The mother of the DE wanders off into the moonlight and disappears. This has always intrigued me as to why she would do that and lends an air of the mysterious to the character. Was it that her grief was so deep? Or something else.
I need coffee, My mind wanders to some strange places without it.

Well it was just a guess because I've always been a bit baffled to why the bonding between DE's parents wasn't approved of.
I actually suspect they weren't officially bonded - not if bonding is a ceremony done with the clan. They were meeting in secret because of her clan, so I wonder if their union was ever official. Then she was pregnant - the whole thing might have been a bit illicit, which might be one of the reasons why her clan disapproved. I don't think the Dalish are prudes about it, just very bound by tradition (duh) - look at Cammen's outright surprise when you ask if he and Gheyna have ever kissed, or if he's even given her a present. Dalish courtship seems to be much different than your typical Westernish mind-set.

It is a mystery. One of the reasons I love the Dalish origin is that so much is left to the player's imagination. It could very well be that at that time two clans were butting heads so to speak. Nothing is documented so I tend to think perhaps something darker and mysterious may be at the root.
I love it for that reason too. It gave me the opportunity to craft a character I never have played this way before. Before Lenya I was always a happy goody shoes, moralistic, dutiful and nice character in every game i played. Then my Dalish came along out of nothing, slapped me right in the face and screamed "SCREW THE RULES! I HAVE MY OWN!" A really delightful experience I can tell. Since then I love my odd, impulsive Dalish cookie and never looked back.
As for the DE mommy and daddy clan thing, I always thought that the both clans didn't stand on good terms to each other. Sure they are one folk, but I'm sure there were also clans which couldn't stand each other. Probably a rivalry thing about territory, lore findings or whatnot. Like in Romeo and Juliet just without the violence to each other. Maybe Mommy was already promised or gave her promise to another man within her clan and then fell head over heels for the keeper daddy? And her keeper didn't like that? Maybe even one of her clan has tipped the bandits off where the keeper daddy would be? Oh, the possibilities. Okay now my imagination runs wild

I always pictured it that she couldn't live without him in the long term, because ....I dunno for dramatic romantic measures?

Man, I do love taking screenshots
Oh, I cannot forget the Guard Captain:

Although it was not my first run through this origin, for some reason it was a lot more fun than my previous runs.

Nothing quite like doing that I have to admit.
I have done everything else in the game, but leaving Shiani is one thing I cant do.

Exactly the same for me. CE isn't bad, but I just connect more with my Dalish characters.

Narvinyel, my latest elf. She's an arcane warrior, and likely to become a blood mage once she hits 14th level.
I do like the freedom of the mage and Dalish origins, but yet for some reason I still like the city elf origin more. I'm not sure why. Perhaps simply because it was the first one I played, and my favourite character yet was a city elf? Or perhaps there's something else about it that I just haven't put my finger on.

Thanks, the only way to finish that origin is with a beheading of that bastard.
Hmm, does your AW elf have a craving for coffee?
I like the CE origin because I am like playing as the underdog who becomes a zero to a hero in a couple of years. Not too many games I have played offer that role for the main character. Plus, since being someone unfamiliar with medieval fantasy games, I knew little about magic and elves in general.

You can say that again; it is one of the worst things you can do in this game IMO.

Heh, yeah, she probably is constantly wanting... whatever coffee-equivalent Ferelden might have. She's sort of the paranoid 'can't sleep! Get everything done now or they'll kill me while I sleep!' type. She ended up with a permanent sort of odd staring expression which brought that about.
I definitely agree on the beheading Vaughan score. And I think your explanation about the city elf origin is probably part of why I like it. It's somehow much more satisfying to me for the city elf to be saving Ferelden than for the human noble, for instance, who that's almost expected of.

The best ending to that quest is banging Gheyna and then telling Cammen about it. Hopefully the forest ate him.Too true. Do most people complete the Cammen-Gheyna quest or do they just say 'no'?

I agree about Shianni but Rica...she is really nasty about the DN.It may be the red hair but I can never disappoint Shianni or Rica.
Shianni is only a little rude to non-elves and she is also under a lot of pressure and makes sure to apologize once you help her.

@Sarah1281, your origin confused warden definitely applies to my last warden. She was a human noble Cousland. I was rather hurt that Shianni was a bit blunt when we first ran into her. It a while for me to remember that Felicia was human.

My first complete dwarven playthrough was dwarf commoner. Rica really shines in that origin.

I played DC after having already fallen in love with the DN origin and the following exchange:
PC: What if Bhelen did kill his brother?
Rica: You don't understand what nobles are like. They fight for power like rats over bread. (VO: Trying to persuade someone passionately)
Rica: His brothers hated him. They, and Lord Harrowmont, would do anything to bring him down. But he wouldn't stoop to that level. (VO: Defending someone passionately)
Rica: He knows the most important thing to the ancestors is family loyalty. I hope you know that, too.
really seems to imply that if Bhelen did do it, certain favorite characters of mine would have deserved it for the high crime of...being noble. Given the hell she has to deal with for the misfortune of having a casteless mother, you'd think she wouldn't be so judgemental.
And my initial origin-confusion was when I played the DC and kept forgetting that I was, in fact, playing a DC until people in Orzammar kept pointing it out.
Shianni...that girl might not be the most polite person around but anyone who can decide to be on friendly terms with someone who walked away and let her get raped for the money just because they saved Cyrion and the others is really hard to dislike. I mean, Cyrion's all 'You're not welcome here' and Shianni up and forgives you! Just reading those lines in the toolset made me feel guilty for something I didn't even do!

Also random CE thought: the last time I played a CE I remember having some banter with Shianni after I saved the elves from the slavers. I could joke about her cooking, mentioning that her rabbit stew was made with rats. I know that it was supposed to be played for laughs, but I found that exchange rather disturbing. Like it wasn't so much about her bad cooking as how poor and desperate things in the Alienage really are. I bet there are quite a few elves that eat rats because they don't have any money to buy any proper food.

It's right after freeing/sacrificing the elves so even if you do the US you can still get the conversation.Saelihnne wrote...
I never had that exchange about the rabbit stew with Shianni, well yet anyway. My last CE died in a glorious, and icky fight. The CE origin is indeed sad, but I find myself impassioned to decapitate the bastard who goes there. It is a beautiful storyline and yeah Shianni is scary in the good way. =)
