiple limbs or anything, but I guess...otherworldly...is what I'm looking for. But, again, not over-the-top. I hated how scrawny they looked. I don't mind elves lithe (that's usually how I picture them), but I didn't think they looked right in DA:O.

Likely they are just changing the models/skeletons a bit, it's not going to be as much as the qunari. Maybe change the eyes?

The Reaction in regards to the expansion on what we know visually about the Qunari has been...mixed, at best. Though I enjoy the new intense Art direction, and trust in BioWare to reveal something amazing in the new Dwarven and Elven look, I am really interested to see whether or not they will choose to retain *some* element of the DAO Dwarves/Elfs, or if they will only appear different because we are entering a new region of Thedas.

We've heard mention that the Dwarves of Kal Sharok became more...violent and savage in nature in order to survive being cut off from Orzammar and the other Thaigs, so perhaps any Dwarves we encounter will have come from that stock.

As for the Elfs, well, given the proximity to Arlathan we may see Elfs who are more...pure bood, I suppose is the right term. We know contact with Humans changed the Elfs, made them age and so on (though there's obviously more to that story then what we've been told) still, if so it would serve as the reason why Elfs decended from older bloodlines would appear different then those Elfs who have long been in the company of Humans. Either way, I'm really excited to see either in game footage or concept Art of these two Races.

I thought female elves especially needed more meat on their bones... and in the right places.

I'm afraid I'm a naysayer on the new Qunari. They look sort of Ed Hardy with those torso tattoos, and I'm particularly sorry to lose the bronze skin which was so defining for Sten.

Well, to be fair that is just one specific Qunari. There could be more that take on a appearance somewhat similar to that of Sten.

Well, it was one "canon" qunari. No, make that two; the merchant in Awakening. There were mercenaries and the two from Sten's Fade scene.
I was shocked at first, but now they have a clearer connection to ogres.

I hope they don't go way too mystical with the elves (making them look closer to dryads or whatever). Making the dwarves from Kal Sharok more brutal/barbaric sounds interesting.

Actually, if you bring Sten with you to the fade, you get to meet his fellow qunari companions who were killed when Sten and co. were ambushed by the darkspawn.  They all look identical with the same skin color and hair style.

I'm not totally sold in the new demonic look for the qunari, but perhaps it will turn out well in the end.  If Sten happens to make an appearance, I wonder what he would look like.

It's too bad that you don't get to play as elves or dwarves in DA2 with the upcoming makeovers.  I guess I can be happy that they at least make an appearance, and hopefully as recruitable squad-mates.

But Sten shouldn't be representative of their entire race any more than you are for yours.

All I can say about the new art thus far is that I don't believe its any huge step up from Origins. At best its a side step and at worst it looks nothing like what has been established visually in Origins. Thats all subjective, but looking across the internet its not like its a huge consensus loving it- its a rather split public on the new "hot rod samurai" art.

I'm willing to see it in the context of the whole, fleshed out game, but I can't help but feel like its a total reboot of DA. I hope BioWare can change my opinion on this, cause I want to like DA2 as I loved Origins. I just feel like more refined technology would have enabled them to tweak the look established in Origins, rather than seemingly throwing the baby out with the bath water and starting over on everything.

For me, it's a matter of continuity. Change is fine, as long as we're given believable reasons for the differences, and that goes for darkspawn as well as the different races. We shouldn't have to handwave it.

I remember seeing a mod that made the elves looked more wild than humans, while I personally hated it myself it would seem that it could work in theory. Elves aren't supposed to be thinner humans with no beards.

Can we ever go back to the Tolkein Elves who are taller than the average human and of almost ethereal beauty?

I wouldn't be surprised if the "new" elves end up being taller and more lithe- to fit the Shrieks, if nothing else.

The whole redesign/visual retcon of everything just reminds me of the Redesigned mod- changing things just for the sake of change.

Qunari sort of needed a change, though. Nothing made them stand out from a tanned 8 foot tall human.

Yeah, but did the hurlocks? Did Flemeth? Does everyone really need jagged, spiky armor? What worries me is that this game just looks entirely different from Origins to the point I  don't get why they're calling it  a sequel. It would be like calling Batman Begins a true sequel to Batman and Robin- sure its technically Batman, but the look and feel is totally different. Now I'm not saying the story telling tone will be differnet than Origins, but visually, this looks nothing like what they established in Origins. Some may like it, but from what I've seen so far, its disappointing.

I find the above statement hilarious for some reason. :P

TBH, the only change I'm really "huh?" about is the darkspawn stuff. I really can't get down with what I've seen of them at all so far.

For Dragon Age, I fear not. That was always my favorite depiction of elves (with the Keebler variety a close second :P). But I think it would just be too radical a shift.

It bugged me in EQ2 as well. I played a High Elf in EQ1, and I liked the height and all-around look. In EQ2, the look is fine, but they got seriously gimped in the height department.

DA2 still has plenty of time to improve, so it may look better in a few months.
