I guessed before that the elves would look more like Na'avi based on how it seems they're backtracking and redesigning the races based on the darkspawn look- so the new elves would work better as Shrieks now, I guess.
The thing that bothers me most with the new art is that its even less "original" than Origins. Origins was original because the elves weren't all lithe with huge ears. It was still fantasy but it was grounded and had a sense of reality. IMO, it just seems like in their attempt to "amp things up" in DA2, they're falling back into your typical generic High Fantasy visual archetypes.

I'm hoping that the artist just sort of goofed up on the female elf's nose, since the male elf's isn't like that. This would surely be better than the alternative, because it looks pretty weird to me.
The arm thing seems to be a problem for all of the species in that picture, so that's probably just the artist.
I liked the ears fine the way they were. I don't like big ears on elves. Apparently many people disagreed with me on that, however.
I don't really like that they appear to be the same height as humans, either. I have no problem whatsoever with tall elves, but it seems strange because they hadn't been the same height before.
They are, however, still recognisably elves and don't look too bizarre. So that's a good thing.

While they remind me more of dog ears, I could live with it as long as that's it.
I'm somewhat curious on the qunari female, Didn't think they let them out of their city buildings.

Hmmm looks like elves aren't really smaller than humans anymore ? merely thinner.
Images are not necessarily to scale.

It's the meaningless wording that worries me there. "are not necessarily to scale" doesn't really say the aren't to scale, merely that they may or may not be. Which makes you wonder why use such vague response if the elf size isn't being changed in some way -- "it's not to scale, elves are the same size they're in DAO" would be just as easy to write and much more straightforward. Or it'd be even easier to make them to scale to begin with, because why send false signals if they aren't?phaonica wrote...

The kicker is, they actually do have separate rigs for each race in DA2, with ability to give them different animations and whatnot. So if anything the technical limitations no longer apply, nowhere as much as they did in DAO. Which yes, does make the contrast between the stated intentions and the outcome quite funny, in a little sad way.Corker wrote...
And what I'm saying is that they're not even really different types of humans. They are all well within the Western beauty standard. The women are all hourglasses, the men are all muscular. That the elf is a C cup instead of a D doesn't impress me all that much.
I know that they're limited by the animating skeletons and issues like armor and clothes (although they managed some fat(tish) human men, like Llyod, in DAO), but it just seems silly to show four variations of movie star good looks and claim that they are "different standards of beauty."

*nods* And the heck of it is... while I think they'd be very very silly not to include a *smidge* more ethnic variety in the hairstyles at least, I don't really expect a mass market product like this to really indulge other beauty standards. It's not safe for their bottom line.
But please don't offer me a brownie, a chocolate chip brownie, a walnut brownie and (gasp!) a blondie and tell me, smiling, that you serve a full range of desserts. People like brownies. Heck, I like brownies and I'm happy there's at least a selection of them. (Walnuts, please!) But there is world with pecan pie and ice cream and strawberry shortcake and lemon bars out there, too. So just admit you're a brownie shop and move on with life.

Edit: Also, if the Dalish get tattoos when they come of age and Cammen doesn't have one because he's yet to become a full hunter and be considered of age, why doesn't anyone comment on Gheyna's lack of tattoos? Wouldn't that mean that she'd be considered a child in the eyes of the clan, too, so why is she being so...difficult about Cammen's similar child status?

I hate to admit it but some girls will only be with a guy that they know can provide for a family. *shrug*
It's like if there were two sixteen-year-olds going out and one of them wanted to get married and the other insisted she couldn't because he was too for her to marry and ignoring the fact that she was just that young.

This is from what I can remeber from my histroy class on hunter-gatherers.
A Dalish clan since it cant farm, must forage and hunt for their food, or trade for it. That keeps their numbers down since there is no surplus of food, or post-harverst time meaning that population wont increase very rapidly. Compared to Urban settings the Dalish always being on the move, and other factors would keep a normal clan small.
Unitl humans started farming our population was very small on this globe. After surplus food allowed for diversification of jobs and free time then population picks up.

I can see what you're saying here but this comes from the assumption that Gheyna is too young to be planning for a family already since it's obvious she hasn't gotten her vallaslin (Blood Writing) yet. But in her defense, to plan for a family before you're considered "old enough" and whether to continue a relationship you worry won't get you anywhere in the future isn't uncalled for, even for someone who isn't "of-age".Sarah1281 wrote...

So, elf! A young Zevran in Antiva, very nice though I would expect him to have some tattoos visible.
