Well, I was thinking about how it could really break the immersion in DA:O if you made a player character that looked so little like their supposed family you'd have to wonder how people could even believe they were related. With a new character you could easily end up with something like this, where IRL everyone would question that relation. "That goatee isn't fooling anyone..."

I've seen that we will be able to customize Hawke, I'm wonderig if since Bethany is not only a companion, but is Hawke's sister will we be able to customise her appearence to an extent as well? I'd hate to have to spend a bunch of time in the toolset making an assortment of morphs for her. I probably will if I need to, but it would be so much easier to just set her appearence at the start of the game.

They did a little of this in Fallout 3...it wasn't great but did at least modify the skin tone...it change the shape a tiny bit.

I would gladly except just a change in skin tone to match family members.

Much as I myself normally dislike meddling with how my companions look, I'd agree on Bethany's part. She looks to have fairly dark hair too, so changing her skin-tone to match the players doesn't seem like it would result in any weird colour combinations (Unless her hair coloured changed to match too, which would also work).

I totally agree with this. They should either let you customise her appearance yourself or the game should match hair and skin colour to the player created character. Either would suit me fine.

It's called PC MODS

And besides, she could be your half-sister or maybe you were adopted or maybe she was

Bethany is fine as she is... well, except for the plastic hair.

No need for a custom sister.

As Alexia89 mentioned, it's been done before, in FO 3.  They could do this for the family member on any of the systems.  Mods are for when you want a character that has blue skin and pink hair.  :D

i kind of liked having a set appearance for family members in DA:O. gave my uncreative mind something to shoot for when making a character.

Speaking of her hair, is it me or is her hair purple?

Yes, in the picture where you see her face she has purple hair, but in any other picture her hair is brown.. I don't know why...maybe those colors are not definitive? Or that purple colour is a reflex she has on her hair for some reason ?

On topic: My answer is no. I don't wanna customize her.

They should have a choice in the beginning: Asian - Black - Hispanic - White

Something like how they managed it in fallout 3 would be great. They wouldn't have to change anything else about her design, just lighten or deepen the skin tone a bit. I don't feel the need to customize her much more than that though.

This is all assuming you two are even related by blood. It wouldn't surprise me at all if she were a step sister or half sister.

I wouldn't necessarily mind it if her skin tone changed but I don't think it's necessary. If I play a black character and she's white, for example, it won't bother me that much. Believe it or not, that can really happen. I'm pretty sure it's rather rare, but sometimes, say, a black couple can give birth to a white child and vice-versa.

<-- Maybe I can recreate my avatar to the left here. I was thinking of naming him 'Hamburger Hawke'. :)

I think if I tweak her hair to a more auburn/ purple we should look like twins!!!!!111

Besides that, we are unsure of the Hawkes' parentage. If we never see them, how do we know they're both white? Perhaps you're adopted. Maybe Bethany is adopted. Who knows?

Is it wrong that my first thought upon reading the thread of this title was of the Barbie line of dolls?

I mentioned PC Mods in the first post of the thread (I got the PC version of DA:O specifially for the mods and the toolset), but that doesn't really help people on the consoles. Morphs are also kind of a hassle to do, so much tweaking...

You're right though, she may not be a blood related sister or just a half sister, I have someone I was raised with that I consider a sister and we're not related at all (psuedo-adoption, parents in relationship). If that's the case maybe she should have default appearence, but if she is blood related it would be nice to customize her a bit.

Albininsm isn't all that uncommon, 1 in 20,000 I think, but a black couple giving birth to an albino child isn't exactly the same thing as giving birth to a "white child", it also doesn't really work the other way around. I'm pretty certain there is no genetic condition that causes far more dark pigmentation in the skin than normal, if there is one it's incredibly rare.

He wasn't talking about albinism.  Occasionally, black parents can have white children.  We actually had a speaker at my school when I was in high school who was one of the whitest guys I've ever seen, yet he had black parents.

That said, my hope is that Bioware goes with the half-sister approach, and that there's therefore no need to change Bethany's appearance.

Well, if Hawke is Black/Asian/Hispanic etc. then I assume he/she was adopted (or Bethany was assuming that we don't see Hawke's parents).

It would be nice if her skin tone was at least a close match to your PC's, yes.

Wait, am I the only one to remember Deus Ex, where your brother got different hair color depending on your hair color? (note : in that game the face couldn't be changed... you were still a badass with glasses... )

Argh, my warden was Asian, and to be standing around the Cousland family made him look.... weird.... to be the second son...
