It's probably going to be really hard to do but just try and ignore the Star Wars stuff if you don't like it, concentrate on enjoying the characters, talk to them lots! Hope you enjoy :)

I will. It's the only option I have, right? Hehe.

Thanks. :)

I don't like the idea of being forced into a corner.  Giving only one romance option, and pretty much intertwining it with the plot to the point I can't skip it (like you can with the romances in DA:O), wouldn't sit well with me.

One would be just too... unsatisfactory. While I like the idea of having multiple romance-endings, I would like to have at least 3 romance options.

I sort of agree, not just with romance but with general PC relationships.

In both Mass Effect and Dragon Age the player is overwhelmed, it's like collecting Pokemon.

By "player" he actually means himself, of course.

I guarantee the majority of people who played both games attempted to  collect as many party members as possible in there first play-through than simply pick up a select  few for replayabilty. It's Pokemon. Pokemon being held in a gaint pokeball for use, not people.

Wait. Are you talking about picking up all the optional party members or doing all the romances in one playthrough?

Hahaha, I agree with the pokemon thesis.

I find a one romancable character very boring... specially since my tastes are always in conflict with the usual ones.

No. Roleplaying game- I like to decide who my character is into, if any of them. Plus one romancble would mean it would work out in one way and the character would have to be able to accept any of the PC's actions which would make them a lil bit crazy. AND I want there to be gay options and there most certainly won't if we assume everyone wants to be a straight guy who thinks elf chick with big boobs who could be very demure (Liara) or kick butt vixen (all the "women" in Sin City). No thanks.

I'm just curious how other fans would react to this idea. What would you think of having a single love interest for Hawke, who was his partner no matter what -- part of the basic plot setup like the main antagonist -- but with a really in-depth storyline that could be taken in many directions.

I think it would be awesome. I also think at least 75% of DA fans would march to the BioWare offices in Edmonton and burn them to the ground.

Although I'm a fan of male-male romances and one single love interest would almost certainly have to be female, I think it would be a worthwhile tradeoff in having more time and space to really flesh out one character and relationship.

And having one LI would avoid the typing that almost inevitably happens with a menu of different dates -- the Sweet One, the Dark One, the Sassy One, etc. One character could be given time to show all those sides of her personality in turn, and would not have to define herself by a single exaggerated trait.

Would it ****** folks off? Would female players be overly irritated about being forced into homoeroticism?

The idea of just having one romance options would not work for me no matter what kind it was.  First off it would decrease my replay interest.  Part of the entertainment for me is to see how the different romances play out.

Then you have the problem of the romance option being someone you don't like.  If I have more than once choice there is a better chance that one of them will be of interest to me.  What if the one choice is evil and I want a nice LI.  Or if the LI is nice, and someone wants a LI that is on the edge.

The game is not just about the romance, it's about choices and how they effect your character and others around you.  One romance option would just make the story less, not more. IMO  :)

1: Of course most people tried to get all the party members on the first playthrough then didn't bother with some of them later. That's how you decide which ones you like and which ones you don't like... by meeting them.
2: that has nothing at all to do with romances.

What about playing once where you uphold the love interest's ideals (for example, extreme Fereldan nationalism), once where you make an enemy of her by going against them, and once where you change her mind?

Just a question.. And if you don't like him/her?! What will you do then? I just cannot image a game like Dragon Age:Origins where my only possible LI was Morrigan (I apologize with her fans but I don't like her at all).
Considering that people have really different tastes I find almost impossible to create a LI that would please everybody. They cannot risk to leave many players disappointed about one of the most loved element of the game, and they cannot force them to play a LI they don't like if they want to have repliability

What if the one love interest doesn't fit the player's personality or the character he/she wants to roleplay? If you want to have a romance, choice is good since you're able to pick someone that is closest from your current play style (whether monogamous, heterosexual or otherwise) or even your own ideal of a romantic relationship.

Role-playing games are supposed to be better than a preset movie or other more linear games because of greater choice.

It's bad enough to be stuck with one human character, right after the original version presented so many other options with inherent replay value. Let's not give further reason for the developers to get lazy, and the publisher to save even more money.

I say the more the merier, but its also a matter of doing things right. In KOTOR you did have only one real romance, Bastilla (Juhani doesn't count for me, as her 'romance' didn't seem anything like a romance), and if you were female you could only even 'seem' to end up with her if you played as the dark side, and got the same 'sort of' romantic ending that you'd get as a male. It was still a great game, but it'd be nice to be able to play as light side once in a while (if you play as light side in KOTOR, you're forced to kill Bastilla unless you're playing as a male, its insane but true). So yeah, even as great a game as that was those were some pretty big flaws there.

'Could' it work? If DAO had only Leliana as a romance option for everybody? Or only Morrigan? I'm sure it'd still be a really good game, but why limit yourself to that? I like having playthroughs where I romance Leliana one time, and Morrigan another time. So I think yeah, a game 'could' be great with just the one really good romance option (so long as she was able to be 'turned good' or 'turned bad' depending on how you're playing the game, like Bastilla in KOTOR), but why settle for that? Why settle for two even? In ME2, there were a TON of romance options. Start with the 3 'Main' LIs Tali, Miranda, and Jack. Now throw in the 'continuation romances' of Liara and Ashley, AND the 'unofficial' romance with Kelly. Thats a full half dozen excellent romance options! So while yes, if you just limited it to one you'd be able to make it longer, the fact is that you can still have a LOT of really good romance with multiple options, so I'd totally prefer that.

You can play as a light side female in Kotor and not have to kill Bastilla, I did it, though its been so long I could never recall the dialog choices I made or what my persuasion was.

*fights urge to post lengthy off-topic declaration of love for Anomen Delryn*

(I think it helped a lot that my first PC, the one I romanced him with, was a Paladin. His reactions made a lot sense in that context - she was something he aspired to be and at the same time resented.  Also, she had a Charisma score of more than twenty by the time they met, so I'm not surprised he wanted her to tell him what to do all the time :).)

Haha, I guess if your playing a goody goody Paladin Anomen would be ok.  I put up with him for a bit on the first playthrough but after that is was "Ah fair maiden, be you a foce for good or evil?"  and I would end the conversation followed by either a disintegration spell or a backstab.

Guys, I will say this much:

I loved DA:O, and pretty much all of the BioWares games. (except the few that I haven't played and thus don't have an opinion on) The way they write stories and characters is fantastic. However open endedness has its benefits and its weaknesses. The depth of the relationships between the characters is one of the things that suffers a little bit as a result of necessitated variability. While some of BioWare's games have fantastic romances, like KotOR DA:O etc etc, none of them where of the power and intensity as other games that have literally brought tears to my eyes and had characters with no variability whatsoever.

This is not to say that any one style is better than another. They are just stronger at different things.

You know, if Bio said "We are going to have 12 different romances in DA2!", then yes, I would probably begin to worry and to say I'd prefer quality over quantity. But I really don't doubt they can manage to deliver at least two or three intriguing and emotional romantic options, with strong ties to the main story, giving us both choice AND depth. We all win this way.

Sure they can! That's why I'm not complaining one way or the other. Just felt the need to point out the flip side to all the "what if I don't like him/her?!" comments. There's two sides to every coin.

:P

Honestly, if you want to play a game with a romance integral to the story, play a non-BioWare game. One of the reasons they don't affect the story overtly is so players who don't like the options or don't like romance don't feel like they have to romance someone to get a whole experience.

I just think this would be a terrible choice, to have one major romance to the exclusion of all others. The romances are getting better as BioWare gains experience and hardware improves.

Then...you don't have any romances? And the only option you have is to make an enemy of her? That's a lot of fun roleplay, right there.

It doesn't change the fact you don't have anyone you like as a romance. Again, if you want to play a game with an in-depth, story-driven romance, pick a different studio to ask. BioWare is the only company that really does romance options, and this is a major step away from one of their high points.

People have different tastes in women/men. This would be a bad idea since people you may love may be hated by many.
