Anyone else think the new look of the darkspawn isn't very scary compared to the first game?

To me they look like something from the original He-Man cartoon.

I think they look alright. I wouldn't call them scary, but I don't think the darkspawn from Origins were scary either. They just look like Dragon Age's generic orc-like creatures. Which is fine, because every fantasy needs their orc-like creatures.

They look absolutely nothing like their DA:O counterparts. I understand changing the art design but they don't look like the creatures we were introduced to and wear totally different armour.

They scared me... I really liked the ones that were men. Thought they were perfect.

Well, someone said that a..German magazine, I believe, stated that the darkspawn would only be involved in the first part of the game, in Lothering. That said, I hate their armor. I hope they change at least that. Their actual faces and stuff seem more like what Darkspawn are supposed to look like though.

I hope they're better than this. I remember the first time you faced an ogre in Origins and thinking "That thing is going to own me" *which it did*.
now they look kinda tamed down.

I think it might be to enhance their skeletal look. We don't know if they'll look exactly like this in the final product anyway, although I suspect they'll look like something close. Speaking of dentists, I don't care how weird clean teeth look on monsters, as long as Hawke gets them I'll be one happy camper.

You all recall the TV series, 'Firefly' and the movie, 'Serenity'?
The critters in that (I've forgotten the name) had similar backgrounds as DarkSpawn... but those creatures had once been humans who were subsequently driven insane, and ripped/scarred their own faces.
DarkSpawn are, according the game, 'spawned', so they need not look as close to the original.
Still, I have to admit, these 'new' critters don't have the same fear factor...maybe a reskin would do it? Something which obviously says 'corruption'.
I suppose the new game will feature some level of interaction w/ DS beyond merely slaughtering them... so the developers felt they 'needed' more of a face for emotional impact (ie, conversations, etc). DA:O models, which pretty much look like burnt skulls w/ fangs and eyes, don't have a lot of emotional range.
Taking an artistic eye to the issue, I suggest:
1) a gaunt, skullish face, one that might even be 'human', with corruption, boils, scars, and dark stains as 'skin'. If you look at photographs of people who have suffered a bad case of anthrax, leprosy, or syphillis, you might get an idea of what I'm talking about.
2) darkening the skin tone adds extra menace. Pale, pinkish skin reduces it. If any developer cares to read player posts, then here's my pitch: at the very least, darken and corrupt the skin.
3) there's no reason NOT to have fangs or serrated teeth on DS. These new models look like humans with the lips removed. Grotesque, yes, but not as worrisome as a critter that is all teeth and attitude.
4) the new models feature chainmail coifs. Why would a DS take the time or trouble to make chainmail? The ones we were introduced to would either loot from human corpses, or make their own crude imitations of human/dwarven gear.

I've said it several times, and I'll say it again "dock those bulbous noses, darkspawn don't need noses, nostrils will do, and sharpen those teeth, flat teeth aren't scary, they're not herbivores after all." Fix these two issues and I shall be satisfied.

I hate that they changed the Darkspawn. They just ruined a piece of their continuity. You can't just go and change the looks of one of the most important "races" in a universe. What if George Lucas had changed how the stormtroopers looked?

I don't think making evil monsters look like people with heavy skin disorders is going to help the game's PR, JHByrne

Also can we get some unique models please? They all look identical. In this day and age..

Zylas I can see it working for their PR
"Be safe kids, wear a condom or become a DARKSPAWN!"
Mr. T could do the ad.

They look like Locust from Gears of Wars. I like the way the darkspawn looked in the Ostagar cutscene. This looks like some undead warrior group.

I don't know Griffin, it would work better if they used politicians as models for darkspawn then

They're not darkspawn anymore. They're chalkspawn. I thought the darkspawn had you know, blighted, corrupted, nasty dark looking skin. These hurlocks look like they jumped into Tony Montana's coke pile and rolled around for a bit.
Seriously, in The Calling, when the Wardens develop the Taint, it corrupts and turns their skin all dark and nasty, not chalky and white. I'm sure they'll find a way to retcon that too..
"Oh but these are darkspawn, not ghouls!" Meh- these new hurlocks look too human to me and not enough monster. They'd make fine advanced stage ghouls but they're no darkspawn.
And thats not even touching on the bizarre S&M spikey metal fetish everyone in DA2 has going on...

Maybe they're darkspawn that fell into a vat of bleach or something?

I liked the old design better and less super 'blocky' armor. it looks shoddy to me.

I like the way the art style is going so far. Frankly, I'm kind of sick of darkspawn so I could care less how they look. There is no real canon they have to stick to as far as art style goes, it's just aesthetics, and aesthetics > lore. not kidding.

It's not just the Darkspawn that got heavily redesigned. Take a gander at the Quanari's new look. Personally I like how the Qunari look in DA2, but still, it's hard to completely explain why they look so different. As for the Darkspawn, they look like comic relief to me. Like Droids in Star Wars.
