The (currently showing me as author) Sticky on top describes the official PC Problem Report procedure.  But some come in here and either don't want to read Pinned Helps, or didn't like what Chris wrote, so I'd been offering this as an alternartive.

No information, however, equals nothing useful in return.  It's simple.

                            Preliminary diagnostic information

First, however, what have you learned using the forum's SEARCH tool?

After failing to learn anything substantive that way, since PCs are not *anything* at all like game console systems, it adds another dimension to a question.  That may not be news to you, but many noobs come here for help who have no such idea at all.  There is literally almost nothing that is truly a "standard" between various branded PCs, making the game developers' jobs very difficult, and requiring that warning labels be attached to game boxes for any games with serious requirements.

Because most of those noobs, and even many of the more experienced gamers as well, will have have misunderstood how to evaluate their PC compared to that game box warning label, we have to start from here.  Please fill it all in (if you have a problem being able to deal with that request, and are in the Bioware Social Sites' forums, do a search for "Basics" without the quote marks, to get a rundown on Windows' built-in component inventory functions).

Basic Hardware Specification Chart (Empty so far)

Game Version:   9.- -  (also include expansions installed)
Retail or Digital: Retail DVD / Digital Version Vendor
    Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
    Processor Type: Athlon 64 / X2 / X3 / Pentium / dual core, Pentium D, i7 Quad Core, etc.
    Processor Core Speed: -.- GHz
Operating System / Service Pack: Such as WindowsXP/SP2, Windows Vista/SP1, W7 etc.
    System RAM:  X.x  GBs
Direct3D APIs dated:  (Dx9 version date)
Video Card Manufacturer: Either ATI, or  nVIDIA, not including Intel (no support).
Video Card Model: (examples only) Radeon  HD 5670 / Geforce GT240
Video Card RAM: (example) 256 MBs
Video Card Driver Version: (examples) Catalyst 7.10 / 196.21 (use numbers, not the word latest)
Sound Card Manufacturer: Creative Labs of whatever make or brand
Sound Card Model: SB XFi or whatever applies for your sound card
    Sound Card Driver date:
Sound Card Driver Version: 4.34 (again, numbers please)
DVD Type: (DVD/ROM or DVD/RW, SCSI IDE, etc.)
Hard Drive Type: (SCSI, IDE, SATA)
Free Disk Space:  C:\\\\\\\\ 15GB (Indicate additional drive letters and amount of free space where game and saved files are located if you have multiple or partitioned drives).
Power Supply:  (include brand and wattage rating of the power supply and amperage on the 12-volt rail for PCs). This information is usually available on a label on the power supply.

Description: Describe your technical problem as best as you can
(Now quoting Bioware's Chris Priestley)

"      Problem Details

a.      When it comes to problem details, think about the five basic questions. Who? What? When? Where?
Why? Okay, so “Who?” doesn’t really apply here, but the others do.

b.     What? What is the nature problem that you’re seeing?

c.      When? When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only
after so many hours of play?

d.     Where? Where does the problem occur? Is the problem localized to a particular planet or does
it occur everywhere?

e.     Why? As much as possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps?

If you follow these guidelines, and provide the requested information when posting, it will increase the likelihood that someone will be able to help you diagnose the problem and find a solution."

(And this is only for the raw hardware & driver variations.  Potential software conflicts are far more likely to be game play problems, and developers cannot test for all possible program loads.)

P. S.  Please use every day business style paragraph breaks, punctuation, and spelling.  Solid blocks of wall to wall unbroken text must be ignored, and also any juvenile IM/TM-style misspelled & unintelligible gibberish.

This is an unofficial, alternate report template, and still includes Chris' questions at the end same as the pinned sticky on top.

Hmmm.  No harm done, this forum isn't actually the one I thought I needed to update this type reminder in, however.

We seem to have a fresh batch coming in who won't read the stickies. Asking questions while providing no data is just wasting the forum's space, and the readers' time. If you seriously want help from the other gamers here, you have to do your part.  If you want official support, that is provided on EA's Help Site.

Same thing, once again.

It's worth repeating that when the PC version was cloned from the Xbox360 code by Ossian (I think that's who did it), no one who really understood graphics was involved in naming the System Requirements, which ended up being incorrect.

Minimum System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC
(Corrected from dumb, Pie in the Sky lies to the real thing)

Operating System:
Windows XP or Vista

Processor:
2.4+GHZ Intel or 2.0+GHZ AMD

Memory:
1 Gigabyte Ram (XP)
2 Gigabyte Ram (Vista)

Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series (6800GT or better: 210, 310, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600 GS, 8200, 8300, 8400 GS, 8500, 9100, 9200, & 9300 are below minimum system requirements)
ATI Radeon X1800 GTO or better (X1300, X1300 Pro, *X1550*, HD 2400, HD 3100, HD 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4250, HD 4350, HD 4550, and (probably) HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements)

Hard Drive Space:
12 Gigabytes

Sound Card:
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers
----------

In December, 2009, the requirements for ME2 PC were announced, still using the  UT3 engine, however, the minimum video cards are the Vanilla 6800 and the Radeon X1600 Pro.

Recommended System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC

Operating System:
Windows XP or Vista

Processor:
2.8+GHZ Intel or 2.4+GHZ AMD

Memory:
2 Gigabyte Ram

Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX or higher.
ATI X1800 XL series or higher

Hard Drive Space:
12 Gigabytes

Sound Card:
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers – 5.1 sound card recommended

-----------

This one has a *DRM/rootkit* from Sony included in its "Copy Protection", so I won't be playing it (unless/until that is removed).

-----------

(For whatever reason, ME attracts a larger share than usual of total noobs to PC Gaming, wanting to ask about low quality semi-garbage video cards.  Here's the lineup of those "No-Go" parts {ranked in reverse order of ineptitude - best is first, worst is last, and Intel, naturally, isn't in the running at all}):

HD 4550 > HD 3470 > HD 4350 > 9400 GT > 8500 GT > HD 2400XT > X1300 Pro > X1550 > 7300 GT > 6600 Vanilla > HD 3450 > 9300 GS > 8400 GS > 7300 GS > HD 2400Pro > 8300 GS > X1300 > X600 Pro > 7300 LE > X550 > X1050 > 7200 GS > X300 > 9550 > X300 SE > Xpress200 (IGP) > 7100 GS > 6200A.

-----------
Additional Note from Derek French:

The Mass Effect Config program will automatically adjust your settings on first run, to attempt to give you an optimal play experience. As with all PC games, computer performance varies from system to system and adjustments can be made via the Config or through the in-game options to tailor your experience.

At least one new arrival claimed to have "read the stickies", and still won't fill out a problem report.  I'd have to say he /she was "reading" through the (very opaque) bottom of his / her coffee cup or soft drink container . .

Good morning, people, and happy 4th of July. Enjoy your picnics and official fireworks displays. Let's be very careful about any private use of rockets, particularly, with widespread dry conditions across the west and southwest!

Having the holiday fall on a Monday, it will be Wednesday, now, before the readership in the forums will pick up again. Searching the archives with Google and Yahoo, not with the crap for a Find that the forums offers, is going to be your best way to get answers today.

If you hope to get an answer, you should do whatever it takes to make your question more useful as a source of data for those who might think about answering. That means to pay attention to the guides on how to complete a normal problem report in here.

Today, in spite of being pointed to the forum's sticky on how to report his / her problems, we have a new member still very determined to turn everyone here into clairvoyants who can provide answers based on inadequate information. Admittedly, my descriptions of how to report are strictly text, as have been Priestly's versions.  In the ME2 Tech forum, Pacifien created an illustrated version, and relatively recently, Raen Imrahl replaced the "Read First" guide in the DAO Tech forum with his own illustrated description of the procedures.

In today's case, the extremely low level of computer literacy that seems to be revealed is much worse than usual, however.

We always must have certain information before we can attempt a diagnosis, this has not changed, and new arrivals continue to wear blindfolds coming in here. There is a sticky thread about this.

What's so difficult about paying attention to pinned posts?
