Dragon Age: Origins was a huge success for BioWare. The developer fused time-tested fantasy elements with their award-winning RPG formula to create a rich, compelling gaming experience. Nobody understands the need to improve upon a good idea better than the Dragon Age 2 team, however. In this video interview with creative director Mark Darrah and lead designer Mike Laidlaw, key elements such as the new main character, the game's narrative style, and the changes to the console version are discussed.
- The Free Marches is more of a political place; many Ferelden refugees from the Blight reside there.
- Because the setting is a place without a unified govenment, it's a place where Hawke can rise to power.
- Hawke is like a legend in his/her own time.
COMBAT:
- On the consoles, the game is "extremely" reactive. Still has tactics, but you press a button, and something happens.
- On the PC, a little more tactical, you can examine battlefield and make choices. Keep some of the reactivity.
- Strategy and tactics is still important, but they want you to "fight like a Spartan". Combat is "faster". Everyone gets to the fighting faster when you begin battle.
- Still have only the three classes--this time, they want each class to feel different. A warrior is like an unstoppable tank/killing machine on the field, a rogue is quick, ninja-like, and a mage is like "field artillery" and blows away everyone from a range. They're trying to avoid overlapping with roles and abilities.
STORY-TELLING:
- Framed narrative; the narrators discussing the legend from the future. They react to the choices you make after you've made them. (They bring up a good point, that in DAO, you wait until the very end of the game to hear what the point to everything you've been doing is. Now, you're interacting with the future--sort of--throughout the game.) They compare it to The Usual Suspects.
DAO and DA2:
- Now, I'm not sure what they mean, but they say there'll be two "really, really" cool parts where you get to see the world as you changed it in the first game.
- They say they have a canon that newcomers play. (I wish they'd start saying "default" instead of "canon".)
