Hi
During conversation with pc or npc, there is a massive pause and stutter(2~3 seconds). It starts with a brief pause and it gets worse as I keep playing the game without restarting. When dialog option pops at the bottom of the screen, FPS will drop to 1 and pause for 2 ~ 3 seconds. If I restart the game, the problem will be gone but it always comes back in 10 minutes. Dialog in lothering, ostagar and denerim are the worst.
I searched this forum and google about the problem but couldn't find any effective solutions. I even returned my laptop and got brand new one for this problem a month ago.

My laptop spec
Asus G73JH
Intel I7 720qm(1.6 ghz) quad core
8 gigs ddr3 ram
7200 rpm 16mb cache 500gb SATA hard drive
ATI mobility HD 5870 1gb dedicated
DirectX Ver.11
Nvidia Physx 909.02.03 (one that comes with Dragon age installation cd)
Windows 7 64bit
The laptop is one month old

Temperature
55C (Cpu Temp) , 75C (Gpu Temp) when playing Dragon age

Things I have tried
Tweaked core affinity
Updated hardware drivers
Reinstall Dragon age
Play without any mods and dlcs
Play on minimum setting
Turn off all 3rd party applications even windows defender
Used CFF explorer to tweak memory usage on Dragon age application
Vsync and triple buffering
Defrag hard disk
Play on dx9 (tweaked shortcut)

Dragon age dlcs installed
Warden's keep
Stone prisoner
Return to ostagar
Darkspawn chronicles
Leliana's song
Awakening

8 days ago, DABhand helped me to fix the issue by changing power setting to high performance but the problem came back again. Please help!! I love this game but this problem makes the game unplayable. I know my system is not "overkill" for this game but it sure is above recommended specs. So, I am guessing it is either software or the game itself.

There was no mention of what audio device you have(I can only guess inboard chipset), have you tried updated audio drivers, or disabling audio cleanup, or Dolby digital sound settings (if it has them)?

This removed a major sound lag problem with the first ostagar battle intro, and the sound clipping when in conversation is virtually non existent now.

Thank you for the reply, Outamyhead.
I have realtek audio with latest driver installed.
I think sound works fine. I have never experienced sound cliping or lag from sound. It is the dialog text at the bottom of the screen that stutters.

Edit- My mistake. I think i wasn't clear with what my problem is. It is not the sound. It is the dialog text option that stutters. When dialog text option appears at the bottom of the screen, Fps goes down to 1 and temporarily freeze for 2~3 seconds. Sorry i  didnt clearly mention my problem with original topic article. I am trying to edit the original post but it won't let me>.<

In CCC, have you tried to disable Adaptive Anti-Aliasing and/or to set Catalyst AI to Standard or disabled it? If available, try also to disable CCC LCD Overdrive.

Hello, JackM. Thank you for the reply.
I disabled catalyst and ran dragon age. Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem.
And for CCC LCD overdrive..um.. where is that option?^^;

EDIT- never mind. I found it. it's already disabled.

Hello philjoo, i have the same problem, when i start multiple dialogues with the characters and other people the game starts to shutter and i have lag when i need to start a dialogue and the fps drops fast at 2 fps(monitored with msi afterburner) for ~2 seconds and then i comes to normal. I noticed this "bug" is permanently when you start the dialogue with Sten. You click on Sten and he says " Yes", in that moment then the fps drops at 2 when he says Yes.My temp. for the GPU is 79C.

Hi Calin Pandurescu. Thanks for the input. Wow, the problem you described is exactly identical with my problem. I am kind of relieved that I am not the only one suffering from this problem. heh. So I guess it has nothing to do with my laptop. Maybe the game itself has the problem.

Strangely, I never had this problem during first playthrough under the patch 1.02. Perhaps patches after 1.02 have caused this.

@philjoo: Don't worry you're not the only one with this problem. And yes, the game has a problem, deep in the game's "heart". I don't think that bioware fill fix this, because on march 2011 it comes Dragon Age 2, and i think they know are "working" on developing that game, for Origins it "time over"

When I get in certain conversations, the game chunders to a halt. Eventually, I have to bring up task manager just to kill it. The only consistent thing I've noticed is that there is always a fire animation going on in the scene. I can't play the game anymore, because I can't progress through the dialogue of one scene.

Here's my post about it: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/3269608/1#3282278

I feel yor pain, Saturnineage!!! because i know how annoying this can be. In dragon age, player has to make conversations many many times. And experiencing this problem everytime you make a conversation is real pain.
Anyway I think I may have found the culprit. I think it has something to do with the text option being transparent. When I changed my resolution from 1920x1080 to 1650x1050, text was no longer transparent and stop stuttering. I am going to play again and see if this really is the cause.

Edit- Never mind. It doesn't work >.<

I've noticed Sten's dialog always lags, even if every other character's dialog is fine and stutter-free.  The stuttering started when I bought Leliana's Song.  Patch 1.04 made it a little better, but there's still a discernable lag whenever I talk to him.  If I talk to another character right after, the lag vanishes, go figure.

I know this is VERY VERY VERY Late post...but I have this problem also, I just mute the dialogue volume, and no lags during conversations...It's a miracle, it's so simple...BUT it has a big disadvantage though, you're gonna see the people move they're mouths like some idiot :))) I wish there was a way to manipulate this between muted and not actually muted...Haha, very redundant

Ha I have the same exact comp as the OP and have the Sten (and only Sten) lag. I even made a vid. It's very annoying.

I hate necroing threads but I figured I'd add my experience so to hopefully provide a solution to anyone having this problem.

For me, I'd played through the game (50 hours) with no problem. I cranked up the game for another playthrough a while later and lo and behold - crippling 'lag' during dialogue. I did everything I could think of to fix it - turn down graphics settings, download new video drivers, disable sound, etc

Then, a little while later again I was looking through my DLC and noticed a mod that I had created when trying to learn how to make custom content was loaded. So, I thought to myself, "that shouldn't be there...". I turned it off (along with the demo tutorial) and forced a load of a saved game and, much to my delight, all dialogue lag was gone, never to be seen since.

My advice, therefore, is to check your DLC (which often includes fan mods as well as Bioware stuff). Disable everything and see if that helps. If it does you can re-enable them one at a time to find the problem. Hope this helps.

I don't feel bad necroing this thread at all. It's been another year now. I'm just revisiting DA:O because I never finished the game in the first place, I'm stuck at the post-dual dialogues with Loghain. THE VERY END OF THE GAME!!! I spent I don't know how many hours on this game, and at the very end, I can't get through it.

I had no problems before, there were very minor and random dialogue lags before entering the dual, but almost noticeable. In fact, everything pre-Loghain dual was fine, I was playing with the max settings with no lags anywhere.

But at the very end of the game. BAM.

My game is updated to 1.05, I've got the lastest drivers, etc etc. Not overheating. I tried disabling all the DLCs, in fact clearing the addin folder. Nothing.

Help will be appreciated, but I'm not hoping for anything at this point. Just disappointed I can't finish the game even ONCE.

Necro'ing threads is frowned upon, and bumping threads is down-right discouraged. If you wish other users to help you troubleshoot, please consult the Read First thread pinned towards the top of this forum, and then create a new thread with the information specified.
