I think you just get the standard 'hey, we don't hate you because you're elven' dialogue.

Aww that sucks. I was hoping for something along the lines of "Dalish? You're dalish? Hey everyone the Dalish are real!"

I've never had the Alienage elves treat my Dalish any different than they treat my mages. They both get the, "You must not be from around here." dialogue. In fact the city elf is the the only elf that gets treated any differently in the Alienage. I just assumed that no one really even knows what a Dalish looks like since no one in the game says anything about it (except for party members, who of course know what you are). They probably just assume you are a badassed, tattooed Warden elf from some city. ^^

Actually now that I think about it, both Cailan and Logain recognize you as Dalish, but that would make sense seeing as they would be more worldly than your average Ferelden. Does any other non-party member NPC recognize a Dalish Warden for what they are? I can't think of any off the top of my head...

You feel that it's unreasonable to at least respect if not completely buy into (although telling them this might not be a good plan) their culture if they're going to let you join them?

It's not unreasonable.  But it means the choice is not simply one between freedom and subjugation, as some would present it.

it's not really dead if the Dalish still practice it, now is it?

The dalish culture is living, but rather than embrace their present they seek to patch together scattered fragments into a facsimile of something destroyed long ago.  Even they would concede that they have a long way to go, I think

That I think is the case, since Dalish elves -- like said before-- wouldn't freely venture into a city where the 'flat ears' live.

Off the top of my head I can only remember on the Redcliffe tavern (Berwick and Loyd) for that. Addai made a video here

I can't think of any either.  Now I'm curious, and I'm going to go digging in the toolset to see.  :P  Timesink!

And I guess in most human's eyes elves are elves, unlikeable and here to cause trouble, so I guess they wouldn't really give a damn about where the elf comes from

Although the way I RP:ed my mage was that she didn't belong anywhere. Since she was raised in the Tower she lived a bit "better" compared to the elves in the alienage and well, the Dalish just called her a flat ear. If all elves just held hands perhaps they could kick some human ass together. Or at least demand better rights.

Hello, just throwing out my love and support for the elves.

I didn't like the Dalish origin much at first.  I played it once to get the achievment and forgot about it.  When I wanted to play an archer, however, it was the only origin that I felt really fit.  I was really surprised by how much I came to like it.  While I prefer the City Elf origin, I think my Dalish elf turned out to be my deepest character.

She did the Ultimate Sacrifice, though.  Now I'm hearing there will be information about that crazy mirror in the new DLC, and I'm considering replaying my ending to keep her alive.  >_<  The US is definitely the "canon" ending for her, but if there's any Dalish lore given in the new DLC, I want her to be a part of it!

You don't even need to replay the ending to import her. If the last save was post-DR then it will assume that Alistiar/Loghain did it.

But my point is that becoming a dalish elf requires more than the willingness to leave the city and live a tough life in the wilderness.  They won't take you unless you buy into the obsession with a centuries dead culture, take up the worship of gods you've never heard of and get a rather ugly tattoo.  So for most it's probably not much of an option - the only way out seems to be killing archdemons.

That's because their devotion to the old culture is what has allowed them to remain cohesive and survive as a people.  It's not just quaintness, it's literal survival, in a social and spiritual sense first but that contributes to one's will to hold together and endure hardship.  I could name some ethnic minorities in modern times for whom this is also true, but you get the idea.

One thing to keep in mind is that the elves believe you literally lose your life by being "exposed" to humans too much.  They think it's exposure to humans which caused them to lose their long lifespan.  Whether this is true or not, it's not hard to see why they would see city elves as being already apart and lost.  I mean, the alienage is known for its plagues- probably just sanitation, but if you think about the native Americans, they too were weakened by being exposed to pathogens they hadn't encountered before.  Also the city elves "conspire" agains the Dalish at times.  It was city elves and humans together who attacked the PC's parents.

Anyway, so I agree, the problem for city elves and Dalish getting together is more complicated than just physical separation.

I really think that the mirror is a different mirror than the one in the Dalish origin - same type of thing but not the identical mirror. If its the exact same one, then my poor Kara is going to be in a horrible state when she gets there. Even seeing the same sort of mirror will be hard on her. But the mirror was broken in the Dalish origin so it doesn't make sense to go see that one - does to see another though.

That is a good choice actually. Tis why I have started my Dalish dude here...for Morrigan kissy faces xD...and the DLC. Originally he was thought for the Leliana romance but well plans did change half the way :3 I'm looking forward to this DLC since Dalish chars gets a special treatment in there. And hopefully new infos on what the deal with the tainted mirrors is and overall lore.

Lot of people ditch the Dalish origin due to lacking involvement overall, but I found it interesting to fill in the blanks myself. That's how my canon char and my FF was born, after all.

Out of curiosity, did your char romanced someone, leggywillow?

Outside Zathrian's camp, only Redcliffe tavern, as Meri said.

I was really surprised that Brother Genetivi didn't have something, given his fascination with the Dalish. A few of the Dalish codex entries were written by him, like the one you get on vallaslin if you're not Dalish (maybe not an elf...)

He's written codex entries on practicaly everything. I think that when you first meet him he doesn't care what you are as long as you're not a cultist and then he's caught up in Sacred Ash fever.

Oh yes, I know.  It was just that if anyone was going to recognize you as a Dalish, I thought it would be him.  Of course, he had other things on his mind at the time, I just figured he might say something if anyone did.

Fic-wise, in my head most people just see Kara as "elf" but a few connect the dots with her vallaslin and think just maybe they've seen a Dalish elf, maybe.  Or at least a really freakish elf that they should stare rudely at.

I would think with your vallaslin and especially because you're armed, you would really stand out and more people would make the connection. They must have at least heard stories of Dalish elves- all travelers and hunters know to beware of them. I believe they considered having an elf bearing arms in Denerim be an issue but maybe decided it was too complicated.

O.o   When do you learn this?  The older lady by the campfire mentioned my parents' tragic demise, and Varathorn said it was so sad, but nobody has actually followed through with the tale.  ETA: That I could find.  I don't doubt the hahrens here, but I thought it was left ambiguous on purpose.

I was all gung-ho to write my own Tragic Parental Demise, too. <_<

You have to persuade her (woman by the campfire who was like a mother to you) to tell you what happened to them.

Essentialy, PC mom was a hunter from another clan, PC dad was the former  keeper of the clan before Marethari.  Her clan did not approve of the match between them and so they had to meet in secret.  One night while doing so they were ambused by a group of humans and city elves, your father was killed but your mother escaped.  She survived long enough to give birth to the PC, then disappeared into the night.

And if you want to read a weird take on the origin....I have one of those.  :P

Of course the time I decide to try a no-Persuasion run, this happens...  Thanks, Sarah.

@Sandtigress, thanks for the summary.  I was bucking for keeper-dad to have gone abomination, requiring hunter-mom to kill him.  Because surely some Dalish magi attract demons?  And it would have gone well with unclean and cast out Warden.  Le sigh.

Hey, they're the only two who were there.  Maybe the human/city elf story is what momma elf told the Keeper happened!

I think it seems cruel for the mother to stay just long enough to give birth and then wander off never to be seen again. My Dalish, in her more lucid moments, seriously resents this.
