Sex isnt what makes a video game 'mature', be it Witcher or DA.

Neither is violence and gore, and by that logic The Sims is the most mature game.

You are right violence and gore do not make I video game mature but you can not say that the Sims cannot be mature just because the game does not have those things, maybe you are associating maturity to adult themes? I think of mature as a opposite do immature and juvenile, there are kids more mature then adults but they are not adults and vice versa.

In conclusion if we use the escapist video to compare the two games I am more incline to accept Dragon Age as a more mature game but that is not true, both have some degree of maturity but The Witcher have a more dark way of putting it because of the Scandinavian and east European folklore as opposite to Dragon Age that have a more colorful story in some dark situations.

I'll take emotional complexity over sex and violence any day.  That's my simple idea of a "mature" story.  Not that I don't appreciate a orgy of violence.

Adultness is a part of maturity, it's not the same but a part. You wont let your kids see adult content because they are not mature enough to conprehend it. So in this part I agree with you.
But I've said it before and will say it again, nudity done right = mature. It's about the context around it, not the thing it self. Seeing a topless woman being tortured is more mature then a romance scene were 2 people wear underwear during the deed.

And ofcause nudity can be avoided and it still can be mature, so can gore and violence, yet no one seems to care about that much. But they must shout their disaprovel if there is nudity in it, because somehow it is way more worst then violence.

Don't take the escapist seriously. The guy is an entertainer, and he revels in snark and sarcasm, not serious commentary.

TW is darker and more pessimistic. In DA you almost always got a perfect solution clear cut (Orzammar being the closest thing to an exception), in TW the main conflict was to choose the lesser evil or have both sides as the enemy. Besides, rather than resolving a situation often all you could do was damage control. In that way the world behaves in a more realistic way than DA, so it can be considered more mature in that sense.

It´s a bit hard to defend the approach to sex considering the devs agree with the main opinion and taken a different route from TW2. I can´t compare romances between games however, I think DA are superior but I´m a Yenn-Geralt shipper, so I just didn´t feel attached to Shani or Triss romances.

True ;)... I don't think The Witcher is a "mature" game because there is a sex/nudity ... I say that because The Witcher have a "grey strory" where you never know who is good or bad and so on... And I very pleased of fact The Witcher 2 will be have even more better in terms of shades of gray ;)

Mature is a game if it teaches you how to solve your problems correctly. That means, there must be lots of sex, violence, and killing of everythinng that disagrees with you.

Yes I agree that some people view gore as a lesser evil, it is stupid because if the game have adult themes there are for adults and I hate when people make a problem about some side boob in Mass Effect when the game is suppose to be for old teenagers not 10 years old. By the way the only sex scene that I liked from Bioware games was ME 1 the rest of the games were bad or really bad :P

You are right yes if "nudity done right = mature" but like you said, it really did not need it to be mature but I think that The Witcher kinda fail in this aspect, the game did not evoke from me any care for any of the LIs and I agree with Nerevar-as

This is why I think that their next game will be one of the best rpgs of 2011 they change for the better, I never ever saw a LI in a game that is a mage and have a full leather armor. Just with that I know they change something about the way they view the romance, still I can be wrong LOL

Yup I know that is why I do not agree with the tone of the joke because both have some degree of maturity The Witcher just do really bad on the romance but is really good with the cause and consequence thing, Dragon Age on the other hand is bad at the exaggeration of gore but it really good on character development and romance.

For me, I just can't get behind playing as a guy. Unless the second game offers a "female" option, I guess I'll sit this one out. Too bad, too, because it really looks good.

It won't offer the option. I guess you'll miss out a lot then :)

The gender thing has never been an obstacle for me, in fact, a female Witcher sounds pretty cool.

If they made a game with Ciri as a playable character, it could be possible. Except she doesn't have the witcher mutations.

The Witcher did break new ground for the fantasy genre, no question.

How so?  Feels like pretty normal fantasy lore to me.

It's about as far away from Tolkien as you can get.

Witcher is not about a grand struggle between good & evil or saving the world from ancient evils, it's more a personal quest on the background of political intrigue.

That's what sets it apart from standard fantasy & BioWare cRPGs.

...and a twist on some of the all-time favorite fairytales. Genetics, economics 2.0, some philosophy that looks like taken from modern day society - all mixed with sword, magic and dragons.
Not to mention conjunction of the spheres and multiple worlds/alter realities exist.

But all are totally different from Tolkien. Seriously, Tolkien´s elves have more in common with StarCraft´s Protoss than with the elves in Witcher.....

Tolkien introduced the theme of the old races making place for the new race of humans.

Tolkien's Elves & Dwarves also lost their hegemony to the humans, the difference is that they accept it and still have a few locations where their power is great. Not to mention, the humans not putting them in ghettoes.

as long as game will match the realities with books of A. Sapkowski there will never by "female" witcher cause witchers in book have rule that only boy's can stand mutation ;)... soo sorry "female mode" lovers...

and before 100 of people will start crying " what about Ciri!!!" ... she didn't pass mutation soo she is not a "female" Witcher. EOS
