I posted here as I would like to hear the opinions of other players.

I would like to know what you think:

1. Makes for a good area design?

2. Makes for a bad area design?

and what is your favorite area in any mod/D&D game?

My favorites are the inn in Targos in IWD 2, it felt warm and the dogs by the fire made it seem welcoming, and Fort Locke in the OC for the lightiing and the way the fort itself seemed right.

I think there are two parts to it really. One is the visual side (including audio) and the other is functionality. Functionality especially is something that I think can be improved in many mods, with very large areas to travel but nothing much to do in them. I often get the feeling that they're just not filled up enough.

Hard to say what area is my fav for all D&D games but for the NWN2 ones, I must say I am very fond of the Mulsantir Gates area for MotB. It feels wet, kinda gloomy and chilly. Still inviting and beautiful. The Astral Plane area is also wonderful.

I'll tell you what I really don't like in areas. I've seen it in a few mods (more NWN than NWN2) but the main offender is SOZ.

Pointless, stupid retracking.

The SOZ side-quest the Thayan merchant keeps sending you on is really abusive. But another example is a one-map area. Without going into too much detail, the map is layed out like a clockface; you start at 1 or so; you go to 12 and are told about your quest. You then have to make your way around counterclockwise to 3, and then go back to 12 - except you can't go straight, you have to go back the way you came. But not content with that bit of puppetry, the designers now send you through a maze to the middle to meet the big baddie - only to send back to 12 again - and then finally back to the middle again so you can leave.

I mean seriously, I feel like they're laughing at me.   Posted Image
