Anathemic wrote...True, I'm not saying fixed character RPGs are terribad, I loved ME1, I hated ME2. The problem with DA2 and Hawke though is that Hawke has literally no backed up info or leverage on his character, this wouldn't be an issue if the DA series started Hawke as a fixed character to begin with, like how ME started with Shepard to begin with.
And if anyone is going to say that DA:O had 'Origins' in it and it is logical to assume that the Warden will not be continuing over, well...

Bioware always said that the franchise was more about the world, not 1 character. I know DA2 has Dragon Age and a 2 in its name but thats the vagaries of marketing, you've got to start thinking of it as a totally separate game from DAO, just set in the same world and structured so it needs more of a fixed character, albeit one that will still be able to be customised to a large degree. Yes its a sequel as well, not continuiing the Warden's story doesn't stop it from being a sequel.

From an online dictionary:
Sequel
1. anything that follows from something else; development
2. a consequence or result
3. a novel, play, etc., that continues a previously related story

It doesn't have to have feature the same character.

You click a lot more in DA:O than you do in The Witcher.

Edit: 'Terribad'...is that what the kids are saying nowadays? I can never keep up. :(

Logic and rational critical thinking is not welcomed on the internet. As soon as the office is opened tommorrow I will be revoking your pass.

Anathemic just by mentioning Halo 2 weakens your point because it does not follow just Master Cheif but it is as much about the elite character.

So, I've played a bit more (to end of Chapter 1) and I can say I like the game though still not grabbed by the story much. And I don't feel it's the kind of RPG that I really want when I pick up a game called RPG. Geralt doesn't feel like my character and his interaction with the world is pretty shallow. He's sexy, though, I'll give him that!

Best part thus far has been the dice minigame. :D

I agree with your statement entirely.  I liked the Witcher, but I haven't been able to finish it.  I keep trying, but I get bored with the story and start playing other games until I eventually try to go back to finish the Witcher - unsuccessfully.  I think the furthest I've gotten is Chapter 3.

The dialogue is so corny.  Geralt's deep philosophical moments seem out of character - they just pop up out of the blue.  I had myself wondering if he was sneaking a joint when I wasn't looking.  I found the so-called grey consequences that are praised as making the game a dark fantasy to make absolutely no sense sometimes.  Grey choices are wonderful, but the consequences have to make sense for the action.

DAO writing is so, so much better.  I laughed, I cried, and I cared for all of my PCs and my PCs companions.  I have been unable to make that connection with Geralt or anyone other character in the Witcher so far.

I cried at the loading times in DA:O. That was about it.

I think that the overall feel to TW world would be i[]tired[/i]. And that was intended.

Anathemic wrote...
I tend not to like fixed character in RPG's but the Witcher is the exception. You have to take in mind that the whole universe of the Witcher is based off the books and Geralt, so it is understandably reasonable to have a fixed character, unlike Hawke who we had no idea about and no grasp on who he is yet (besides what he's 'going' to do).

I agree for the most part. But Iwould not write off DA2 and Hawke just yet. It may develop really well. With the expirience BW has with storytelling? They should overcome :)

Yes, DA is about the world, setting. And I like that. I like how you can customise your char. Kind of from zero to hero.

As for TW writing. I must say all you native speakers, anglophones and other bunch - are at disadvantage, original polish writing is really good. Not as good as DAO writing but still really good. The difference is in detals like the subject of writing. TW is really interesting while DAO has this "high production value". This example may illustrate better what I have in mind: TW is like Gran Torino, a marvelous story, amazing movie with ******-of-a-poor support acting for the most part. DAO is a really good Hollywood blockbuster with intriguing story and great technical and financial support, still a little cliche and ad formula.

Hyping the game. I understand the logic behind it.
One simple trailer and a poster wont do these days. but I like the approach CDP is taking. Look at the feedback TW2 and its presentation from Gamescom 2010. Best show there was by many jurnalists. And it wasnt the biggest show either. Props for that and the press kit :) Idea behind ready notes like in you dont have to take notes freom this presentation, we did it for you was funny like hell imo.

Community...
TW community is really great I must say. I'm not saying they are the greatest and all, sure you;ll find idiots and trolls like everywhere else but its a smaller problem. Plus ppl are really helpful over there, contribute to the fanbase greatly. The topic DAO vs TW is mostly about  how did you like DAO. Forumites discuss different aspects of both games, and lots of them enjoyed DAO greatly, so I cant say that theres a commpetition or hostile approach between the two. I was on the BW boards before DAO and TW's just after the the game went beta (I think) so I have some perspective. To be honest I wouldnt be surprised if both boards had the same fanbase just different accounts :) like in my case.

Not only The Witcher seems like a major challenger. I`m not a mmo guy but Guild Wars 2 and SW:TOR seem like very good games. Especially GW2 since its not plagued by monthly fees and people outside the good life of US(and the usual suspects) can`t afford such luxuries.

You know that if you can't just click fest your way through The Witcher, right? And if you can't hit a level 5 combo strike, you really have no idea of how amazing it is. DA combat systems does seems like one out of a MMO sometimes. Skills on a quickbar and you don't click the mouse, ok, you break your keyboard hitting the number keys! heh

But I love them both. Timed mouse clicks like TW and Timed mouse clicks + direction keys for different attack moves like Gothic and Risen are fun as hell, to me. If I can be as skilled as the character I'm playing and make him as skilled as the actor playing his role.. it's all good!

Games that don't let or require the player to have some skill is like a movie where the main actor never does ****. Only stuntmen gets to do the "funny" parts. But gladly there are a few actors that demand to do all their stunts themselves i/o relying on other people's skill. Gives them more credibility, imho.

And after finishing DA:O some 20+ times, The Witcher, Risen and the Gothics about a dozen times each, the one point in favour of DA:O that outstands compared to these other great games is the replayability. While they are always fun to replay every now and then, DA:O allows me to replay quite differently every time and with quite different characters too.

Real pitty that DA2 won't let us have that.

EDIT: Oh, and I've just read that Risen 2 is announced! Yay for great games continuing their saga!

They are doing another Sacred?. When was that picture taken?

It says they were successful games and that those games are in development. The one under Risen says it is a sequel.

Once all sword styles are upgraded, combat in TW becomes quite spectacular and perfectly conveys the momentum & speed that separates a Witcher from a mere mortal and makes it possible for them to slay monsters.

Combat in DA looks pathetic in comparison, with two guys swinging swords at the each other like retards... without even any parry or block animations.

Only gripe about the combat in TW is that some monsters are not deadly enough, e.g. the bruxae who are amongst the most terrifying enemies in the books. Not to mention the striga... was pretty underwhelming.

Translation:

Sacred: One of the most internationally successful Action RPG brands. Developed for Console and PC

Risen: The continuation to 2009´s most successful German RPG. Developed by Piranha bytes for Console and PC.

Edit: The top line says: Deep Silver - Strong titles in Development.

Missed that Line at first.

Rebalance mod. I really missed the silver sword in chapter 1 this time. Had to learnt which potions woked to better deal with strong monsters. Use the sword oils. Aard is no longer game breaking. Even got the drowner repelant amulet to better my chances againt the big one.

Though the Striga (beginning cinematic) wasn't a huge challenge in the book either. Sure, he ended up wounded, but that was only because he let down his guard when checking the girl. Indeed, he expected the Aard to work better, but otherwise everything pretty much went according to plan (except for that whole fatal injury part of course, heh). That's how I read it anyway.

Agreed about the Bruxa though. She was serious trouble...

Screw what type of game it feels like, stick with it, I doubt you'll regret having experienced the whole story. :) Salamandra/payback isn't really what the story is about. Your Geralt might think it is (for all I know), but it's deeper and more interesting than that.

You click a lot more in DA:O than you do in The Witcher.

Nooo, not even.  Having to click on a timed basis is not my favorite aspect of The Witcher, to be sure.  Just not good at twitchy reflex stuff.  And having Geralt stop attacking just because I missed the click time is so annoying.

I wonder how many Witcher fans will have the hardware to run II in all its glory. My biggest concern though is optimization. Brand new graphics engines can either be really awesome or run like crap on any machine.

Pick me pick me! :)

Will have the ram and hardware to fully enjoy The Witcher 2 in all its glory!

Just bought 4 gigs of ram for $78.00 canadian.

The BS stories about computers costing a fortune to upgrade are as outdated and idiotic as those that continue to spread them!

Oh and since were on truths, Bioware never said DA franchise was about world and not characters (well not originally anyways, might of said it recently as spin, ive all but stopped listening to them to be honest). It amazes me how much BS the pro anything Bioware crowd will spin and shovel to validate their oh so special company.

They say it can run on consoles, and that the new engine is designed for 3 cores, exactly what the xbox has. But I look at those screen shots and wonder...

I gave the Witcher a go after reading you guys talking about it on the forum.

Saddly i couldnt get passed the first town. Having to timely click for him to attack wasnt interesting, but it was not that bad either ( i played worst gameplay for a good story ). Its the RP i had most problem with. Like at the really beginning, you save an inn lady from being raped by bandints. when you accompaign the lady to her house, you get 2 choices of dialog that go like this ( ill paraphrase cause my memory isnt that good) A) Dont reward me, i love to run errans for nothing B) Now how about you show me your ******.   Asking a lady for that after saving her from an assault... hummm no.

I know its probably just cause im a girl but having more options there would have been welcome. I gave the game to my boyfriend and kept playing DA. Everyone's happy.

Yeah, I think you have to be in a certain frame of mind about the sex cards. It's comic relief. Except.. Abigail's card? OMG, Geralt buddy, you obviously had potion goggles when you did her. LOL

I hope they approach the sex/ romance angle in less than junior high fashion in W2. Geralt is sexy, I believe that women would be throwing themselves at him, but a bit of conversation before or after would be nice.

Thanks for the translation, Tirigon! So, Risen will have a sequel and they didn't add a 2 to it? Won't lots of people "be confused"? arf arf arf™

I don't know why people have problem with Geralt and his cards. They are all optional, except for two IIRC. You can save Abgail and still do not eat from her witch pot!

For the record, I'm a super fanatic fan boy... but like I said... this is not like my Corinthians, "the best football team in the planet"! (or course, any fan of any other club will disagree). I can never support another team. So I am a fan boy of many awesome games!

But games? The more great games there are, the happier I am. I'm registered on Bioboards since BG, then later NWN, NWN 2 and now DA:O.

On JooWood's Gothic forums since Gothic 3 but I had played (and loved) Gothic 2 since release.

On Deep Silver's Risen forums since release. And on World of Gothic where Piranha Bytes the Managing Director usually posts and talks to the community, as well as other PB staff... kinda like BW people here... only that there the boss is always present! =)

On, and on CDP's The Witcher forums too.

Heck, even on Bethesda's MW and Oblivion forums. I really had a great time with those games, although I don't think I'll be able to ever play them again.

virumor wrote...

Perfectly said and I fully agree with you! And people having a hard time with the timing, just change diff to Novice or Intermediate because the cursor will have a HUGE tip for the right time to attack. With the Isometric camera that will make the game very familiar to players used to the NWN/NWN2 camera.

With the OTS I don't know how's the tips-to-click other than in Expert mode where it's very subtle and I don't even pay attention to it. Once you get the feeling for the right time to attack, prolly after a few runs with the game in lower diffs like I did, you can really enjoy it.

Don't sell yourself short if you can't master any game combat system right at the first time you play. I doubt many people do. But even a very average player like me can master many different systems in many different games and it's a very good feeling when I do get it. A little determination, persistence and well, of course, enough time to play the game. People with no time to learn or to play ccompulsively, should not try the hardest difficulty of games because they're usually demanding and very frustrating on a first run.

Abigail creeped me out more than any other -- unless it's one that I didn't get.

I thought the cards were a good mechanism. They give you a reward for doing something that your character finds rewarding.
