well bioware had history of terrible weapon design , dont get me started NWN bloody two sided axes and maces ?!

All weapons in dragon age are the trendy ,oversized, ugly and flaming things . Ok seriosly im not carrying sword on my back that is constaly on fire , and without sheath .  Also some of popullar weapons like two handed pick axes used by knights are missing completly .
After watching weapons that made britain , i reallized how much nonsense there is modern pop culture dealing with medieval weapons and fighting style ( or lack of one to be correct ) .
So how does one ballanced out fantasy with realism , where real maces are smaller then your fist , but are much more detalied and decorated ?

Well, apart from the Skullcrusher mace and the Voice of the Velvet Dagger, I can't really find weapons in Dragon Age THAT silly... apart from the two hilted two handed sword...

All the other have, more or less, quite simple designed. Not looking at hilts though... those can be overly fantasy-like designed some times :P

It's simple really, you don't. You go with what is going to be possible and simple to implement attractive to the bulk of your audiences, kids these days like their big shiny toys over the boring and crude weapons traditionally made in the middle ages plus they're easy to stick in and animate.

With that said I'd love for games to throw out realistic weapons, and that's one reason why I play Mount & Blade.

The sheer size of the weapons it what it is, daggers are thr size of long swords, short swords are the size of great swords, the two handed sword in the game is bigger then the people wielding it. Things like that.

its a game, weapons should be unrealistic to a degree. but my main concern were that the weapons looked "inflated" like plastic swords, they were just big. for example the daggers were short swords. I hope bioware puts a little more work in the weapon design, but i would be happy if the weapons weren't reskins of reskins.

Well, I am in fact a weapon collector. But among other things, I have a Prussian dagger. saying that Dragon Age weapons look silly, makes this dagger look like... Well, hard to explain. It's quite curvy, and its hilt is made... of... Ivory and something else I really wish not to know :P

Oh there have been some strange and unique designs, I've seen planety in various musems. But like I said, it's the size of the weapons in Origins that are the biggest issue I personally have. I guarntee you that Prussian dagger isn't longer then the length of your foreman which is the case of the Origins dagger, otherwise it wouldn't be classified as a dagger. :P

They're almost cartoony.

I'd love some good looking weapons for DA2 the ones in Origin looked really bad.

Realistic weapons look far better then the crap you see in alot of video games.

Honestly, fantasy over realism, as long as it's reasonable. I like the nice artsy swords, I don't even mind unrealistically big swords, but what kills me, is when people assume that every fantasy world shouold apply the same rules and art style as medieval europe, with those hideous clunky armors and swords. No variety. As long as they look good, I don't mind.

Oh and please make daggers actually look like daggers! The daggers in DAO look like short swords and the hilts of all the weapons were so wide and cartoony they looked like they were taken out of fable.

I just want the weapons named properly. I agree the daggers look like short swords. I liked the daggers from Vagrant Story. They look right and had some historical accuracy. And what is a Sword Staff? I've looked at the weapon Hawke has and to me it's a Mongolian Glaive with a shorter staff length. Don't get me wrong I understand the fantasy part of the game, but for me having realistic weapons that were once used in warfare make the game so much better.

I want a sword that can be drawn from the hip dang it. <_<

Aside from that, I just wanted to say that the flaming sword bit wouldn't be bad if it burst into flame after he drew it. Plus that would make sense. In my head atleast. :o

It didn't bother me. I'm not an expert, so it's not something I go "gah!" at every time I'd see it, though.

I liked the way they did swords in The Witcher. I just want a simple, non glowing, normal sized, 15th century style longsword and 2 hand animations that don't look like I'm trying to swing a tree.

You have people shooting fire and lighting out of their fingers in this game, and your ****ing about weapon realism? If you wanna got that far heavy armor should be removed because walking on foot for more then 10 minutes in heavy armor is next to impossible. Let alone making you able to dive, roll, get up from a fall, or run for more then like 2 steps.

Actually that's all possible in heavy plate armor. Sure you wouldn't want to run sprints or a marathon in it or try to swim across Lake Calenhad but plate armor is designed to be fought in. Now...the Dragon Age version of plate armor is a bit thick for plate...likely a creative liberty to make it seem more impressive.

I kind of wish they would design better weapons also. Sure, it's fantasy and there should be liberties with weapons but designing something that wouldn't be functional on a battlefield can get kind of rediculous. There are some weapons in NWN and DA:O I just don't use because they look like something out of He-Man. When someone describes a story as "gritty, dark, low fantasy" I kind of expect it to adhere to a touch of realism so the atmosphere is grounded. Part of that should be design. Alot of the design in DA:O did a nice job of this for me, but most of the weapons were kind of goofy while some were pretty cool. At least it shows progress from NWN, all the weapons looked like toys in that game.

I think Demon's Souls had the best fighting style/weapons in any game I've played. I love how they handle the claymores in Demon's Souls. I know it would be impossible to carry a Claymore with a shield, but that was fun.
