Oh I love the Dalish, I can't imagine why more people don't play them. Maybe it's elf hate or something?Like I said I never finished the game and it has been awhile, but it seemed like even when I clicked on a tree in the city to start a conversation with her (I hated that conversation system by the way, one of the reasons I haven't finished Awakening yet even though there is a lot of good in it too), I had dialogue that specifically mentioned my views as a Dalish. In fact I didn't find Velanna nearly as b***** as everyone else on here does and I wondered if that was because my Warden was Dalish as well. I don't remember her saying anything nasty to him, but again I never finished so maybe I am missing some things. ^^ I had her in my party the whole time because I actually liked her (probably because I am biased for the Dalish though
).
Oh, interesting. Alas, Kara won't actually recruit Velanna, I know that already. She's not going to risk Keeper lore to the Joining, and will send Velanna packing to the clans.
I love the Dalish too, they absolutely fascinate me. I think a disconnect with the origin is the main reason for the lack of play - it seems to be one you either love or hate with very little inbetween emotion. Which makes me sad. Which is one reason why I committed myself to what will probably be a monstrous fic that explores the Dalish culture and what it means to be Dalish. I hope to convert the world to Dalish love!!

Yes, I got that far with Idun and Velanna says "I recognize you from the meeting of the clans." After that her dialogue seemed very similar to the usual, but I didn't get too far.Sandtigress wrote...

Do you know how happy you've made me? I haven't run my canon Dalish through Awakening yet (might next week) but I'm told that Velanna has next to no recognition for a Dalish Warden. That Kara will be recognized is great!
OK, I have only played Awakening once and I didn't even finish it (I need to do that before Witch Hunt), BUT the Warden I did play Awakening with is who I would consider my canon character, if I had to consider any of my characters canon (I love them all), and he was Dalish. When he met Velanna she certainly did recognize him as Dalish and in fact had quite a lot to say about the fact that he was Dalish at their first meeting.
Well! That's good. Poor Kara has suffered from me wanting to make good story choices for her, and being my most favoritest canon ever, I've been agonizing over it. That plus a shortage of time to play and migraines exacerbated by the game...she'll get there soon, I hope.
Thanks for that, very few people play Dalish it seems and so no one had discounted that rumor for me.

I'm hoping it brings out the emotion of the Tamlen encounter, and that horrid line he yells in your video.

Same here. *points to signature* It will be even a 90 - 100 chapter monster and I'm proud to be one of the few who writes a serious Dalish-playthrough ficlet. No bunnies and rainbows in there because it's DA after all, but lots and lots of Dalish culture stuff. I just love that.

When the Tamlen encounter happened I couldnt react.
Luckily I had a full party because I kept going "TAMLEN!?! WTH!"
The dialouge and encounter kicked me in the gut very hard. Literally I just sat there in shock.

So with this knowledge is anyone still surprised by the kick in the guts that the Tamlen encounter was? Anyone?
As for me, my brain fried for a few minutes, I was too shocked to game on. Seriously.

I always wonder what that week or two traveling alone with Duncan would be like. I'd suspect most Dalish wardens would be pretty depressed and feel out of their element after leaving their clan so suddenly. Not to mention that he/she would be getting sicker and sicker by the day. I know the game doesn't show this, but I suspect by the time they reach Ostagar the Dalish warden is probably on their last leg.

I also believe she tells you to leave her to her business and of course you can't so you end up confronting her anyway. And I believe at the end of that battle she says something like she can't continue fighting a fellow Dalish because how could the clans ever progress if they fought each other. That isn't exactly the quote, but it was something like that.

In one part of my fic my Warden does meet her clan again and receives cautious treament - some of her clan members are glad to see her and some are very bitter about her living in the outside world. She ends up trying to explain to her clan members that Tamlen became a ghoul and that there was no choice but to kill him - her explaination is not well received by several clan members. I also tried to deal with the fact that she was accompanied by a "flat ear" (Zev was with her) and have this color the picture that her former family had of her.
For fanfic writers I think the Dalish origin gives us a lot more room to play with our characters because you (the writer) can decide what your Warden's clan was like - did they hate shem and ostracize elves who even spoke to them or were they more tolerant and possibly even willing to trade with shemlen if the opportunity arose? The whole backstory of lost lore, lost homeland and lost gods adds that much more depth to the story.
And yes, Merilsell, Gaider is the master of plot twists and personal tragedy for characters.

I'd love to read a fic full of Dalish lore! XD I haven't written any fanfic for DA:O (though I have written fanfic for other fandoms before), but whenever I play a Dalish I always have this vivid story in my head. I actually like the disconnect between the Dalish origin and the rest of Ferelden. It really makes you feel like an outsider more than any other origin.

Well, if you're at all interested, here are my Fireside Tales. It's also on the Creative Community forum if you'd prefer that to read in than fanfiction.net. No obligations, I just don't have a nice signature tag like Mer does.

Very nice. You mean lines about the master telling Tamlen that the Warden ran and left him to die? So that's where he got that idea.Sandtigress wrote...

Writing about Dalish is fun (as long it is treated seriously, I can't stand stories in which the Dalish Warden knows everything about Ferelden and is friend with every human in the instant) Alas there are too few good stories out there to read, so that's why I started to write my own. This is what intrigued my so on the Dalish origin. Most found it lacking and disconnected compared to the other origins but thinking about it some more, maybe it was done deliberately this way. After all you are an outsider, ripped off from the only world you know and thrown into one that is not your own. You are a foreigner and need to learn how to live out there. And most people of Ferelden have never seen a Dalish and rather think they are a myth to scare children. So it doesn't surprise they don't know the difference of a city and Dalish elf ...or quite don't care, because it's just an elf. In which cases Lenya likes points out it's just a human when they treat her like that ---with the pointy part of her blades.

Naturally I can only speak for my Lenya because with her I have the full story planned out/partly written down. She didn't want to leave her clan, even as she was forced to. Never ever. Duncan had to throw her over his shoulder and had to carry her screaming and kicking away from them. Hell she even bit him in the arms to run away

I don't picture my DEF saying two words to Duncan the whole time. She's very sick and pretty traumatized. Duncan is also not the type to try to drag it out of you- he would have been respectful of the distance. He also probably expected you to drop dead any minute.I always wonder what that week or two traveling alone with Duncan would be like. Ordinarily she would have been very wary of Duncan but she trusted Marethari's assurance that he was okay, and from there the natural Dalish need for lore kicked in.

He didnt want to stick around where he would remeber his friends death, and have it shoved in his face. He was sad to leave people behind, but between death and a life in the wide world he took the second.
He was happy to give the Dalish a home, but never felt like going back really. He wanted to see the world beyond, and did just that.

By the end of the game how much had your Dalish changed? Did any of them feel like going back to their clan? Or did they feel like they had changed too much to really fit in anymore? (This is to everyone by the way...)
I've played two Dalish to the end of the game so far (I've made and abandoned many more characters, I'm very picky). One (my avatar) did the US because I really feel out of all the origins that I have played a Dalish warden seems the most likely to take that path given the clan views on things (sacrifice for others and all). And my other Dalish I played as very young when recruited by Duncan. He was very much overwhelmed by everything. The only companions he had were Alistair, Morrigan and Dog. He fell for Morrigan, but she confused the hell out of him and so he let her go and never followed her (unlike most other Wardens that romance Morrigan). In the end he really felt like he couldn't go back to the Dalish and his love had just abandoned him, so he just stuck with the Wardens, not knowing anything else he wanted to do. I also played most of Awakening with him. My Warden who did the US was much more sure of himself and his place in the world than the poor teenager that lived on.

Aithne's clan was very isolationist and probably wouldn't have even let her leave with Duncan if she hadn't been tainted. She herself was conflicted, she was terrified of going out into the world of shem but she didn't want to spread the taint to her clan. She also had always had a desire to learn more, do more (although she had always thought more along the line of joining another clan). Early in the game she was suspicious and aloof around shemlen and even city elves. After Ostagar she understood how important the Grey Wardens were but she still didn't really trust her companions. It wasn't really until Redcliff, when her companions supported her and aided her against overwhelming odds that she really began to see them as people, not just shem. At that point my poor, naive Dalish was susceptable to Alistair's bumbling charms and she gradually fell for him with no consideration of the politics of her involvement with a king's bastard son. By the time they get to the Landsmeet she has learned enough of shem and their politics to not trust Anora and to put unhardened Alistair on the throne. When Alistair then tells her that their relationship is impossible she feels bound by duty and honor to step aside.
Thus my fic starts with AIthne, years after the blight, stuck in a shem city as chancellor of a realm ruled by her former lover. After the blight she never felt like she would fit in with her clan again and she felt duty bound to help the rebuild the realm she had saved (Alistair wasn't up to the job by himself). Of course, life in a city, working with the man she loves after giving him up to another woman is not bringing her happiness..., a point that her friend Zevran confronts her on. Although Aithne is devoted to Andruil, it seem that Fen'Harel takes more of an interest in her life....

I don't picture any of my Dalish Wardens going back to Dalish life. It's a "you can't go home again" story as far as I'm concerned. My rogue rebuilt the Grey Wardens and stayed King Alistair's mistress. My Dalish mage will probably leave Ferelden and possibly leave the Wardens, a GW Alistair with her. I had her spending some time in Rivain with the more settled Dalish there, so it's possible they would live in Rivain (away from Chantry influence and hence no apostate problem). Probably among humans.dream_operator23 wrote...

I'm actually working on a story based on Nathaniel + Orlesian Dalish Warden where she tries to go back to a clan.

I would be interested to see how her clan reacts. I'm in agreement with you, I think a Dalish Warden would find it as hard to go back to his/her clan as it would be for her clan to accept the Warden back.

Speaking of which I would LOVE to have had a Dalish love interest. Male or female, it wouldn't have mattered to me since I romance them both. I think it would have been a really interesting relationship to pursue, especially with a human. Maybe DA2 will have such a romance. I'm not particularly keen on DA2 right now (I hate being bound to play as one race after the freedom of DA:O), but a Dalish romance might help a little...

I didn't think you were really going to make this a semi-sig!
Personally I view a Dalish-Human romance as any other romance. If you're in love you're willing to sacrifice certain things, possibly even your previous lifestyle.
