No, at some point in the romance you can ask Alistair if being an elf/dwarf bothers him. For an elf and dwarves under certain conditions he says 'Especially because of that' and for the other time he tells dwarves 'And here I was worried that I was too tall.' Those lines both spectacularly fail to actually address any real elf/human dwarf/human issues and so you'd better RP it as just insecurity and not looking for a serious discussion or it comes off as really insensitive of him. Plus, a lot of elf players get creeped out by that line because of all the elf fetishization going on in Thedas. Still, the other LI don't even have that.ArawnNox wrote...

Yeah, the fact that three LI outright in Origins ignore your species and the fourth one only has a dismissive answer when you ask really seems...lacking. Romancing a different species should feel like a bigger deal than it does.Eudaemonium wrote...
I actually agree with Corker in that I'd really liked the species power imbalance to be drawn out with regards to any elven LI in DA2 (and I hope there is one). I don't really mind which background though. I think City is *more* likely given context, but exploring the history of a Dalish elf who isn't Velanna would be interesting, though I have to admit I'm rather fond of her in her own way.

I mean Zev and a Human Noble?
Leliana and a Dalish Elf?
Alistair and a City Elf?
All of those have some deep issues that should have been touched on.

I am more optimistic about them doing that for DA2. In Origins you'd need to address any issues with two different species (dwarves for everyone, human for Zevran, and elves for the others) and possibly mages. For DA2 you'd just need to have any issues be a part of the romance since Hawke's human.Giggles_Manically wrote...

So maybe the reduction in the variables of Hawke's origin, will allow for a more connected and personal story later on?Sarah1281 wrote...

I found the Dalish pretty bland & boring but love the City Elf Origin. It feels so incomplete, though, without ever actually getting to see the alienage & all your friends/family without it being a ghetto after the epilogue. Probably the most striking thing for me was that at some point (I think after you save the Alienage the first time), you can promise Shianni to get some drinks sometime. Then, of course, this is completely forgotten about and never expanded upon. It was a real shame, too, because the City Elf origin (and all of the others, really) make you legitimately care for the characters and their plight. Before I knew better, the return to the Alienage on my first character (City Elf) was the thing I was looking forward to the most. I was quite dissapointed.
I actually liked the return to the Alienage with my CE character. The whole 'get two bottles' discussion wih Shianni is really something that's expected to happen post-game, like Oghren's promise to go back to Felsi once everything is done. It happens post-ending, so you never really see it. I mean, all it'd be would be you and Shainni sitting around a table getting paraletic and talking about all the misadventures you've had. Entertaining, but not really end-game drama material.

I found that rather creepy. I'm not *certain*, but I think he says something different if you've already slept with him (so he's declaring his love rather than propositioning you). I might be wrong there since I only did that on my latest CE playthrough. Leliana's dialogue (though its for elven PCs in general, not just LIs) is much better in that you can point out the problems with her attitude. Its nice to be able to point out that fetishisation and over-glorification are also forms of racism, since that often gets passed over in a lot of things.

I think I might have to play a mage Hawke, particularly with the Templar role in Kirkwall and the possible-apostatehood. haven't decided on the gender yet, though, and I do so love playing Rogues these days.

That's the closest you get with Leliana, and you get that as an elf regardless of LI-status.
I didn't particularly like that tree. The only answers available to your elf warden all came across as aggressivly racist. Sure it works fairly well if your elf has 'issues' with humans, but to me it keeps sounding like you're coming down on Lel for the whole thing then get to forgive her in a rather condencending manner when she appologises for the 'misunderstanding'.

As far as I know, Alistair only says "of course not" if you ask him if being an elf matters to him. The VO notes give the direction "warm." Others have said they don't like his "especially because of that" line, but I find it cute. I see it as his way of being reassuring and even self-deprecating, because he's not exactly had an easy time of it just because he's human.Eudaemonium wrote...

Alistair has a very nice interaction with a Dalish PC, when you ask about Duncan and he asks about funeral practices (video here). Morrigan also has a fairly complimentary interaction. Neither of these are LI-specific, of course, but they're good icebreakers. Since we're on the subject, I recorded Leliana's Dalish dialogues here, and here with slightly different dialogue choices.
Of course, the more race-specific diaogue there could have been, the better.

I did really like some of the different reactions that there were. The shopkeep in Ostagar trying to tell you to go fetch his armour added quite a bit to the feeling of bewilderment/being out of place for me, for instance.
As to the elven companions in DA II question ... I still feel like we're a bit behind on elven male companions. That said, I would like a female elf NPC who is a warrior (and not an archer), not at all silly or flighty, and not a romance option. I wouldn't be completely adverse to it if she were, I guess, but it seems rather common that there is at least one romancable female elf.
City elf or Dalish, I'm not too particular, although I think that city elf would probably make more sense (although not knowing the plot, I can't say for certain).
If a male elf the warrior thing would work for that, too, or possibly a mage. I'm less picky about that as there have been less of them (or certainly less notable ones). As far as personality goes, 'different from what we've seen before' is what I'd prefer.

Yes! Something like that would have been great. I could see how it might have gotten a bit awkward depending on how you introduced some of them (probably best to avoid mentioning that Zev tried to kill you

Thanks! I was thinking that his head was at a sort of odd angle and in shadow, so it probably wasn't a very good shot of him. I've never taken very many screenshots in the origins for some reason, though. Maybe next time.

My m!Surana just about lost it there. "Why, yes, I am an elf. I can also make you explode in a fountain of blood and flesh. Which of these facts do you suppose is more noteworthy?"
He asked Anora if she'd want 'a strong king,' knowing full well she'd turn him down, just to see why. When she said that the people would never accept a mage (not an elf), he gave her his support.

Although this line tops off the most sinister line for me in the game:
Warden: Excuse me but I wanted you to be awake for this.
Guard: NO PLEASE WAIT!
Warden: Murder Knifes guards throat.
Soris: That was cold cousin.
Tops any renegade line in Mass Effect.

On my 2nd CEF run where I was less caught up in gameplay and roleplaying more, I chose the dialogue option "I was nervous until I saw you." His response melted me. It was a lot harder to see him die after that.
So, in short, she wore his wedding ring throughout the game.

LOL now I have to do that. I loved the knife throwing cut scene with the guard as female city elf. Then again I always find the shanking in DAO to be hilarious because the characters face is always so emotionless it makes them look even more like total psychopaths.Giggles_Manically wrote...

I admit, I didn't like Nesiara. I assume Nelaros is pretty similar, so I'd probably find him equally annoying - although, clearly, neither deserved what happened to them.

Ah, so that's what all that poison is for. I always wondered about it. (I really should play the origin through with a female character some time.)
Okay, screenshot (sadly not of blank-faced shanking, because I don't have any of those).

... I need more elves. My Dalish elf and my two elf mages I just sort of gave up on at some point, so it'd feel odd to post shots of them. They just didn't click for some reason. I wish making a character I like wasn't such a roll of the dice for me.
I'm thinking I should probably try more different classes and specialisations, things like that. Make sure they're interesting and different. Maybe an archery specialised rogue who actually does a lot of rogue stuff for the Dalish. Not sure about the mage.

I actually found her far more annoying than him. Plus, you know, he dies to save you and organizes a rescue when you're kidnapped. That certainly earns him more points than Nesiara just waiting to be saved (I'm not saying there was anything else she could have done so it's not a strike against her, more a point in Nelaros' favor).I admit, I didn't like Nesiara. I assume Nelaros is pretty similar, so I'd probably find him equally annoying - although, clearly, neither deserved what happened to them.
