I'm surprised that no one has mentioned TF2 yet. Lots of free DLC can be done, and done well. I'm planning on getting both Overlord and Kasumi, but I don't have the money at the moment for one new squadmate and one new gun. Now, if we could trade a member of the existing party for free Kasumi, (Thane maybe? He's plot-irrelevant) that would be awesome.

True but:

Overlord is ...."good" and pushing it though, example of why they should charge.

Kasumi as well

BUT

The First appereance pack is a prime example of the opposite side of the coin.

Any weapon DLC, and armor DLC is a prime example of Bioware taking out the inventory system instead of just adding tabs... as to sell weapons otherwise that logically would have been part of an RPG....but some can argue.... is not going on RPG street anymore.

Like Having..... Dragon age 2 with no Inventory, and potions being sold as DLC's..... just no.

A "special" weapon being sold fine... but really? we get 2 snipers in game... 3rd which depends... and 4th one sold?

list goes on.

come to think of it... any armor, and weapons they sell should be free, no argument regarding it...

You have a valid point, particularly with the weapons.

However, DLC is a fairly new feature in videogames (introduced largely just this generation). And as far as I know, few companies take advantage of it to the extent that Bioware does, so I'm personally willing to accept that it will take them some time to get the process down pat. They do seem to be getting better, at least.

I think it should.

No for the same reason ME1 isn't free.
Also we all know it costs money to make this stuff and the devs should receive good money for their hard work.

I don't disagree with you, but you're being simplicstic.

Yes well it is a simple concept. Produce goods to fill the demand.... not much else to say on it. lol

The only question is whether the demand is there FOR THE PRICE...

Difference being that Valve can afford to do that because of all the secondary games revenue they get through the 20+ developers who sell their games through Steam.

It seems their DLC is selling well since they keep putting stuff out.  So is there demand for the prices they ask for? Yes.

weapons are weapons, RPG dont have a handful of weapons, they got many so :P yeah....

Still, they getting better...... duno they are trying to shoot the bulleyes in a target with 4 rings, and they are leaving bullet holes all over the place except the bullseye.

In my opinion are they getting better??? no... are they completly messing up, of course not either. Like I said before... they are just there... floating... neither swimming nor sinking lol. :wizard:

Nothing is truly for free. Even if we don't have to pay to download something the time and effort to create those DLCs comes from the money we give them. I prefer to pay for the individual DLCs I want instead. Also the willingness to pay for a DLC gives the developers a hint of what us consumers wants.

I would assume the weapon/armour DLCs are sold on the basis that if they make a buck, then great. It clearly doesn't require that much effort to make them and hence even if only a few people purchase them, they've made money on it.

Whether or not that is good business or a cynical money-grubbing ploy is in the eye of the beholder - ultimately, this whole enchilada boils down to whether you're willing to pay the price for what you get.

For a 160 pt armour/appearence/weapon DLC, it entirely depends on what it is for me. I thought the Kestrel armour looked cool and was very powerful, I thought Garrus' and Jack's new skins were really cool, so I purchased them. While pound for pound it probably wasn't that great value, this is essentially the question of a couple of quid. I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist over the price I'd pay for a coffee without a second thought.

I'm likely to get this weapon pack, despite the fact that my hacked Adept wields a Revenant and exchanged heavy pistol slot for a shotty. Why? Meh, they look cool. End of.

That being said, I'd prefer if they focused on more 'gameplay' DLCs. Kasumi was a step in the right direction - Overlord was a leap of awesomeness. Lair looks like it could be even better.

More story DLCs, please.

I dont mind paying for DLC's.... I find the name DLC, is appropiate for "extra content clearly not intended for the original game"

Not for "content obviously cut out of original game for all intended purposes related to profits"

Dont mind paying for Overlord... only I have bought anyways. But as I keep thinking.... aegis pack should have been free... and anything after wards

Here's a free DLC suggestion:

M-88 DHB (Dead Horse Beater) — Pummels the corpse so long and hard that the pieces don't even vaguely resemble the creature's original form.

Personally, I find the name appropriate for "downloadable content". :P

It would be cool if it were free but should it? Nope. They're basically episodic expansion packs so Bioware has every right to charge.

Now the weapon and armor DLC on the other hand should be free.

Would I like it to be free? Absolutely, but it won't happen, because M$ doesn't allow free expansions on the LIVE Marketplace.

I do think that BioWare and EA should have played hardball with M$ on stuff like the armor and alternate appearance packs, since it's like 3 hours of work to reskin a character model and wait for it to compile the textures?

Kasumi/Overlord/Shadowbroker packs are fine for 500 points, but not more than that. I don't like stuff like Shadowbroker and the rumored Ash/Kaidan DLC to "sort out those plotthreads" because that should've been in the game itself, period. I'd personally rather see them do a proper expansion like Dragon Age: Origins Awakening than all these mini DLCs.

And some more non-combat DLC would be nice - the intro to Kasumi is over much too quickly, and then it's just another liniar level of shooting stuff. But that's a gameplay issue, not a DLC issue.

By "free" you mean obviously ommitted from the game to make you think they were being generous.

Picture this.

Gears of War 3.

There are No weapons besides the pistol in the game... non, nada , zipo.

And the givey ou the Lancer "free" in a dlc... oh wait the locust hammer head also is "free" in another DLC.... oh but there is more free stuff.

Your character is actually in his pijamas in GOW3, so since we are so generous we will give you armor for ....not free maybe charge you a bit for it.

But it doesn't stop there... we will give you the snipe rifle.... well not free anymore charge you a bit more.....

free....free....free...maybe charge a bit for it...mmm maybe charge a bit more for it.....hmmmmm

Trend maybe?

Like ordering a pizza, and turns out theyr sold you 1 slice... they call you later saying, HEY.... out of the 8 slices you got one??? well we'll give you 3 free but the other 4 u gota pay a bit more.

If it doesn't make sense to you... is coz your sane :P

Ugh, yes, I hated that. It's freakin' ammo. How much training does a person need to use ammo?  And, I mean, if a person of, say, the vanguard persuasion has mastered the fiendishly difficult black art of loading inferno rounds, you can't expect me to buy the idea that, say, disruptor rounds are so utterly different that they're just at a complete loss as to how to load those. And what's more, that they'll never, ever be able to do so.  Seems especially silly when you take into account the fact that you can choose to have other ammo types as a bonus power.

Great UI design; dumb-as-ass, illogical game design.

Yeah, or you know, maybe they just couldn't get it finished before the code freeze.  Or even that some of it may have been created after that freeze.  Also, they were pretty straight about why they were doing the Cerberus Network thing: they make no money from used game sales.   If they were trying to trick us into extolling their generosity, they did a pretty bad job of it, I have to say.  Why, it's almost as if they weren't even trying at all!

Umm, you do know that doesn't really describe ME2 particularly well, right?

I don't think we will be getting anymore FREE Mass Effect 2 Packs from now on...
