Nhsk, you hit it right on the nose. Voice acting isn't always better.

Also, spend less money on presenatation and more story, Bioware. Give me a story not some tech demo like Quake(they could still get away with it today, as it is a FPS! I love those too but I would like story to be important).

Sadly, I never beat Baldur's gate 2. I tried it and lost interest - now that is blasphemy, especially on this site. I'm pretty sure I'll try it again someday though. I believe in force feeding myself something if I think it will grow on me later.

MGS1 was a 1998 game, and I consider it to be greatest game ever made. The Curse of Monkey Island is a 1997 game and I much prefer it over any RPG before 2003. Heck, Broken Sword 1 is a 1996 game and it's far better than any game of the 90s (excluding MGS1).

None of those features you mentioned really matter if their presentation sucks. I don't care about graphics, but if there's no voice acting the game becomes VERY dull and isn't in the least bit immersive.

EDIT:

I know none of the games I mentioned are RPGs, which is exactly my point, old RPGs suck and comparing them to any RPG post 2005 is like comparing a 90s adventure game to a text adventure game from the 80s (meaning any voiced 90s adventure game > any text adventure)

Of course there are exceptions, for one I prefered PS: T over VTMB, NWN1 and Deus Ex: IW.

For reference, here's my top 19 RPGs: (out of those that I have played and finished)

01. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
02. Mass Effect 2
03. The Witcher
04. Dragon Age: Origins
05. Mass Effect
06. Fallout 3
07. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
08. Alpha Protocol
09. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords
10. Deus Ex
11. Fable: The Lost Chapters
12. Jade Empire
13. Neverwinter Nights 2
14. Planescape: Torment
15. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
16. Fallout 2
17. Fallout
18. Deus Ex: Invisible War
19. Neverwinter Nights

Thats a very comprehensive list. I'm impressed. I've only played a handful of the games you list, but almost all of them are considered required playing for rpg enthusiasts.

Can't say I can blame oyu. The opening dungeon is one of the worst levels in history. I must have played BG2 at elast 14 times, but I got the Dungeon-Be-Gone mod at the first possible opportunity.

Wow they've taken constructive critism from the presentation on board and are going to change the game accordingly!!? (female tourture boobs), that's pretty impressive. Everything I've heard about TW2 has been awesome tbf and I think it's very impressive that they're having a non-transitional open world without having to compromise on great graphics or story as some people would have us believe is nessersary.

I've not played TW1 but soley based on what I'm seeing from TW2 I'm definitley getting it soon.

Right it's on it's way getting the enhanched edition - platinum for less than £10.

I'll let you all know my first impressions and my thoughts as I play it in comparison to DA:O if you like.

Also more commentary on the 'fixated' reviewer, about the boobs thing.

www.neoseeker.com/news/14863-witcher-2s-nude-woman-torture-scene-being-reconsidered/

I think CD-Project will still have her topless, but it will be more focused on the "poor woman being tortured".

So they're already thinking about censoring the game?  Very disappointed if they tone down anything.

They never said anything like that, nor will they ever censore it. They say that they are thinking on remaking the scene so that prudents don't see a porn star, but rather a woman being tortured (I did saw that the first time, but w/e). So my guess is that if they do change it, it will enhence the woman being tortured, but she will most proberly still be topless.

Prudes will be prudes. The very situation she was in was a big turn off to me, if the reviewer thought that was sexual he´d better check himself. If they focus on the violence the scene will be even more disturbing, and if they cover her it takes a lot from "realism", though in real life they would probably have had her full nude. Pity they listened to him when most people thought he overreacted.

well I think that Tom saying that they will change this scene have in mind this that they will be show her in more realistic way... so if she was been tortured then CDP will show more violence in this scene but I'm sure of that she will be topless. Red's want to be realistic that's certain.

Are you counting expansions in the main game rankings? I'm curious where the NWN1 and 2 expansions would fit in. Also, no Morrowind? Didn't make the cut, didn't play, or didn't finish?

You should probably give BG2 a shot sometime. Since you've already played the first 10 minutes you should be more-or-less up to speed on the story, and since PS:T is still on the list the IE games aren't out of consideration for you.

Hmm..... I would also like to submit my list of all time favorite RPGs (First ten!)! Geronimo!

1) NWN2 : Mask of the Betrayer

2) Deus Ex: Machina

3) Vampire: The Masquerade - BloodLines

4) The Witcher

5) Planescape: Torment

6) System Shock 2

7) Betrayal In Antara

8) Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

9) Elder Scrolls: Morrowind

10) Mount and Blade: Warband

I made the list with cumulative points from story and the Game mechanics (Yes! Mechanics is important! Its a game!)...

I pushed TES games down because of complete freedom to choose the characterization which for moi was a bit too loose.... Deus Ex also had the same limitation but Awesome game is Awesome,

well "everyone" mean everyone :D...

1.BG 1
2.Witcher
3.TES:Oblivion
4.DA:O
5.Fallout
6.Fallout 2
7.Two World's
8.Fallout 3
9.Planescape: Torment
10.Fable: The Lost Chapters

I based my choices on story telling in this games. So if someone don't agree with me ok it's only my taste.

Always loved Mask of the Betrayer, even though you import from an old save the atmosphere and what it added was totally different from NWN2: OC.

Yup.. Me, too, loved it... Great story... They could have made it way better with more time..... its that game which missed the finish....

It was fast paced and was getting to the point where it could have actually become  a challenge to play if the devs had handeled it correctly....

And Yes... I love DnD implementation they have.... Its not perfect... But hey! Its a PC game!

Well, I prefered the second expansion of NWN over the OC, but I'm only taking into account main games. I'm not certain where they'd fit, but I'd guess somewhere above  Fallout 2 and below NWN2.

About Morrowind, I never finished it. I found the same problem every old RPG has: barely any voice acting, which is a big turn off for me.

And about BG2, I never play sequels without finishing the first part, and I didn't really like BG1 (mostly 'cos of the "barely any voice acting" thing). PS: T and Fallout were short which is why I finished them, if PS: T had full voice acting it would have been in the top 5

Funnily enough, I finished MotB just yesterday. The story, characters and dialogue were great but it was even more unbalanced than other epic level D&D campaigns (namely Throne of Bhaal and Hordes of the Underdark). There was far too much overpowered equipment and abilities and my PC was practically invincible by the end of the game - regenerate 18 hitpoints every round, 70 damage per attack, AC 50.

I have played far fewer rpg's than most here. But my top 5 is easy:

1.ME1

1.ME2

1.Oblivion

1.Fallout 3

1.The Witcher

Yes, they all have a number one before them, meaning I pretty much like them all equally, but for different reasons.

On topic: I can't help but get a little worried about TW2, as Cd projekt is shooting for the moon with this one. The more I read, the more I find they are trying to implement. And really, its only been 2.5 to 3 yrs of development.

In comparison, DA2 looks far more conservative. I don't mean that as a slight either. It just seems Bioware is building from an established foundation while CD Projekt is reinventing nearly everything.

It scares me.... :(

I think tehey are building on what they learned with the 1st one. It wont be reinventing a wheel. Different approach in some cases but I wouldnt worry about that. What is great about their developement is the proper tools they buit. New engine. TSOOD. I always say that proper tools for the proper job, preperation are the great lump of success. And from what I hear they are doing it right.
On the oter hand, please stay scared and doubtful, so when TW2 will come out you will be overwhelmingly surprised by the vast world of wonders before you ;)

Hopefully my video card won't explode when I crank all the graphic settings on high. I should be fine though.  TW2 is definately shaping up to be the most visually stunning RPG to date.

its true.. .DnD games in NWN always had had these problems... Otherwise you would never have any satisfaction of winning with a gimped build like 5M/10W/10Sor/5RDD

Very interesting assessment of Dragon Age sexuality at 21:08 of this interview

I wonder if Bioware will rethink the presentation of sex in DA-2

I agree about what slimgrin said earlier in that Witcher 2 is bordering on unbelievable in its ambition. I have bad experience of unreigned ambition, it doesn't tend to bring in good results. In comparison BioWare seems to have an extremely tangible, believable, effective set of added goals for DA2. 1.) Try new things with the framed narrative and the personality system 2.) Create a more distinct graphical style 3.) Make the combat more responsive.

From what I've seen they're steadily fullfilling all those three goals. Nothing in their vision strikes me as taking a bite too large to swallow, though I can't really say the same about Witcher 2. If Witcher 2 reaches all their respective, lofty goals, I'm willing to consider it a small miracle.
