After Joker destroys Sovereign, a piece of the destroyed ship slams into the Citadel and crashes through the window.  Yet not only are Shepard and his crew able to breathe with open helmets, but the rescue team aren't wearing helmets at all.  Moreover, the glass in the background is perfectly intact.  The Sovereign debris seem to have gone through the window without breaking it.  Huh?

Shepard and Co. were on their suit's life-support, engineers repair the window, then go look for Shepard. Idiotic, but not impossible.

Honestly, this is the type of thing that people just put too much thought into. It's not worth worrying or arguing about.

I thought it went into the roof, and area we cant see, and those shields went up as soon as the debris hit to keep them breathing.

I had assumed the citadel had its own atmosphere, you can see clouds from the presidium after all. It is pretty massive, and if you can artificially generate gravity on a ship then why not bind an atmosphere to it? (I'm sure there is an answer to that question, some reason why it's impossible, but there's no point putting that much thought into it. And yes, if that were the case then why did they need masks after leaving the elevator when it stopped? But, again, too much alanysis.)
Edit: Spelling

The codex says that the atmosphere only goes about seven meters up. I think there are much bigger plot holes in this game than this. If all records of Illos were destroyed so that the Reapers couldn't find it, how the hell could Liara recognize it?

Its a cheesy science fiction action RPG about humanoid aliens fighting gigantic sentient mechanical crustaceans with most technological plot elements explained by a deus ex machina.

In the end, there will be some holes.

Oh, yeah. Well, back to life as usual.

Do you want logic, or a video game?

Wasn't the citadel protected by some... shield or something? Similar stuff you see when ships are docking/undocking.

Your implication that one cannot reasonably expect both is quite false.

I think the Citadel Tower probably has emergency mass-effect fields that activate to seal in atmosphere in the event of hull breaches, similar to the fields you see on the Normandy SR-1 bridge (and again on the SR-2 after passing through the Omega-4 Relay) when it sustains damage.

I'm so sick of this wizard. He can do everything.

Hey, Dr. Deus ex Machina worked hard for his reality altering skills. The least you could do is show a little respect.

I thought about this too, but after ME2 I think I know how it happens. When you have to fight the eye thing in ME2 during the suicide mission in the cargo bay, the ship has lots of breaches which are covered by shields. If the Normandy can put shields up on hull breaches I'm pretty sure a Space Station built by very advanced aliens can do the same.

This is the ME1 forum, don't spoil any ME2 stuff in here for people. <_<

Aw, come on. "Shields fix holes" isn't much of a spoiler.

But describing fights in ME 2 is spoilery and the fact that your ship gets shot up, and that there is a suicide mission.  So the post is chalked full of spoilery goodness.

I just completed ME again and I think I know the answer for liara knowing about Ilos. Vigil said that a few scientist survived after the reaper attack then send a message about Ilos across the galaxy and then the scientists died because of a lack of resources and food.

After that sentence, it was incredibly obvious.

You read at your own peril.

He's still breaking the rules. And it wasn't "incredibly obvious." This forum is supposed to be Mass Effect 2 spoiler-free, and he could have been referencing a game mechanic from Mass Effect 2 without using a spoiler.

Back on topic, what about the damage? The cutscene clearly shows the debris coming straight for the giant window, which was then intact after the impact. Most of you are missing that point.
