One of my characters let both Liara and Ashley know that he found them attractive, and sometime during the game there was a scene where the two had a little fight and then made Shepard choose.  However, on my second playthrough on that character, I once again let them both know and yet the choice never popped up.  Liara was the one who ended up being the one, without the game ever giving me a choice between the two, and Ashley never flipped out or anything.  The last I heard from Ashley on the subject was something like "You've got something to look forward to when this Saren thing is over."  What's the deal?

I know that Ashley somehow knows when you've been sweet-talking Liara, because one time I talked to Ashley and she was all lovey-dovey to me, and then I ran straight to Liara and she was the same.  But then I had a game crash or something and had to reload, and this time without thinking about it I went to Liara first.  She went ga-ga over me for a while, and then I went to Ashley, expecting the same stuff as before.  But this time she clammed up.  The only difference was that I'd gone to Liara first.

Did I perhaps "go too far" with Liara before I reached a point at which the "choose" scene appeared?  That's the only reason I can think of that the choice did not appear.

Sounds like you chose a wrong response to Ashley, maybe even the one that makes her just be friends and kills the romance in the beginning, but still allows full talks.

I might have. Is it one of the options in the middle? I was alternating between top and middle. But Shepard never said anything like "I just want to be friends," and Ashley never stopped talking about how much she wanted me.

At some point late in the relationship with Ashley, if you respond encouragingly to Liara, Ashley simply drops out of the picture without a ripple. It's likely a bug.

On the talk about aliens I think it is, one of the first with Ashley if you respond with the middle left option, something like, don't question my orders, then she continues talking to you but without the romance. It drops you into the friend category or the female Shepard options. Sad to say but I have only done the two at once maybe 2 times, usually I decide who I want before I start to play, and when you consider I have OVER 10 complete plays 1-2 isn't much.

I think it did have to do with you going to Liara first the second time around
because you can get the ball rolling with Ashley & still start the romance with Liara right afterwards, but not vice versa
