Rant mode on:

Okay, so lemme get this straight. In DA:O, we were forced to play the lead role of a Grey Warden who is tasked to prevent a World-Destroying Blight. In order to do so we ventured into a Tower in the middle of a lake to recruit either Mages - a potential ticking time bomb that could turn into abominations whenever they use blood magic - or Templars - arrogant SOB's who believe magic is evil -, crossed through a miserable dream world or "The Fade", Got (optional) help from a member of a warrior tribal race, fought against a tyrant named Loghain, and killed a ton of monsters called Darkspawn.

And now in DA:II, we are forced to play in the shoes of a commoner - a FARM BOY, no less -, with a sister who can use magic, and a survivor of his village's destruction from the Darkspawn. And upon fleeing his village (and if I read it right in the announcements), he is destined to become the single most important person in the entirety of The Dragon Age!!

I mean, who does this guy think he is? Rand Al' Thor?!

...Oh wait.

Rant mode off:

In all seriousness, anyone got the same impression when they saw the early info on the sequel?

I just don't think what the Warden did was all that interesting or impressive. I really did think that DA would have taken you beyond just beating killing an archdemon and to the eradication of the blight, to some real closure. But all you did was go around, gather an army that could only serve as a distraction, then killed a big dragon, which only you could apparently kill.

I thought DA was a great game, but I really disliked the direction and decisions that went into the plot. I really hate games were your antagonist is basically a force of nature. It makes for a very uninteresting story.

Frankly, if Hawke does anything about the nature of magic, or the blight, he's going to do something a lot more important than what the Warden did, which was basically scare away some darkspawn by killing their leader.

I don't see any pattern here... in fact I'm not even sure what you're trying to say. =/

Your description of DA:O is very different from your description of DA:2... in fact, the way you phrased it they seem roughly opposite, kinda? So is the pattern that the two games' plots are nothing like each other?

That's good, right? As far as story goes, new is usually better than old.

Good to see such a positive thread in these forums :)

It was a pun. The "pattern" word is from The Wheel of Time.

Did Bioware announce Hawke's background when I wasn't looking or are people jumping to conclusions based on Hawke living in Lothering for some unknown amount of time before it was destroyed?

Pattern being, you are always the miracle bringer from humble beginnings?

I guess the title is kind of waaaayy off. What I'm trying to say is if some people noticed the DA series being closely similar to the Wheel of Time? If I'm not mistaken, there was a thread back before DA:O's release that already covered the issue. But after reading the announcements of DA2's plot and remembering Rand having the same beginning...

Hailing from humble origins and then becoming important is old. So. Old.

@Gaxhung: Something like that...but I guess that depends on how people will play their own Hawke
