When I first started using this editor I made a forum post where I requested the tools to create dynamic lighting. It was explained that the editor mostly uses pre-baked lighting. There's static lights, but you cannot influence them in any way. A few weeks later I tried my hands on the VFX editor where I noticed it's possible to create both character and level dynamic lighting by creating a VFX.

This made me wonder, why isn't this utilized in the game? The engine doesn't seem to have much problem handling several VFX effects (though, vfx lighting might be the exception). Using VFX, you should be able to lit and un-lit a room by (e.g.) using a trigger area to control it. Have anyone tested this? I've created a boss fight where dynamic lighting plays a role, but I haven't got around to testing the performance requirements of it.

Only baked lights are pre-baked. The others all have a dynamic component to them. I don't know if you can modify them via scripting though.

You can't modify level lights, after render there's nothing you can do to influence them (afaik).

The only aspect of dynamic aspect I can imagine is how it will light objects that aren't baked into the level, such as the player character and placeables. I don't think you can occlude it either.

hmm, i think this may clear it up a little for you dewkl:

ambient and baked lights affect lightmappable objects only (read: props). Static and animated (flickering) lights affect both props AND placeables (and creatures, etc)

Static lighting doesnt look as nice (generates really rough, ugly shadows). If youre using VFXes, then shadow maps won't be baked either... so expect no shadows whatsoever. not even bad ones.

That said, I agree - theres no reason you can't use a switch to illuminate a room. Remember though, that the player may well have auras which have light VFXes too, such as flaming weapons... of course, you can use this to your advantage by making an item called "torch" with a nice VFX and a light on it.

only 3 dynamic lights can hit the same object, if you got more things will start look weird. ie some lights will not effect some objects because they have already reached their limit.

so if you have four creatures each with a torch, things will not look right. that's probably the reason why we didn't get any torches with the game.
