Well, henchmen probably isn't the right word, I realize they're more than that in NWN2 but I don't know how they're usually called here.
;)

I feel a bit overwhelmed with the choices of 'henchmen' because I'd hate to miss any side quests and stories. Do I have to pay attention as to who is in my party at any given time? Can you give me some advice?

I mostly care about Neeshka, Qara and Khelgar Ironfist but I wouldn't want to miss any of the other one's stories either (I heard some have more background than others though). So far I get on pretty well with Neeshka and have currently already advanced her story to the point where I promised to help her break into the Collector's house in the Blacklake District. As for Khelgar Ironfist on the other hand, I wasn't able to improve the relation to him. I learned about his trials but I didn't get him to trust others more yet. And I often had to leave him behind because I didn't want to miss a rogue and a sorcerer in my party and the third companion was often determined by the game. I'd be willing to make a sacrifice and go on adventure without Qara or Neeshka *if* I knew it was worth it to take one of the other companions with me instead (in terms of story/side quests).

So can you tell me which companions I should keep around for which parts of the story and how to advance my PC's relation to Khelgar?

Thanks!
:)

Do what I do and use the console and up the party limit to 6 :) You don't need to freit as much as to who to take. Sand, Bishop and Casavir don't have side quests pre say, neither do Gith Girl or Shandra. Qara's comes out of left field even if she isn't in your party. Neeshka and Khelgar's you know about. Grobnar has a side quest and Ammon dose to some dagree as well.

What part of the game are you up to? Have you met the dwarf scouts yet?

Take Zhjaeve to Arvahn, Sand-Qara to Port Llast... in general, Sand & Qara, Neeshka-Elanee dislike each other.

If you're evil, take along Bishop as much as possible.

Khelgar seems to have the most possible character growth and an interesting personal quest, but his story is closely tied to the main plot. You have to raise influence with him whenever you can and take him to anything that involves the Ironfist dwarves. The one main plot scene he's in he seems to appear no matter what, but you need very high influence to finish his quest.

I was kind of disappointed with Qara story-wise, because most of her story was cut. She's a great arcane caster though, and I'd suggest keeping influnce with her high.

The only other character whose story I saw was Sand, and he figures into a main plot segment. I don't want to spoil anything if you haven't got there yet, but high influence with Sand is important during "Act II."

Sadly, I didn't really like Casavir. Almost all of his personality and character was cut. Bishop is interesting for an evil PC, but gets pissed off if you help anyone.

Grobnar? Don't bother bringing him on anything but his personal mission unless you like a laugh. Although some don't really like him, he can be pretty strange sometimes. The main reason to bring him anywhere is to increase his influence, which becomes important at just the wrong time.

Ammon? The party size increases to 4 when you get him, so he can quickly become a staple even when he isn't required if you're okay with his "evil for the greater good" thing.

Overall, I think Khelgar has the best story but is mostly only a tank for gameplay. Sand and Ammon have some interesting interaction during the main plot, and are decent characters for gameplay but have no real side mission that I remember.

I only just reached Act II (at least I think it's Act II, the last Act ended with me freeing Shandra and now I'm accused of having murdered a whole village).
My character is good and even though I sometimes think evil characters fun, Bishop is getting a bit on my nerves.
But thanks for the tip!
Any advice on how I can advance Khelgar's quest?

And I might have lowered my influence on Khelgar one or two times for agreeing with Neeshka, does that mean I might not be able to finish his quest?

You're past the early chances to raise influence with Khelgar. There will be a lot more later when you're sent to talk with the Ironfists.

Everyone has little things pop up in conversations that can gain or lose a point. There's no way to get them all in one playthrough without cheating up the partylimit. It's almost as if they want you to play it again.

But since you're a wise gamer with good taste (proven by your presence here), you will be playing it again so don't worry about catching everything the first time.

If you haven't done the dwarf scouts go do that as soon as you have the chance. This brings out of Khelgar's backstory to light and you can gain quite a bit of easy infulance with him. You get +4 for saying he should keep the guntlets you find :)

Most of the main story-advancing elements are spoon-fed so you won't miss them. For example, a character who will join you later simply has to be with you for several areas or it won't let you travel to them; when you're sent to see the Ironfists, they won't receive you without Khelgar; etc.

A couple of sneaky ones might get past you, though.

After a cutscene where you'll see a plot against Qara unfolding, be sure to take her north of Neverwinter into Luskan territory a couple times.

Be sure to take Grobnar on a whirlwind tour of a Goblin Cave you'll find.

He does come in handy with that Archives quest, he'll provide you with the right answer to at least one of the quizzes, and the most difficult one at that. Personally I like having him around, he usually takes Shandra's place later in the game. His Bard abilities, especially his Inspirations, come in very handy at times. And he makes a pretty good Archer.

I didn't know that he contributed... Posted Image I'm usually in for the story, so I bring 1-2 favorite characters and 1 (later 2) power monsters (usually Qara and Khelgar with ridiculous gear, who also happen to fit the "favorite" criterion) and don't bother much with combat tactics. If I convince myself to play NWN2 OC again, I'll try working with him. It makes the end of Act III much easier...

I just wish that his personal quest was more than just a laugh and a bonus item. The fight just to get the bonus item actually nailed me, even with my "UBER" characters. I had to reload an old save and come back later...

Grobnar can also Ironskin you for an important event where you're all alone if your influence is high enough.  But you have to be perfect with him, which includes getting all the Archive questions right without his help;  he still has to be there to be impressed, though.
